Donald Trump’s Words And Tweets Are About To Become Global News. All of Them.

WASHINGTON – What happens when a 70-year-old man whose bluster has rarely carried much consequence wins a job where his every syllable is dissected for meaning?

America and the world are about to find out.

In the past year, Donald Trump has mocked a journalist’s disability, bragged about the size of his genitalia on national television and suggested a political rival’s father assassinated former President John F. Kennedy. Just eight weeks ago, he told his millions of Twitter followers to “check out [the] sex tape” of a Miss Universe winner who said that Trump had bullied her when he owned the pageant.

In less than 60 days, he is set to become president of the United States and commander-in-chief of the world’s most powerful armed forces ― where his every utterance will be scrutinized for its meaning and duly recorded for posterity.

“He feels he could say something one minute and say the opposite the next,” said Douglas Brinkley, a presidential historian at Rice University. “He’s going to do it around the world… There may be countries that call our bluff on that. In a nuclear world, that’s frightening.”

One Republican National Committee member acknowledged that Trump’s unvarnished tweets and off-the-cuff comments pose real risks. “Always potentially explosive and possibly very dangerous,” he said on condition of anonymity.

That potential danger is something the outgoing President Barack Obama has said he has tried to impress upon Trump. “There are going to be certain elements of his temperament that will not serve him well, unless he recognizes them and corrects them,” Obama said in a Nov.14 news conference, four days after a 90-minute meeting with his successor at the White House.

“Because when you’re a candidate and you say something that is inaccurate or controversial it has less impact than it does when you’re president of the United States,” Obama said. “Everybody around the world is paying attention. Markets move.”

Trump’s often inflammatory language during his 17-month campaign, of course, was preceded by decades of controversial remarks ― including several years of false claims that Obama may not have been born in the United States ― and repeated instances in which he reneged on his promises in business deals, leading to hundreds of lawsuits.

His casual relationship with words is also something the RNC and his campaign advisers have been wrestling with for months. A major component of the strategy that let him win the presidency over Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton was to eliminate unscripted moments pretty much entirely. He has not held a news conference since July ― in which he yet again suggested that the father of Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) was somehow involved in the Kennedy assassination ― and only two brief press “gaggles” since then.

Trump’s meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe last week was prefaced with the president-elect’s staff warning a top Abe aide that they should not take his statements during the campaign literally.

And Trump’s extended interview with New York Times reporters and editors this week was reportedly opposed by his incoming chief of staff, Reince Priebus, because he believed the real estate businessman would be unprepared to answer some questions.

As it happened, Trump indeed gave answers that strayed significantly from his previous positions. On climate change, he moved away from his earlier statement that it was all a Chinese hoax to allow that some portion of it was, in fact, related to human activity. On torturing captured terrorists, Trump said retired Gen. James Mattis, a Defense secretary candidate, talked him out of the policy because he advised that it was ineffective.

And while effusively praising the Times as a “jewel,” Trump nevertheless returned to score-settling form by insulting Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.), who said she would not vote for him during her unsuccessful bid for re-election.

Such unscripted talk comes on top of Trump’s return to controlling his Twitter feed, which he had either surrendered entirely or managed to use with discipline in the final days of his campaign. Just hours before his meeting with the Times, he attacked the paper as “failing” and accused it of covering him “inaccurately and with a nasty tone” under the erroneous belief that it had tried to change the ground rules of the interview on him. This was following days of attacks on the cast of the Broadway show “Hamilton,” after an actor spoke out to Vice President-elect Mike Pence about Trump’s commitment to protecting minorities.

Historian Brinkley, for one, does not believe that Trump’s statements at The New York Times’ offices signal anything beyond a desire to win the approval of his audience at that particular moment. “The words of this guy just don’t matter,” he said. “I think we’re going to have to wait and see what his actions are and judge him by his record.”

In any case, anyone in the United States or abroad who believes Trump is going to moderate his tone or message now that he’s won the White House is probably going to be disappointed, said one GOP consultant close to the campaign who insisted on anonymity to speak candidly about the incoming president.

“I think he doesn’t believe the rules apply to him, that he can craft a different kind of presidency,” the consultant said. “He comes by it honestly. He broke every rule and still won the election.”

Screaming From The Golden Cage: Heal Anxiety, Depression And Addiction By Embracing The Truth

Dr. Bruce Alexander, professor emeritus of psychology, performed an experiment in the 1970s. His team built two cages for laboratory rats. In one cage a rat was alone and isolated. It couldn’t see or touch other rats and had nothing to do. In the other cage called Rat Park, they had good food and lots of cheese, running wheels for exercise, colored balls, platforms for climbing, tin cans for hiding and many other rats to play and have sex with.

Rat Park soon filled with babies. In both cases, rats had access to two drinking bottles: a bottle of water and a bottle of water with morphine. Morphine is pure heroin. Unlike street heroin that contains brick dust, bleach powder, cement and other contaminants, morphine is much stronger. At the end of each day, researchers measured the two bottles to see if rats preferred the pure water or the heroin water.

The rats in solitary confinement almost always chose the heroin water. They always became addicted and killed themselves. In Rat Park, they almost never drank heroin water. None become addicted or overdosed. Rats are social, sexual and working beings just like humans.

It ain’t what you don’t know that gets you into trouble.
Is what you know for sure that just ain’t so.
– Mark Twain

People who become addicted don’t have to be put in cages. It’s enough for them only to feel caged-in a job, in a relationship, in a family or in a country. They will drink or take drugs to cope with the situation. Prof. Alexander concluded that addiction is an escape from an environment where human connection is impossible. Alcohol or drug dependence is the consequence of not bearing being present in your own life.

While prof. Alexander was studying the effects of the social environment on rats, the Vietnam war was unfolding on the other side of the world. According to a study published in the Archives of General Psychiatry, 20 percent of the American soldiers fighting in Vietnam were addicted to heroin. The public in the United States was terrified that hundreds of thousands of veterans will become junkies but this never happened.

When they returned home, 95 percent of the addicted soldiers stopped using heroin within one year. Another study published in the Archives of General Psychiatry revealed that addicts who didn’t receive any treatment were as likely to stop using drugs as those who went rehab. They changed the environment, they changed their behaviors.

Johann Hari, in his book Chasing the Scream, wrote that rats in solitary confinement and soldiers in Vietnam didn’t become victims of the drug but of their environment. Addiction was their way of coping with “being dislocated from everything that gave them meaning,” wrote Hari. When you feel caged, and your world becomes intolerable, you leave physically if you can or mentally if you cannot. When soldiers returned home to a meaningful life, they gave up the drugs.

People who live in a social environment where they can connect with others and bond with their work will not become addicted even if they have alcohol and drugs around them because they want to be present in their lives. But if you feel trapped or caged in a situation, a job or a relationship, if you cannot bond because of you in life in a social context that punishes you for expressing who you are and for living your truth, you will find refuge in whatever takes your pain away. Prof. Peter Cohen, director of the Center for Drug Research at the University of Amsterdam, suggested that we need to replace the word addiction with the word bonding. We have a fundamental human need to bond with our work and with others, but we can only bond if we live our truth and open our hearts.

Do You Feel Caged?

You don’t need to live in a cage, or to go to war to feel caged, and not be able to find meaning in life. Your own mind, your unconscious beliefs, a toxic friendship, a job environment or family relationship can choke your will to express who you are with the same tragic effects. The heart’s calling – your will – is only love and cannot be anything else. Your will flows through your heart and pulls you towards what you most value in life.

When you embrace it, you find meaning. When you block it, you find pain. Love is the force that pulls us to follow our dreams and step into the unknown, to reveal and express who we are, to explore, to discover, to create and to bond. Whenever your behaviors conflict your will, whenever you think and act against love, tension grows within yourself. Strain turns into pain. Anger, anxiety, and depression follow.

The Importance of Living Your Truth

I have a friend who is project manager for a financial corporation, but her dream is to open a restaurant. Her will is to start this new business. Every time she thinks about her calling her heart fills with joy. She feels love. But immediately her mind drags her in the opposite direction: ‘What if it doesn’t work?’ ‘I am in my thirties, and I have a child. ‘What will my parents say about me quitting my job after they supported me through college?’

She then acts as she thinks she should and stays in her job without actually willing to do so. Everyone envies her. She earns a great paycheck, has a loving husband and a beautiful child, and she’s sinking into depression. She feels even worse when she looks around her because apparently, she has no reason to feel depressed. The truth is she has the only reason to feel depressed: her heart is screaming from a golden cage, and she doesn’t listen.

Finding Peace of Mind and Joy with Truth

The greater is the gap between what love calls you to do and what you actually do, the deeper the depression you can fall into. The way to find joy is to leave the cage, not to make it prettier. Why do you think the waiting rooms of psychologists and psychiatrists are filled with successful people who realized after twenty or thirty years of work that money, a career and a house in the suburbs do not bring peace of mind and joy of heart?

They keep hoping that by changing the external conditions of their lives – earn more money, be in a better physical shape, have another partner or travel more – will change how they feel. It never works because the emptiness is not around them. The emptiness is within them. And the only way to come back to life is to acknowledge that little voice rising from your heart and begging you to return to love, to return to truth.

How To Get Drunk The Healthy Way This Holiday Season

If I want to get drunk, but in as healthy a way as possible, what are the best beverages and strategies? originally appeared on Quorathe knowledge sharing network where compelling questions are answered by people with unique insights.

Answer by Greg Huang, Co-founder/CEO at drinkwel.com – the multivitamin for people who drink, on Quora:

Because of my company I’ve spent a lot of time learning about being healthier about including alcohol in my lifestyle. Here’s my top ten list for how to get drunk as healthily as possible:

  1. Avoid sugary mixers. Things like margarita mix, juice with high fructose corn syrup, and Red Bull are just as hard for your body to process as the alcohol itself. Not to mention, they’re bad for you. Try mixing your booze with water and fresh fruit juice (no sugar added). You’d be surprised what great drinks you can make without all that extra sugar.
  2. The clearer, the better. Vodka, gin, and light beer are much easier on your body (and lower in calories) than whiskey, bourbon, or red wine.
  3. Don’t mix. It’s hard on your stomach. It’s hard on your head. Mixing alcohol is never a good idea. Pick your drink of choice–and stick to it for the night. You’ll thank yourself the next day.
  4. Take a drinking break. Push yourself to go for an extended period (days, weeks, etc.) with no drinking at all. Your liver will appreciate the rest, and you might even see a decrease in your tolerance so you can drink less (and spend less!), but have just as much fun.
  5. Eat well the next day. If you feel hung over in the morning, try healthy breakfast options like eggs and fresh juice. Despite what you may have heard, greasy food won’t do anything to help you feel better the next day. There’s no such thing as “soaking” up the booze–your body has already processed the alcohol, and the grease will only leave you feeling more bloated. The best thing you can do for yourself is to eat foods that will help replenish the vitamins and minerals you’ve lost and put your body back on a healthy digestive cycle.
  6. Eat before you drink. Having a snack or a meal before your first beverage will help give your body the time it needs to process alcohol and aid in preventing nausea, headache, and an upset stomach. A little bit of starch or dairy goes a long way in coating your stomach lining and preparing your body for alcohol.
  7. Eat while you drink. We all get the drunk-munchies (and are guilty of downing pizza, or Jack in the Box or whatever else sounds delicious when you’re too drunk to think about calories). An excellent way to avoid these grievous choices, and help your body absorb the alcohol correctly, is to keep healthy snacks around while you’re drinking. That way, by the time you’re wasted, you’ll also be full.
  8. Drink water. Before, during, and after. Alcohol is a diuretic and causes dehydration. Have a glass of water in between drinks to keep yourself hydrated and help prevent those nasty dehydration side effects.
  9. Drink less. I know, I know, some people don’t want to hear this, but do yourself a favor, and try to have fewer drinks on those big nights out. Sometimes it’s just about saying no to that last shot of Patrón.
  10. Take your vitamins and minerals. Drinking depletes essential nutrients–make sure you’re feeding them to your system. It won’t do everything, but it will help.

Trump: Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, Acceptance. Now What?

DENIAL

By now most of you have passed the first two to three stages of grief. Well done. It’s been difficult, I know. But you’re likely still in a bit of shock because you just can’t wrap your head around why people who make far less than $ 250,000/year, or who aren’t necessarily bigots, would still vote for someone as reckless and unstable (and historically unqualified) as Trump. Even Trump, himself, I believe, was stunned when he heard the news that he had become president-elect. To Trump, it was no more than a ploy-based popularity contest in which, by all tides seemingly against him, he won. Nevertheless, he is now king. Go ahead and continue counting the popular votes among the quarter-plus of the country who voted for Clinton, but to what avail, when the imperfect Electoral College is still an integral factor (why?), and when ~49 percent of eligible voters didn’t vote at all?

Never mind the work ahead for Trump, which cannot possibly be fully delegated away, as much as Trump seems to want it to be. Even W., despite his record-setting vacation days, and his obsequious deferral to Cheney et al. to govern, still had to make the rounds, and they weren’t exactly a walk in the park (it comes, after all, with the crown). Just wait until Trump comprehends what’s ahead of him. The bloviating nonsense from his Twitter account at 3AM while sagging on his golden toilet will be the easy part. Negotiating trade with China, supplying arms to Israel (and its adversaries), caviling with Russia, and hemming and hawing with the Republican-led House and Senate, will be the least of his ever-growing concerns — or, rather, of Pence’s ever-growing concerns.

ANGER

So how did we get here? Everyone has an opinion. Trump, while a lunatic billionaire (I’ll believe the billionaire status when I see it, which will never be revealed, until or unless Anonymous steps up = please step up, Anonymous), catered to the middle class and inflamed their understandably populist disposition. Of course Trump stands for everything antipodal to populism, but he nevertheless ran on it and prevailed. Clinton sorta ran on it, post-Sanders, but, meh, not really. Clinton, a technocratic career politician who, while impressively credentialed, but who had no salient platform to run on — least of all a catchy slogan to repeat ad nauseam — lost to a well-known conman and reality TV star who had, quite literally, nothing to offer.

BARGAINING

We mustn’t forget that eight years ago Clinton lost to a black junior senator with a Muslim-sounding name. Thus, after four years as Secretary of State — the position’s particulars of which are near impossible to elucidate and translate to the average American — and after another four years as a grandmother, Clinton was nevertheless coronated by the DNC. Which was a bad move, of course. It would have been less bad had Clinton embraced more forcefully Sanders’s rhetoric and had chosen a running-mate like Sanders or Elizabeth Warren, but instead she chose Tim Kaine. I personally believe that’s when many of Sanders’s supporters, including Millennials and the already disillusioned working class, folded. A running-mate is no panacea, and certainly not a promise of change, per se; but a nice, straight, older, white guy, who speaks Spanish relatively fluently (wow), augured to many people that Clinton would politick in much the same way that her husband and Obama had, even if Obama did so in a slightly more progressive, Gen-X-y way. And that, along with the shenanigans of the DNC under Debbie Wasserman Schultz, was Clinton’s undoing. You can blame the right-wing hysteria around Benghazi, the email server, the media, Comey, Russia, misogyny, the decades-long Republican witch hunt for Clinton, but it was Clinton’s implicit guarantee of the status quo that did her in. What was her once-failed campaign thinking? They were thinking about themselves, obviously.

DEPRESSION

Now some of you might be saying to yourselves, the status quo wasn’t so bad. Obama is perhaps the most consequential president in contemporary U.S. history, and one of the most effective presidents ever, which I full-heartedly believe to be true. But while the markets rose, and while the tech and finance and real estate sectors soared, and while corrupt career politicians (like Clinton, whether real or perceived) pow-wowed with the “coastal elites,” everyday Americans felt not only disenfranchised but also disparaged. Quite simply, they had had enough. Imagine that? They would have rather voted for change with nothing at all to substantiate it, than for politics as usual. And that’s precisely what they did (alas, the ones who voted).

Yes, they did so at the expense and safety of all marginalized, demonized, and suffering minorities, but they didn’t care (enough) about them. This doesn’t make all ~55 million of them bigots. You can (and should) debate the cognitive dissonance that accompanied their votes, but until you realize that their votes were about them first, you will only continue to bang your head against the wall in your safe spaces (were they ever?), amidst your microaggressions (which, at most, are just that — micro), and between your 50 shades of privilege (because people in general are just dying to be told how ignorant they are).

ACCEPTANCE

Why do I speak so confidently, so resolutely about this? Because, while by all accounts I personify the so-called coastal elite — as a white male who is highly educated and well-paid by corporations in New York City and in the Bay Area — I come from an “uneducated,” working-class background in Pennsylvania. I’m aware of the struggles that working class whites endure. I’m also aware of their misconceptions. And their foibles. Further, as a member of the LGBTQ community, I also know what it feels like to be treated as less than, as an abomination, as a scourge. I don’t know what it feels like to be a woman, or a Jew, or an immigrant, or a person of color in this country, but I do carry some street cred (if you want to challenge it at this point in time, then you might be part of the current problem). Also, despite the recent rise in Trump-inspired hate crimes and in the shameless (yet ineffectively shamed) rhetoric of various hate groups, the outspoken bigots really only represent a slice of the Trump voting block (how much of the slice remains to be calculated). This is my unsuccessful way of trying to allay our fears.

NOW WHAT?

So what do we do now? This is tricky because Trump and his ilk are bonkers, and because the Republicans are set to run the House and the Senate again. The first time they ran all three, the Great Depression unfurled. The second time, the Iraq War burst out of thin air. And the last two times abetted the recession that Obama battled and eventually beat, no thanks to Congress. To be honest, I’m not entirely optimistic today. I believe at this point in time that one of four things could happen:

• Assuming Trump is not convicted of one of his countless impeachable offenses, the Trump presidency will either be a relative success or a relative non-success. Only if a veritable superhero emerges might disenchanted voters feel compelled to test him or her out in 2020, in which case Trump could be ousted. If we’re at war, however, then the superhero will have a much harder time. Trump, to his chagrin, will either have to run again, or, worse, he will defer to Pence to run as president.
• An inevitable recession will hit in spite of Trump’s policies — good, bad, or horrendous — during which the average American must suffer enough to vote in 2020 for whoever isn’t Trump or Pence. What exactly does “suffer enough” entail? Unprecedented joblessness? Undrinkable water? Online porn that isn’t free?
• Each marginalized minority group might finally learn to desist with the in-fighting and temper the identity politics in order to rally around commonalities and interests shared with other marginalized minority groups; and to then communicate and ally with the white working class in order to bring them back to the Democratic platform, provided the Democratic platform demonstrates a concerted effort to deliver on promises that aren’t tainted by corporations, special-interest groups, lobbyists, and career politicians with unimpressive records. It’s a long shot, I know.
• An even longer shot, but not an entirely dubious one, is the possibility that either one or both of the major parties begin to experience seismic shifts, perhaps culminating in a splintering off into new parties with which to be legitimately reckoned. Could true progressives, disappointed by their acquiescence to the DNC’s 2016 platform, organize themselves quickly enough to rock the boat beyond a Bernie Revolution (taking many independents along with them)? Or could the so-called Alt Right (read: Neo-Nazis), emboldened by the lack of outrage in response to their hateful rhetoric, do the same (taking hypocritical Evangelicals and Tea Partiers along with them)? In a country of ~320 million people, we’re long overdue for multiparty governance that extends beyond Republican and Democrat. How two parties can continue to represent such a large and diverse population with no need to compromise short of shutting down the government (twice) continues to elude me. In other words, maybe real change is yet to come?

Obviously I’m no fortune teller. What are your thoughts? What do you think could happen? What do you think should happen?

Thankfulness may be the last thing on everyone’s minds right now, but keeping up the time-honored Thanksgiving tradition serves some benefits.

Research shows gratitude can reduce stress, improve sleep and more. It also can make you more emotionally resilient, which can help in the face of tough times.

Still not convinced it’ll give you a boost? Enter these legendary writers, who have some of the wisest words on cultivating an attitude of gratitude. The quotes are here to remind you that there’s so much in the world to appreciate ― and you’ll be healthier if you are able to do it.

Check out the sage insight below:

1. “This is a wonderful day. I’ve never seen this one before.” —Maya Angelou

2. “Reflect upon your present blessings, of which every man has plenty; not on your past misfortunes, of which all men have some.” —Charles Dickens

3.

4. “Cultivate the habit of being grateful for every good thing that comes to you, and to give thanks continuously. And because all things have contributed to your advancement, you should include all things in your gratitude.” ―Ralph Waldo Emerson

6. “Gratitude looks to the past and love to the present; fear, avarice, lust and ambition look ahead.” ―C.S. Lewis

7.

(In other words, state your thanks out loud, write it down or tell your loved ones.)

8. “In the end, though, maybe we must all give up trying to pay back the people in this world who sustain our lives. In the end, maybe it’s wiser to surrender before the miraculous scope of human generosity and to just keep saying thank you, forever and sincerely, for as long as we have voices.” ―Elizabeth Gilbert

9. “[For] love casts out fear, and gratitude can conquer pride.” ―Louisa May Alcott

Millennials Are Loading Up On Their Vegetables

It’s no secret that most Americans do a pretty lousy job when it comes to following mom’s advice to eat their vegetables.

In fact, according to estimates from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, less than 10 percent of Americans eat the recommended amount of two to three cups of vegetables per day. That means many of us aren’t getting enough of key nutrients, like potassium and dietary fiber, and vitamins that keep us healthy.

But that statistic appears likely to change in the near future, according to a new analysis released this month by the NPD Group, a market research firm.

According to the firm’s research, consumers under the age of 40 are eating 52 percent more fresh vegetables and 59 percent more frozen vegetables than they were a decade ago. Conversely, the boomer generation — aged 60 and up — is eating 30 percent less fresh vegetables, as well as 4 percent less frozen vegetables, over the same time frame.

David Portalatin, vice president and food consumption industry analyst at NPD, said the data is a sign that younger generations of eaters are “turning back the clock” when it comes to the food they eat.

Millennials, he said, appear to prefer food that is fresh and often local or in season instead of the fast food and packaged convenience foods that began to proliferate at the time their parents’ generation — today’s boomers — were themselves thirty-somethings.

“The younger generation is taking a different look at these things,” Portalatin told The Huffington Post. “What’s old is new again.”

type=type=RelatedArticlesblockTitle=Related… + articlesList=56152560e4b021e856d2ed58,56cf69aae4b03260bf7610fe,56b4b6fbe4b08069c7a6df3e,560acca1e4b0dd85030959b4

The analysis is based off data from the firm’s National Eating Trends food and beverage tracker, which aggregates data from a nationally representative group of panelists who self-report everything they eat and drink using a web-based journal. The latest findings from the tracker were recently published in the firm’s Eating Patterns in America industry report.

And even though the data depends on self-reported consumption patterns, which aren’t always the most reliable, Portalatin believes these numbers are no fluke.

Over the firm’s 30 years of tracking eating patterns, Portalatin explained, vegetable consumption has increased with age, and he sees no reason that will change with the cauliflower-obsessed millennial crowd. The firm is forecasting that fresh vegetable consumption will increase another 10 percent overall over the next several years.

Even if that forecast holds, Americans have a ways to go toward improving their diets.

Portalatin pointed out that we’re still eating far fewer vegetables overall than we were 25 years ago, and these less-healthy eating patterns are often established from a young age. Currently, for example, the vegetable that U.S. toddlers are most likely to eat is a french fry.

But at least it’s a start.

Until Donald Trump Makes The First Move, He’s #NotMyPresident

Since Tuesday, the drumbeat has been pounding steadily demanding that Hillary Clinton supporters “accept” the will of the voters ― well, more accurately the will of the Electoral College. Donald Trump may be the nation’s President-elect, but in terms of Healer-in-Chief, he’s failing miserably.

After what is arguably one of the most heated presidential contests in history, he has uttered not a word to the country about coming together beyond a pro forma mention in his acceptance speech during which he said he would represent the interests of “all.” That’s feeling increasingly doubtful.

Not only hasn’t he stepped up to assure those who he insulted and bullied ―women, immigrants, minorities, Muslims, the LGBTQ community and others ―that he will stop insulting and bullying them, he hasn’t so much as lifted a finger to make any of us feel better, feel welcome, feel less fearful, or feel that he indeed represents our interests.

He hasn’t even called off his dogs, the people who on the day after the election felt empowered to paint Swastikas on storefronts and who held up “Make America White Again” signs. He remains silent as middle school kids chant “build that wall.” Not a peep when the KKK announced that it plans a Trump victory parade. You need more examples? Find them here. And if you want to know the impact, know this: Calls to suicide hotlines have exploded since he was announced the winner.

And through it all, the president-elect hasn’t said a word to us, those who did not support him. On the contrary, his silence, and his absence of a denouncement, fuel our fears. Maybe that’s been his plan all along.

There has not been a single apology, not a single call for his followers to stop committing hate crimes in his name. No, instead the calls have been for people like me to unify behind him. Well, I can’t. I cannot unify behind misogyny, homophobia, white supremacy, Islamophobia or the idea of erecting a wall to keep immigrants out. I can’t. I won’t.

But I do wonder, where is the statesman, the negotiator, the leader of the free world who understands you can’t just rule half a country? I want to know: Where is the olive branch?

Personally, I think he missed a big opportunity to mend ― not erect ― the wall that separates my ability to support him from the demands that I do so. With thousands of protesters marching right under his nose past Trump Tower, why doesn’t he just step outside his ivy tower and talk to us ― the us who didn’t support him? A three-minute stroll into the crowd with an extended hand and the words “I’m Donald Trump and I am proud to be your president. Give me a chance to convince you of that,” and I wouldn’t be writing this.

Instead, I sit here feeling very afraid.

Snapping Scapula Syndrome

What is snapping scapula syndrome?
Snapping scapula syndrome is a condition causing painful grinding, clicking or snapping of the shoulder blade (Figure 1).

2016-11-10-1478791736-9548385-snappingscapula1.PNG

The shoulder joint itself is called the glenohumeral joint. The acromioclavicular joint is associated with shoulder separation. Snapping scapula occurs at the scapulothoracic joint and is different from other shoulder related problems (Figure 2). Over 1/3 of the shoulder movement occurs between the scapula and the thoracic cage.

2016-11-10-1478791901-127435-snappingscapula2.PNG

The shoulder blade serves as an anchor for the subscapularis and serratus anterior muscles (Figure 3). These muscles as well as the bursa provide for smooth movement of the shoulder. With muscle weakness or inactivity, the scapula may rub on the rib bones during movement.

2016-11-10-1478791926-188695-snappingscapula3.PNG

Snapping scapula can be caused by repetitive motions that lead to inflammation of the bursa or atrophy of the muscles under the scapula (Figure 4). When the scapula cannot easily glide along the chest wall, the bones rub together and produce the characteristic noise sensation, painful clicking and grinding. It can be a secondary symptom to shoulder instability, such as dislocation or nerve disorders, which may lead to atrophy and weakened muscles. The patient may develop scarring and fibrosis of the bursa, as well as painful scapular crepitus when moving the shoulder blade.

2016-11-10-1478791949-5273399-snappingscapula4.PNG

Common Causes
Snapping scapular syndrome may be caused be weakness, wasting or atrophy of the scapular stabilizing muscles, bursitis, osteochondroma, and rib or scapular fractures.

Differential Diagnosis
The “snapping” noise may originate from other areas of the shoulder such as biceps tendon subluxation, labral tear. Biceps tendon subluxation is a condition where the biceps tendon subluxes out of its groove in the humeral head and slips forward causing a “snapping” sensation (Figure 5a). A labral tear is a condition causing pain, often deep in the shoulder, that can be associated with a clicking sound during movement of the shoulder (Figure 5b).

2016-11-10-1478791971-6179760-snappingscapula5.PNG

Treatment
Treatment for a snapping scapula includes physiotherapy to improve the stability and coordination of the scapular muscles. An injection of the bursa will also be used. The arm usually is held in a position of extension, internal rotation and adduction with the patient lying prone. The needle should be placed under the scapula and avoid puncturing the pleura (Figure 6). A chest x-ray may be needed after the injection.

2016-11-10-1478791993-6541935-snappingscapula6.PNG

A needle inserted into the scapulothoracic joint under fluoroscopy with the aid of scapular “Y” view x-ray. The contour of the scapular projects as the letter Y on the x-ray (Figure 7).

2016-11-10-1478792012-8090846-snappingscapula7.PNG

Surgery is rare, and is done for debridement of the bursa or for removal of the bony lump. The debridement is done either open or arthroscopically.

Quirky New Hampshire Precincts Bring In The Election’s First Votes

According to tradition, residents of three New Hampshire locales have been granted the privilege of casting the very first votes in the 2016 elections. At midnight on Tuesday, polling places opened in the unincorporated town of Dixville Notch in Coos County, as well as the town of Hart’s Location in Carroll County. Joining these two towns in this longstanding tradition of midnight voting this year is Millsfield, also in Coos County.

Votes were tallied soon afterward, and now we have our first official election returns of this year’s presidential race.

This year, Dixville Notch residents cast four votes for Hillary Clinton, giving the Democratic candidate the win over Donald Trump, who earned two votes. Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson notched one vote, while Green Party candidate Jill Stein did not receive any. In a twist ending, one of the votes cast in Dixville Notch went to Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor and 2012 GOP presidential candidate.

Meanwhile, voters in Hart’s Location picked Clinton over Trump by a score of 17 to 14. Gary Johnson picked up 3 votes. Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders (I) received 2 votes, while a combined John Kasich-Sanders ticket won a single vote.

Finally, the early votes in Millsfield favored Trump, who prevailed over Clinton by a tally of 16 to four. Sanders took one vote.

In 2012, the Dixville Notch vote ended in a draw, with both President Barack Obama and Romney earning five votes apiece. Obama won a more decisive victory in Hart’s Location. The final tally saw the president defeating Romney by a score of 23 to 9. Gary Johnson took home one vote.

The Scoop On Finding A Healthy Plant-Based Protein Powder

Protein powders come in many different types. Most people are familiar with the milk-derived whey and casein proteins, but the lesser-known plant-based options are starting to get more attention because people cannot help but talk about how good they feel from it. Plant based proteins can be made up of soy protein, hemp protein, pea protein, and rice protein. High quality plant based protein powder can help you build muscle, burn fat, and even support digestive health. The DRI (Dietary Reference Intake) states 56 grams of protein per day is ideal for the average sedentary man and 46 grams per day for the average sedentary woman. We can ensure we hit this daily quota from just one plant based protein powder which can provide us 20-28 grams per serving.

There are several types of plant-based proteins on the market. When considering a new protein powder for your diet, here are some important elements to consider:
• What ingredients make it high in protein?
• The protein per serving
• Are there artificial fillers, ‘natural flavors’ or additives?
• How was the crop raised?
• The price
• Calories and sugar content

We are what we eat, so it’s very important to only put high quality and nourishing food into our body. Who we are next year is a result of what we have consumed this year.

Protein is an important element for building our body. Everybody needs protein. Most people think we get protein by eating meat, when there are actually some plants and seeds that offer more protein for the body and are more easily digestible. I only buy plant based protein powders because I know it is easily assimilated in my body via the digestive system. So whenever I can take advantage of getting protein from a plant or seed, I do it.

There are many protein powders on the market right now, so I’ve taken 2 of the most popular brands, plus one new plant based protein to compare.
1. NUTIVA Plant Protein SUPERFOOD 30 SHAKE
2. VEGA One Nutritional Shake
3. SHAKEOLOGY

The Ingredients, and Are They Organic?
Whenever we put something into our body we ought to be concerned with what it is, the quality of it, and if the ingredients are organic. If they are not organic, the food is often grown conventionally with synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. The food can absorb these chemicals and in turn, our body absorbs the chemicals when we eat the food. Our body can have a challenging time detoxing these chemicals, and so they end up storing in our fat cells causing weight gain, inflammation and a weakened immune system. Industrial dairy-based whey proteins are produced from cows injected with antibiotics and fed GMO corn and soy that is sprayed with Monsanto’s RoundUp herbicide, which the World Health Organization stated is linked to cancer.

I was absolutely shocked to find out the Vega is not organic. Most people assume Vega is organic, like I did, because it is such a popular product.

NUTIVA (ORGANIC) ;

Ingredients: protein blend (pea,* chia,* hemp,* sacha inchi,* brown rice,)*, inulin (from chicory),* coconut milk powder,* fruit & vegetable blend (hawthorne berry,* baobab,* moringa,* sea buckthorn,* purple corn,* reishi mushroom,* kale,* kelp,* suma root,* spinach, broccoli, carrot, beet, tomato, apple, cranberry, cherry, orange, blueberry, strawberry, shitake mushroom), vanilla flavor,* dl alpha tocopherol, sea salt, cinnamon,* digestive enzyme blend, probiotics (bacillus coagulans [provides 1 billion cfu/serving])

*certified organic
made without dairy, soy or sythetic “natural” flavors.

VEGA (NON-ORGANIC):

Pea protein, whole flaxseed (micro-milled), organic acacia gum (naturally occuring fiber), hemp protein, SaviSeedTM (sacha inchi) protein, organic gelatinized maca root, organic broccoli, inulin (from chicory root), organic spirulina, organic kale, organic marine algae calcium, fruit & vegetable blend (spinach, broccoli, carrot, beet, tomato, apple, cranberry, orange, blueberry and/or bilberry, strawberry, shiitake mushroom), chlorella vulgaris (cracked whole cell), papaya extract, probiotics (bacillus coagulans [provides 1 billion cfu/serving]), antioxidant fruit blend (grape seed extract, organic pomegranate, açai, mangosteen, organic goji, organic maqui), Contains 2 percent or less of: natural vanilla flavor, natural caramel flavor, stevia extract, citric acid.

SHAKEOLOGY (NON-ORGANIC)::

Protein Blend (Whey protein isolate (milk), Pea protein, flax (seed), Chia (seed), Quinoa (seed)), Pea fiber (seed), Pomegranate (fruit), Yacon (root), Acerola cherry (fruit), Cordyceps (fungi), Chicory fiber (root), Blueberry (fruit), Bilberry (fruit), Astragalus (root), Camu-Camu (fruit), Lycium berry (fruit), Spinach (leaf), Maitake (fungi), Reishi (fungi), Rose hips (fruit), MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane), Ashwagandha (root), Enzyme Blend (Amylase, Cellulase, Lactase, Glucoamylase, Alpha-Galactosidase, Invertase), Kale (leaf), Lactobacillus sporogenes (as Bacillus coagulans), Schisandra (fruit), Maca (root), Luo Han Guo (fruit), Cinnamon (bark), Green tea extract (leaf), Moringa (leaf), Chlorella (whole plant), Sacha inchi (seed), Spirulina.

Other ingredients: Non-GMO fructose, Natural vanilla flavor (with other natural flavors), Xanthan gum, Himalayan salt, Stevia extract (leaf).

Organic differentiates the quality of the product. Why does it matter? Organic is incredibly important, especially when we take a look at the environment right now and all the excess chemicals and toxins we breathe in on a daily basis. Plus when you buy non organic you are supporting this kind of unhealthy system that is not good for the future of our planet. You are giving your body a break when you buy organic, plus helping out the environment.

It’s as simple as if we eat non-organic we consume more toxins. Toxins cause weight gain and a list of health problems.

Nutiva is certified organic.
Vega is NOT certified organic.
Shakeology is NOT certified organic.

*Nutiva’s organic farmers build healthy soil without Glyphosate-based herbicide or synthetic fertilizers.

Is it Genetically Modified?
NUTIVA is certified NON-GMO
VEGA is certified NON-GMO
SHAKEOLOGY is NOT certified NON-GMO

High Protein Count
NUTIVA 20 grams of protein in a 34-gram scoop
VEGA 20 grams in a 46-gram scoop
SHAKEOLOGY 15 grams in a 42-gram scoop
**Nutiva has 25% more protein per ounce than Vega.

The Price
NUTIVA: $ 49.95 serves 18
VEGA: $ 69.95 serves 20
SHAKEOLOGY: $ 129.95 serves 30

Nutiva has the best value for money. Shakeology is the most expensive which is bizarre since their product is the cheapest to make (ingredients) and is not certified organic OR NON-GMO.

Sugar Content and what is it Sweetened With?
Our body’s thrive off sugars, but the right kind of sugar. Whole natural sweets that come from nature are easiest for the body to digest, like fruits and vegetables. White sugar and refined sugars like corn syrup are dangerous for the body.

NUTIVA is sweetened with monk fruit and has 2 grams of sugar per serving.
VEGA is sweetened with stevia and has 1 gram of sugar per serving.
SHAKEOLOGY is sweetened with stevia and has 8 grams of sugar per serving.

*If you do not like the taste of stevia which can give some people a sickly aftertaste that lingers in the mouth for a long time, opt for Nutiva as it does not use stevia.

Calories
Nutiva 120 calories per serving
Vega 170 calories per serving
Shakeology 170 calories per serving

Avoid Brown Rice and Oats as a Filler
We want to limit our rice intake as rice can accumulate heavy metals. And if you are eating oats make sure they are organic as the standard way to harvest oats is to spray RoundUp TM. Right when the kernel is ripe and it kills the plant. We shouldn’t be eating RoundUp TM it is a toxin. It should almost be illegal. Also be on the look out if a product lists ‘natural caramel flavor’ or ‘natural vanilla flavor’ as these often are synthetic and are not found in nature. Brown rice is a common protein used in most plant- based protein powders. It’s worth noting that the main source for brown rice protein is China. Also consider the fact that rice tends to uptake soil- based heavy metals which then ends up in the organic rice protein end product.

The Taste
You want to make sure that even in water it tastes great. You don’t need to deal with the bad flavor in drinking a protein smoothie. I taste tested all 3 of these brands and my favorite was Nutiva, it was smooth and enjoyable. Vega was grainy, and Shakeology was absolutely terrible and tasted extremely refined. I didn’t enjoy the stevia aftertaste of Vega or Shakeology.

Can it be made with Water?
You want to make sure you can make your protein powder in water, just in case you are on-the-go and get stuck one day and are carrying a one serving satchel in your bag and water is your only option. I tried all three of these in water and the one that mixed best was Nutiva, it was smooth. Vega and Shakeology was grainy. If you do have the luxury of blending it with almond milk or hemp milk you are in for a delicious smooth shake treat!

Other factors to include are is it a natural probiotic, certified gluten free, kosher and soy free? The only one of these 3 that tick this entire list is Nutiva. Nutiva have clearly done their thorough homework on a high quality, affordable shake delivering proper superfood nutrition to the body.

Also side note: Nutiva has been nominated for “Favorite Protein Powder” in the 2016 Veggie Awards by VegNews Magazine, the world’s largest survey of vegan products, people, and places with over 60,000 people casting their vote.

In Conclusion
After completing this study, and factoring in the above, of all the plant based proteins I have tried, I would personally choose Nutiva’s Plant Protein Superfood 30 Shake in either vanilla or chocolate as my top choice. For me it is obvious since Nutiva is actually certified organic, is at a great affordable price, low in sugars (and not stevia) and has a great taste.

Serving suggestion: Add 2 tablespoons of Hempseeds to your shake for an extra 8g of Protein and 1.7g Omega-3.Consider the addition of 1 tablespoon of Nutiva Coconut Manna (ie coconut butter) and water to eliminate the need for buying cartons of almond or coconut milk.

9 Habits Of Highly Emotionally Intelligent People

2016-10-27-1477587190-3250495-9HabitsofHighlyEmotionallyIntelligentPeopleHP

When emotional intelligence first appeared to the masses, it served as the missing link in a peculiar finding: people with average IQs outperform those with the highest IQs 70% of the time. This anomaly threw a massive wrench into what many people had always assumed was the sole source of success–IQ. Decades of research now point to emotional intelligence as the critical factor that sets star performers apart from the rest of the pack.

How much of an impact does emotional intelligence (EQ) have on your professional success? The short answer is: a lot! It’s a powerful way to focus your energy in one direction with a tremendous result. Of all the people we’ve studied at work, we’ve found that 90% of top performers are high in emotional intelligence. You can be a top performer without emotional intelligence, but the chances are slim.

Emotional intelligence is the “something” in each of us that is a bit intangible. It affects how we manage behavior, navigate social complexities, and make personal decisions that achieve positive results. Emotional intelligence is made up of four core skills that pair up under two primary competencies: personal competence and social competence.

2016-10-27-1477591238-9212416-9HabitsofHighlyEmotionallyIntelligentPeopleHP2

Personal competence
comprises your self-awareness and self-management skills, which focus more on you individually than on your interactions with other people. Personal competence is your ability to stay aware of your emotions and manage your behavior and tendencies.

  • Self-Awareness is your ability to accurately perceive your emotions and stay aware of them as they happen.
  • Self-Management is your ability to use awareness of your emotions to stay flexible and positively direct your behavior.

Social competence is made up of your social awareness and relationship management skills; social competence is your ability to understand other people’s moods, behavior, and motives in order to respond effectively and improve the quality of your relationships.

  • Social Awareness is your ability to accurately pick up on emotions in other people and understand what is really going on.
  • Relationship Management is your ability to use awareness of your emotions and the others’ emotions to manage interactions successfully.

Despite the significance of emotional intelligence, its intangible nature makes it very difficult to know which behaviors you should emulate. So I’ve analyzed the data from the million-plus people TalentSmart has tested in order to identify the habits that set high-EQ people apart.

1. They’re relentlessly positive.
Keep your eyes on the news for any length of time, and you’ll see that it’s just one endless cycle of war, violent attacks, fragile economies, failing companies, and environmental disasters. It’s easy to think the world is headed downhill fast. And who knows? Maybe it is. But emotionally intelligent people don’t worry about that because they don’t get caught up in things they can’t control. They focus their energy on directing the two things that are completely within their power–their attention and their effort. Numerous studies have shown that optimists are physically and psychologically healthier than pessimists. They also perform better at work. Remind yourself of this the next time a negative train of thought takes hold of you.

2. They have a robust emotional vocabulary.
All people experience emotions, but it is a select few who can accurately identify them as they occur. Our research shows that only 36% of people can do this, which is problematic because unlabeled emotions often go misunderstood, which leads to irrational choices and counterproductive actions. People with high EQs master their emotions because they understand them, and they use an extensive vocabulary of feelings to do so. While many people might describe themselves as simply feeling “bad,” emotionally intelligent people can pinpoint whether they feel “irritable,” “frustrated,” “downtrodden,” or “anxious.” The more specific your word choice, the better insight you have into exactly how you are feeling, what caused it, and what you should do about it.

3. They’re assertive. People with high EQs balance good manners, empathy, and kindness with the ability to assert themselves and establish boundaries. This tactful combination is ideal for handling conflict. When most people are crossed, they default to passive or aggressive behavior. Emotionally intelligent people remain balanced and assertive by steering themselves away from unfiltered emotional reactions. This enables them to neutralize difficult and toxic people without creating enemies.

4. They’re curious about other people. It doesn’t matter if they’re introverted or extroverted, emotionally intelligent people are curious about everyone around them. This curiosity is the product of empathy, one of the most significant gateways to a high EQ. The more you care about other people and what they’re going through, the more curiosity you’re going to have about them.

5. They forgive, but they don’t forget. Emotionally intelligent people live by the motto “Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me.” They forgive in order to prevent a grudge, but they never forget. The negative emotions that come with holding onto a grudge are actually a stress response. Holding on to that stress can have devastating health consequences, and emotionally intelligent people know to avoid this at all costs. However, offering forgiveness doesn’t mean they’ll give a wrongdoer another chance. Emotionally intelligent people will not be bogged down by mistreatment from others, so they quickly let things go and are assertive in protecting themselves from future harm.

6. They won’t let anyone limit their joy.
When your sense of pleasure and satisfaction are derived from comparing yourself to others, you are no longer the master of your own happiness. When emotionally intelligent people feel good about something that they’ve done, they won’t let anyone’s opinions or accomplishments take that away from them. While it’s impossible to turn off your reactions to what others think of you, you don’t have to compare yourself to others, and you can always take people’s opinions with a grain of salt. That way, no matter what other people are thinking or doing, your self-worth comes from within. Regardless of what people think of you at any particular moment, one thing is certain–you’re never as good or bad as they say you are.

7. They make things fun. Emotionally intelligent people know exactly what makes them happy, and they constantly work to bring this happiness into everything they do. They turn monotonous work into games, go the extra mile to make people they care about happy, and take breaks to enjoy the things they love no matter how busy they are. They know that injecting this fun into their lives fights off stress and builds lasting resilience.

8. They are difficult to offend. If you have a firm grasp of whom you are, it’s difficult for someone to say or do something that gets your goat. Emotionally intelligent people are self-confident and open-minded, which creates a pretty thick skin.

9. They quash negative self-talk.
A big step in developing emotional intelligence involves stopping negative self-talk in its tracks. The more you ruminate on negative thoughts, the more power you give them. Most of our negative thoughts are just that–thoughts, not facts. You can stop the negative and pessimistic things your inner voice says by writing them down. Once you’ve taken a moment to slow down the negative momentum of your thoughts, you will be more rational and clear-headed in evaluating their veracity. You can bet that your statements aren’t true any time you use words such as “never,” “worst,” and “ever.” If your statements still look like facts once they’re on paper, take them to a friend and see if he or she agrees with you. Then the truth will surely come out.

Bringing It All Together

Unlike your IQ, your EQ is highly malleable. As you train your brain by repeatedly practicing new emotionally intelligent behaviors, your brain builds the pathways needed to make them into habits. Before long, you will begin responding to your surroundings with emotional intelligence without even having to think about it. And as your brain reinforces the use of new behaviors, the connections supporting old, destructive behaviors will die off.

Which strategies are your favorites? Please share in the comments section below, as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.

It Sure Looks Like FBI Renegades Are Trying To Swing The Presidential Election

Three days before a historic election, a disturbing twist has emerged: the possibility that agents in the country’s preeminent investigative service are attempting to swing the outcome.

Reuters reported on Thursday that FBI Director James Comey wrote his unprecedented letter to Congress last week in part because he feared his own employees might leak word of the Hillary Clinton email investigation to the press. Two sources told Reuters that investigators in the FBI’s New York field office are “known to be hostile” to Clinton. On Thursday, The Guardian reported its sources described the FBI as a “Trumpland,” where agents have “deep antipathy” toward Clinton.

Those reports follow a whirlwind week of leaks from the FBI that appear intended to cast a shadow over Clinton.

    • On Sunday, The Wall Street Journal reported that FBI investigators had looked into the Clinton Foundation and were frustrated that senior law enforcement officials and career anti-corruption prosecutors were not impressed by the results. So frustrated, it seems, that details of their investigation ended up in a news report less than 10 days before Election Day.

    • The leaks continued days later. A story in the Journal on Wednesday revealed more information about the investigation.

    • Fox News reported on Wednesday that FBI sources said that the Clinton Foundation case is moving toward “likely an indictment.” The story was widely refuted by other media organizations. (Fox anchor Bret Baier apologized for the report on Friday, calling it a “mistake.”)

    • On Friday, Donald Trump surrogate Rudy Giuliani, who claims deep connections to the FBI, admitted that the Trump campaign knew about the FBI’s review of additional emails before Comey’s letter. “I thought it was going to be about three or four weeks ago,” he said of the FBI director’s announcement. Hours later, Giuliani backpedaled and said he knew nothing of FBI leaks.

The leaks would be alarming under any circumstances. The Department of Justice typically does not comment on ongoing probes. “Except in exceptional circumstances, the department will not even acknowledge the existence of an investigation,” former Attorney General Eric Holder wrote on Sunday. For such leaks to occur so close to an election is a further breach of DOJ guidance, which advises officials with questions “regarding the timing of charges or overt investigative steps near the time of a primary or general election” to contact the Public Integrity Section of the Criminal Division.

While judging the seriousness of an investigation by anonymous leaks may be a fool’s errand, the case against the Clinton Foundation does not appear to be strong. According to The New York Times, a key source for the investigation was the book Clinton Cashwhich was funded by a group co-founded by Steve Bannon, the former Breitbart executive chairman who is now Trump’s campaign CEO.

Public integrity prosecutors were reportedly not persuaded by the FBI’s findings. “There’s no there there. It’s a nothing burger with a side of hot air. There is no case to prosecute,” said Tim Weiner, author of Enemies, the definitive history of the FBI. Investigators’ “efforts to find criminality in the conduct of Hillary Clinton have come up thus far with nothing and agents don’t like it went investigations don’t pay off,” he said.

While Comey’s decision to write to Congress less than two weeks before the election was misguided and unnerving, it’s the possibility of a revenge-seeking shadow element within the agency that is much more troubling. That these investigators may have forced Comey’s hand suggests that they constitute a threat that will outlast the election. Even if Clinton wins, she will oversee an FBI employing at least a small number of agents who appear to have meddled in an election. The rot will persist.

The FBI’s history is littered with unsavory acts ― from blackmailing Martin Luther King Jr. to eavesdropping on at least 12 Supreme Court justices. The decision by some of its agents to intervene in the most high-stakes election in generations joins that odious list. In a campaign that has seen the steady erosion of longstanding political norms, this is one of the most unsettling developments yet.

    Ryan Grim contributed reporting.

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.

The Biggest Difference Between Faith And Religion, According To This Religious Scholar

Forty-four-year-old Reza Aslan has devoted his life to studying the religions of the world, but didn’t need long to come to an eye-opening realization: All of these religions are essentially saying the same thing, albeit using different languages, metaphors and symbols to do it. However, if this is true, then why are so many religions and religious people adamant that there’s only one true path the faithful should follow? Aslan answers this question on OWN’s “SuperSoul Sunday.”

“They confuse the path for the destination,” he says. “They think that religion and faith are the same thing.”

As Aslan explains, there’s a crucial difference between religion and faith that people overlook all too often.

Religion is merely the language that you can use to express what is fundamentally inexpressible.

“Faith is personal and mysterious and individualistic and inexpressible and indefinable. Religion is merely the language that you can use to express what is fundamentally inexpressible, to define what is undefinable,” he says.

So, Aslan continues, subscribing to a particular religion need not be such a focal point.

“In a sense, for me, the language that you choose is not that important,” Aslan says. “It’s what you are expressing that actually matters.”

“SuperSoul Sunday” airs Sundays at 11 a.m. ET on OWN, and you can watch full episodes on demand via the Watch OWN app.

    Another thought about religion:

Aslan describes religion in one word (no, not “love)

This Is The First Drug-Resistant Fungus Found In The U.S.

A drug-resistant fungus that first emerged in the U.S. only a few years ago has been linked to four deaths, and health officials are on guard about its potential to spread in healthcare facilities throughout the country.

    C. auris, a yeast that has sickened people around the globe and caused potentially deadly infections, appears to have arrived in the U.S. a few years ago, according to the first report on C. auris released by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Because C. auris cases have cropped up in other countries, the CDC decided to alert all U.S. clinics, labs and public health authorities about the potential danger in June. The alert also called on these facilities to start collecting information about any potential cases of C. auris, which resulted in the CDC’s first study on the fungus.

Thanks to the request for reporting, the CDC found that since 2013, there have been only 13 cases of the fungal infection in the U.S. Between 2013 and August 2016, there were seven cases of the fungal infection reported in the U.S., and these seven are the focus of the first CDC study on C. auris. Since August, six more were reported and are currently being investigated.

While these U.S. cases have been confined to hospital-linked infections and aren’t circulating in the community, public health experts are worried that it could grow into a major threat. There are only three classes of medications that can cure fungal infections, and there have been cases of C. auris in other countries that have resisted all three treatments

We feel we need to take it very seriously, be aggressive and get out in front and try to see what we can do to prevent its spread.
    Dr. Tom Chiller

“When you’re dealing with a multidrug resistant pathogen that we know is causing a lot of disease in countries where it is more widespread, then we worry about it causing similar problems in the United States,” said Dr. Tom Chiller, chief of CDC’s Mycotic Diseases Branch. “We feel we need to take it very seriously, be aggressive and get out in front and try to see what we can do to prevent its spread.”

Here’s what you should know about the new fungus.

    1. All the U.S. cases are linked to a healthcare setting

The seven cases of C. auris occurred in healthcare facilities in New York, Illinois, Maryland and New Jersey and struck hospitalized patients with serious underlying medical conditions. Four people died, but it’s unclear whether they died of their pre-existing medical condition or the new C. auris infection.

Five of the cases were resistant to at least one antifungal medication, but unlike strains from other parts of the globe, they were not resistant to all three classes of antifungal drugs doctors have at their disposal.

While the fungal strains are genetically related to strains isolated in South Asia and South America, none of the people who had C. auris infections had ties or had traveled to those regions, the CDC notes, which means they were probably infected locally.

    2. C. auris is relatively new, and mostly affects severely sick people.

    C. auris was first isolated in 2009 in Japan and was so-named because it came from the discharge in a patient’s ear canal (auris means ear in Latin). It has since popped up in South Korea, India, Pakistan, South Africa, Kenya, Kuwait, Israel, Venezuela, Colombia, the United Kingdom and Canada. It can cause serious bloodstream, wound and ear infections, and has struck patients of all ages. Based on the limited information they’ve gathered on these cases so far, researchers have observed that 60 percent of people with C. auris infections have died, but it’s unclear what, exactly, caused them to die, as people who get this infection are already severely ill.

Risk factors for C. auris infection include surgery, diabetes, the use of antibiotic and antifungal treatments, and use of a central line catheter in the arm or chest.

    3. How to protect yourself from drug-resistant microbes

If you’re a patient in the hospital, one way to protect yourself from drug-resistant microbes is by asking everyone who enters your room to wash their hands. If you have a catheter in place, you should also ask your healthcare provider every day if that catheter is necessary, advises the CDC.

Scientists are generally most concerned about antibiotic-resistant bacteria, which is the biggest group of drug-resistant microbes. About two million people will get infected with an antibiotic-resistant bacterium every year in the U.S., while an estimated 23,000 people will die of their infection.

There is no national mandatory reporting for antifungal-resistant infections, so the CDC doesn’t have comparable figures, Chiller explained. But in a report outlining the most concerning drug-resistant pathogens, other species of Candida yeasts resistant to the anti-fungal medication fluconazole are characterized as a “serious” threat because it’s the fourth-most common cause of healthcare-linked bloodstream infections in the U.S.

Georgia’s Young Voters Agree: Donald Trump’s Refusal To Concede Is Alarming

ATLANTA ― In what might be the newest swing state this election, voters in the least traditionally partisan age group said the final televised presidential debate may have changed exactly zero minds.

At Wednesday’s joint debate watch party for the Atlanta Young Republicans and the Young Democrats of Atlanta, GOP millennials cheered Donald Trump’s jabs at Hillary Clinton, and the Democratic 20-somethings applauded her takedowns of Trump.

“Honestly, I don’t know. Who’s undecided at this point?” said Angelyn Dionysatos, president of the Republican group.

One issue, though, did make both sides uncomfortable: Trump’s refusal to say he would accept the result of next month’s election should he lose. Democrats reacted with outrage. Republicans grimaced and stayed silent.

Jake Evans, a 29-year-old lawyer still in his suit and tie from work, said Trump probably would have been better off saying, yes, of course, he would concede if he lost. On the other hand, Evans said, the answer probably would not turn off his supporters. “Trump is a fighter,” he said. “At this point, Americans know who Donald Trump is.”

Earlier, Evans had expressed his frustration when Trump interrupted Clinton with: “Such a nasty woman.”

“Come on,” Evans said. “See? This is how he falls apart.”

Recent polls show that in Georgia ― which 2012 GOP nominee Mitt Romney comfortably won by 8 points ― both candidates could be statistically tied.

One reason for this is Trump’s failure to appeal to younger, college-educated Republican women. One woman in the GOP group pantomimed shooting herself when describing her efforts to persuade her friends to vote for Trump.

She said she couldn’t justify the Republican nominee’s attitude toward women, exemplified by a recently unearthed “Access Hollywood” video that recorded him bragging that his celebrity allowed him to sexually assault women. “I’m the worst possible advocate for him,” she said on condition of anonymity, so as not to hurt her standing with the party.

Baylie Fry, a 26-year-old lawyer who reluctantly supports Trump despite his comments about women, said the final debate performance was probably his best. “I think he did a good job because he stayed composed, which is hard for him,” Fry said. “He wasn’t as bad as [in] his first two debates.”

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.

    America The Good

America is great because she is good. If America ceases to be good, America will cease to be great. – Alexis de Tocqueville

I want to believe we are the good guys. I want to know, deep in my heart, that we reject the vile, the stupid, the disgusting. I want us to behave as a nation should behave – caring for those least amongst us like the poor, the disenfranchised, the vulnerable, with the same unceasing generosity we displayed at the end of World War 2 and the implementation of the Marshall Plan . We knew that the rest of the world would scoff at our naïveté and think us foolish to expect appreciation, but we did it anyway. Because we thought it was the right thing to do. 2016-10-19-1476909908-8074167-535.jpg

We are facing a true crisis in America. An existential crisis about our way of life, our national character, and the very existence of democracy. This entire election cycle, from its inception, has been completely toxic. Candidates have shown little respect for each other. They threaten each other, insult spouses, children, and take horrific swipes at each other. They have shown little respect for the citizens of this country and for our institutions, our civility, and our place in the world.

The U.S. has always seemed brash. I remember when I was working with the York Archaeological Trust one summer. I went to the bank with our weekly stipend to change some dollars into pounds. We were essentially paid volunteers and not paid a lot. A friend from the trust, ironically from York, Pennsylvania, was also in this bank, and as we were standing in line, we heard the harsh, strident tones of an American accent, arguing that the previous day’s exchange rate had been better and demanding the bank honor it. Since there was a bit of a line, we kept hearing the angry American and her equally loud and obnoxious husband arguing with this poor bank teller about the rates. The more they spoke, the more British we became, so that by the time we were at the window with our familiar weekly teller waiting to exchange our dollars to pounds, we were speaking in upper crust drawls. With a glance at the bleating, loud, ugly Americans behind us, the teller winked and didn’t betray us, and we slinked out of the bank without having to acknowledge we were American.

Recalling that incident makes me realize that there has always been a harsh, uncouth, unattractive section of our society. I don’t mean physical appearance but unattractive souls that have now become elevated into the mainstream of our lives. The “isms” that used to be sidelined in the shadows – racism, misogyny, ignorance, and staggering anti-intellectualism – are now blatantly in the light for all to see. They are a result of an education system that is failing, a vocal minority that has failed to learn critical thinking skills, tolerance, acceptance, or even the golden rule. These people have felt voiceless and powerless. These are frightened, angry people making bad choices and more importantly forgetting that they are, in fact, Americans – you know, the good guys.

We are becoming uncivilized. Although Michelle Obama exhorted us to go high when others go low, that concept seems to elude everyone. We denigrate, we hound, we humiliate – all in the name of free speech. Our rampant isolationism from the rest of the world between the World Wars has now devolved into an even more insidious internal isolationism that promulgates hate, mistrust, and ignorance. Some still fighting – and losing – the Civil War will glom onto anyone who wants to return to the antebellum South, which they consider the good old days, for the good old boys.

Religions, as a rule, are myopic, declaring that they are the only way to believe. However, in this country, where the founding fathers were mostly deists, religion was never to hold sway over government. Nonetheless, over the years, doing a litmus test of faith, as opposed to an understanding of how government works, and the rights and privileges that we the people hold therein through our constitution, has become the deciding factor. How else can you explain the fear of the “other” propagated these past 15 years?

The slow decline of conservatism started when Robert Taft and his brand of conservative politics had a hissy when Eisenhower was nominated and the country ‘liked Ike and his policies, It refocused the intellectually driven, conservative party that espoused smaller government, fiscal management and individualism, and deadheaded it right into what is now called the alt-right. Calmer voices were silenced, and the stage was set for people to preach from their bully pulpits a deeper, fundamentally flawed brand that forgot what American ideals really were.

The greatest generation saved the world. The founding fathers declared a revolution that promised ‘life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness”. We the people, in order to form a more perfect union, created a system of laws, of moral and ethical behaviors founded from the 17th century Enlightenment. Where has all the reason gone?

Alexis de Tocqueville warned us that “When the past no longer illuminates the future, the spirit walks in darkness.” Have we so forgotten our glorious past that we’ve allowed ourselves to accept that incivility, misogyny, racism, bigotry, and all the other hates being spewed are the norm?

I want a return to the ‘good old days’ when politicians built consensus, and sought to improve the lives of our nation and the world. When we didn’t denigrate, disparage and denounce, but built up, buoyed and believed in our country and our citizens.

Are we the good guys? I’d like to think so. I was raised on the notion that the U.S. eventually comes to the right decision and we make the right choices.

Let’s find ourselves and become our best selves once again.

‘The Daily Show’ Debate Live Stream Is Literally Just A Zen Garden

Leave it to “The Daily Show” to broadcast the most bearable version of Wednesday night’s presidential debate.

Instead of running a split screen of Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton going at it, “The Daily Show” aired on Facebook Live two candles behind podiums in a Zen garden. Occasionally, a hand will enter the debate stage and very gently rake the sand.

You can still hear a low hum of the actual debate in the background, but it is mostly drowned out by the sounds of trickling water pouring from a miniature fountain and the peaceful flute music heard most commonly during a yoga class or a massage session.

We don’t have to tell you how stressful the third presidential debate is already turning out to be, but if you need a calming refuge away from the debate stage, watch the live stream below.

Halloween Trumpkins Are Back, And They’re Even More Terrifying

Sometimes, it’s the oddest of things that provide some sobering perspective.

When master carver Hugh McMahon put Donald Trump’s face on a pumpkin last year, it seemed possible, though unlikely, that the former reality star would actually become the Republican Party’s presidential nominee.

Innocent trick-or-treaters and their parents could pass by a “Trumpkin,” as a gourd carved with Trump’s likeness has been dubbed, and feel mostly certain that the guy who had just called Mexicans “drug dealers, criminals and rapists” was probably not going to make it past the primary election.

But now, the man who brags about sexually assaulting women and grabbing their genitals is a mere four weeks from an election that could make him the next president of the United States.

This Halloween season is terrifying, indeed.

Luckily, the internet is here to ease our pain. A whole slew of creative folks have made Trumpkins even more absurd and downright impressive than ever. Hopefully, this will be the last year Trump’s face on a pumpkin will be relevant.

Take a look at some of the most impressive carvings below.

    Are You Feeling Stretched?

    2016-10-10-1476136257-7848803-Arylofearpassyouby655.jpg

There is no question that we are living in intense and uncertain times where who we’ve been and how we’ve operated will not support us on the path ahead.

About every person I know who is awake, open-hearted, and desiring to live their greatest life, in alignment with their soul, is being called to their “edge” – personally, spiritually, emotionally, and physically.

It’s like our souls are beckoning…

“Let go of things that no longer fit and leap into the unknown.”

Like our hearts are pulling us out of our comfort zones and the status quo – in our relationships, jobs, homes, careers, wealth, health, lifestyles, and habits – to create the realities we desire for ourselves and this world, now.

It seems like anything that stems from false security, diminishes our most true presence or distracts us from our soul path is fair game. We either surrender it or we suffer through it.

And while most of us desire to live our greatest lives, be our greatest selves and create the world we know in our hearts is possible – if we are honest, stepping out and stretching past previous limits feels scary, uncomfortable and there are times we’d rather pull the covers over our heads, or quit and just resign ourselves to do something easier.

This is what I call a SOUL STRETCH.

You are being called to step forward into expressions, situations, realities that stretch you out of your comfort zone, the status quo or how you have previously done things (even if you have no idea of how it’s all going to work out.) And/or you are being called to let go and surrender things that previously worked, brought you success or even made you happy but now like an old outdated outfit, no longer fit.

You have three choices during a soul stretch. You can:

    1. Stay stuck, suffer and self sabotage (not recommended)
    2. Contract, hide and wait for the universe to yank you into your stretch (definitely not recommended)
    3. Lean into the stretch and grow, breakthrough limits and old ways that no longer serve and eventually soar and reach deeper levels of strength and faith and expression. (recommended)

So, assuming you choose option #3 (good choice!), the next question becomes, how do you navigate this soul stretch? How do you stretch without stressing yourself to the point you break?

Well, whenever I find myself in a Soul Stretch here are a few of the actions I take that support me to stretch, bend, extend, surrender, breathe and move through the process with as much grace and ease (and self compassion) as I can muster.

First… Name and claim the Soul Stretch.

Admit to yourself and share with any close confidants or mentors “I am in a Soul Stretch. This is what is LOOKS like… this is what it FEELS like.”

When you say out loud what is happening on the inside and give it voice, you release internal pressure that builds up because you are trying to ‘manage’ the situation vs. surrender to it. By actively stating and sharing your soul stretch you open the door for compassion – from yourself and others – and create space to lean and bend into the stretch vs. trying to rush your way through it. You can’t rush a soul stretch. Trying to rush it actually prolongs it!

Two… Call the Soul Stretch Neither Good Nor Bad.

It’s not bad or good, it just IS.

We have a bad habit as humans of wanting to label things as bad or good, which in most cases is NOT helpful. There is no need to judge a soul stretch. When I am in a soul stretch and people ask me “How are you Christine?” instead of responding “Good or fine” or “Wow, it’s challenging right now” I just say “I am in the yoga of life… some days I am in downward dog and it feels great, other days my legs are shaking to the point I think I might not make it!” And yes, sometimes, the soul stretch feels uncomfortable, like crap and you’d rather be anywhere else but in it. And other times, it’s uncomfortable but exhilarating. Regardless of what the soul stretch is bringing up for you emotionally, physically, and materially, let go of the label, and lean in to the knowing that it is leading forward on your soul path.

    Three… Feel into the Stretch.

Your body is your ally during a soul stretch. Are you stretching forward or surrendering backwards?

The more you involve your body the more you will move through your stretch with grace. Ask yourself, “Is my soul stretch calling me forward to extend? Or is my soul stretch calling me backwards to surrender?” Then put your body in a stretch, forward or in surrender, and feel the soul stretch that is occurring. This goes a long way in disengaging the madness moving through your mind due to the fear that gets stirred up whenever we soul stretch.

    Four… Get Support.

Support gives you super power to conjure up courage + flex your faith muscles.

During a Soul Stretch you need support. You can’t get through the stretch alone. Just like doing a backbend, it’s so much better if you have a spotter in case you fall. With a spotter you feel more confident. When I was in gymnastics if I had a spotter when attempting a backflip, no problem, I could flip all day! Take that arm behind me away, and I froze… fear. Surround yourself with mentors, sisterhood (for women) and brotherhood (for men), circles of other people soul stretching and people who just love you unconditionally.

And lastly … know you are not alone.

All people who choose to live awake and aware stretch often for their entire lives because we are always unfolding into more brilliant expressions of who we are. Together, we can stretch and surrender into anything. Alone, we fall into fear. Make sure you are receiving the support you need through your soul stretches… that is self-love!

Flawed Antibodies Might Be Producing Faulty Research Results

Scientific research is only as good as the tools used to carry out the experiments.

So with one of the most common scientific tools reportedly working consistently only 49 percent of the time, many scientists are concerned.

    The tool? Custom-built antibodies.

Like the antibodies produced naturally by the immune system in response to an invader such as a bacterium or virus, customized antibodies bind to specific molecular targets.

By measuring how well antibodies bind, scientists can determine whether a protein is present in a cell or tissue sample — or how protein levels change in response to certain tests.

This helps scientists understand how diseases develop as well as find new ways to treat or diagnose them.

But only if antibodies work as advertised.

“Antibodies need to be tested to ensure they are detecting the correct protein of interest and only that protein,” Deborah Berry, Ph.D., a research assistant professor and co-director of the Histopathology and Tissue Shared Resource at Georgetown University, told Healthline.

This “validation” can be done by the company that makes the antibody, by the researcher, or by a specialized laboratory like Berry’s.

    How are antibodies flawed?

Flawed antibodies come in many forms.

An antibody may bind to proteins other than the intended target. Or to no protein at all.
Experimental conditions — like the solutions used — can also affect how well an antibody works.

Even the same type of antibody made in separate batches — or from different companies — can give different results.

“As such, a ‘result’ with one antibody may be very different from a ‘result’ with another antibody, even when performed with the same samples under the same conditions,” said Berry.

Flawed antibodies can also create major headaches for scientists.

In one case, highlighted in the journal Nature, researchers from Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, Canada, used an antibody from a commercial protein detection kit to create a test for pancreatic cancer.

They eventually realized that the antibody didn’t bind to their target protein. Instead, it stuck to another cancer protein.

The result? Two years of hard work, thousands of patient samples, and $ 500,000 down the drain.

One of the researchers told Nature that in a rush to move their research along, they had failed to make sure the antibody worked as promised.

    Scoring system for antibodies

So if checking the quality of antibodies is so important to the integrity of scientific research, who should be making sure it happens?

“In terms of validating, it is really up to both the producer/seller, and the end user, i.e. the individual researcher,” Leonard Freedman, Ph.D., president of the nonprofit Global Biological Standards Institute (GBSI), told Healthline in an email.

But it’s no big secret among the scientific community that some companies sell “crappy” antibodies.

Which is why many scientists are pushing for better performing commercial antibodies.
“Companies need to be held to higher standards to ensure poor quality antibodies do not make their way onto the market,” said Berry.

At a meeting last week in Asilomar, California, hosted by GBSI, more than 100 biomedical experts offered a possible solution to inferior antibodies — create a scoring system that tells scientists how reliable a company’s antibodies are.

The scientists at the meeting — along with industry and government representatives — agreed on a strategy to create guidelines for validating research antibodies. These standards would shape the ratings system.

Currently, no standardized and widely accepted guidelines for antibody validation exist.

The attendees of the Asilomar meeting hope that better validation of antibodies will save research time and dollars.

It will also improve reproducibility in research — the ability of scientists to get the same results when they run an experiment again.

    Better training for scientists

Also coming out of the meeting is a roadmap for how antibody companies would be certified and how scientists can be better trained to use antibodies.

A survey last year by GBSI concluded that more than half of researchers were not trained on the importance of antibody validation.

Younger scientists were even more likely to disregard this key step.

So far, the antibody scoring system remains on the drawing board, but pressure from the right corners could help move it forward.

“In terms of implementation or compliance of the standards, the funders, journals, and even the host institutions should play critical roles,” said Freedman.

Berry said this might mean requiring “the scientist to demonstrate — either through distributing company documentation or in-lab testing — that the antibody used in the experiment appropriately detects the protein of interest.”

Major medical journals and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) have already taken steps to address the “reproducibility problem.” Poor antibodies, though, are just one piece of this.

And validating and scoring the millions of antibodies sold by dozens of companies would not be easy — or cheap.

“It is expensive to take every antibody through full validation, and the company would need to convey that cost to the customer,” said Berry. “The cost of validation raises the cost of the antibodies and reduces a company’s ability to compete for customers.”

Another Miss Universe Contestant Says She Was Fat-Shamed By Donald Trump

A second Miss Universe contestant has come forward to claim that she was fat-shamed by Donald Trump

Jodie Seal, who was Miss Australia in the 1996 event, told Inside Edition that the future Republican presidential nominee called the girls “some pretty horrible names.”

“He said to me, ‘suck your stomach in, or suck your gut in,’” she recalled. “He always wanted us to be sexy.”

She also described him as “controlling.”

“He’d walk by while we were eating,” Seal said. “He put a lot of the girls down.”

Trump is currently embroiled in a controversy over one of Seal’s fellow competitors. Alicia Machado, who won the event as Miss Venezuela, said Trump called her “Miss Piggy” for gaining weight after winning, and “Miss Houskeeping” because of her Latina heritage.

At one point after the competition, he even brought in reporters to watch her exercise

Hillary Clinton mentioned the insults during Monday night’s debate, and the following day, Trump doubled-down on his comments, saying Machado “gained a massive amount of weight.”

Seal said Machado “weighed less than I did, during the pageant, after the pageant. There’s no way she was big.”

A Marathon, A Heart Attack And A Comeback.

Ericka grew up in southern Vermont. She was a year younger than me and a class behind me in school. She had a contagious grin, played field hockey and ended up at many of the same outdoor “bon fires” that I did. High school is a time of fuzzy memories, flashes of lots of people crammed into a car listening to Dire Straits, late night runs to Friendly’s for ridiculously large hot fudge sundaes, laughter and just a general sense of togetherness. Looking back I don’t think I ever had more than a 10 min conversation with Ericka which was completely normal for high school.

In November of 2009, Ericka collapsed and her heart stopped at mile 23 of the Philadelphia Marathon. Her story and road back are remarkable and have made a deep impression on me. It was while I was out visiting a friend in Denver several years ago that Ericka’s story was passed on to me. I am passing it on now in hopes that it inspires and motivates someone else.

Ericka discovered a love for running in her 20’s during a marriage that needed to end. She would strap on her headphones and head for the trails where she could clear her head. She started running further and faster and decided to sign up for her first 5K. From then on she was hooked. She trained her way up and through a 10K, Half Marathon and then Marathon. She ran the New York Marathon and several others and then qualified for the Boston Marathon. Ericka ran with her dad in several of the marathon’s. Her father was a doctor and also an avid runner.

The Philadelphia marathon was to be a big family affair and her father, older brother, mother and several other family members were taking in the train in to be on the sidelines. Ericka recounts the night before as being full of laughter, carbs and anticipation.
Her last memory of race day was of posing for a family photo in the lobby of the hotel at 6:30 in the morning. Her family was lined up near the end of the course, waiting for her to run by. They knew her average times and when ten min went by with no sight of her, they began to worry. At 30 min, Ericka’s mother was frantic.

Around mile 23, Ericka pitched forward suddenly and fell to the ground, hitting her head. Witnesses recount that she did not appear to try and brace her fall with her hands. At that exact same moment a nurse named Mary Kay Silverman was running by Ericka in the opposite direction. The marathon course is set up so that the runners essentially run in a loop. The front runners are heading back to the finish line while many other runners are still heading out to the midpoint where they will turn around. The course diverges from mile 17 to 21, away from the runners heading to the finish line. Had Ericka collapsed even two minutes earlier, Mary Kay would have been on a different path and not even within eye sight of her.

At first people thought that Ericka had fainted but Mary Kay knew it was cardiac related and immediately set to work to keep her blood circulating. She began CPR. The second amazing piece of this story is that Ericka fell only a few yards from one of the official medic tents, staffed with EMT’s, on the course. There were three total tents/stations along the route, the other two were at the beginning and midpoint of the race. The fact that the EMT’s were able to reach Ericka within three minutes of her collapse and shock her heart back into rhythm undoubtedly saved her life. She was transferred immediately to Hahnemann University Hospital. Once there, Ericka was put into an induced coma while doctors began to lower her body temperature in order to try and prevent swelling and brain damage. Four days later on Wednesday, Ericka woke up. Her first vision was of many faces peering down at her. One can only imagine the complete disorientation and confusion she felt. Ericka was told briefly that she had been in an accident. She went back to sleep for another 24 hours. These are all the facts, but facts don’t convey the whole story.

Inside those four days, Ericka’s family lived hour by hour. Her big brother moved a cot into her hospital room and slept there every night by her side. Her mother, could barely stand to see her shivering, as she knew that Ericka hated to be cold. She had to stop herself from putting blankets over Ericka and trying to warm her up. The family held a constant around the clock vigil.
After Ericka woke up, her mother recounted that her brain was moving very slowly. Ericka asked for her cell phone on Thursday and took about a half hour to type a two line text message. Someone could have typed it for her but she insisted on doing it herself.

The diagnosis was a congenital heart defect. It had been there since birth. It could have failed her at any time during those other five marathons, but she never felt dizziness, chest pressure or labored breathing. In the weeks that followed Ericka grew well enough to leave the hospital in PA and return home to MA. Her father helped to find one of the top doctors in congenital heart surgery and her corrective “open heart” procedure was scheduled for the beginning of February at Mass General Hospital.

Those five weeks of waiting were among the hardest weeks of Ericka’s life. She was essentially on modified bed rest at home. She could not go to work but worst of all, for someone who is a top athlete and long distance runner, she could not exercise. She felt fine and grew frustrated with the long days and time at home.

The day of the surgery arrived and Ericka was terrified. Thoughts raced through her mind; maybe she had been saved by mistake and now she would not survive this surgery. She was sedated and then put under anesthesia and placed on a Heart/ Lung bypass machine. Ericka’s chest was opened up and the five hour long surgery began. It went off without a hitch and her heart was responding perfectly. The recovery began again in earnest.

As she began to heal physically, Ericka began to wrestle with the reality of what her life might be like going forward. She was 38 years old and the surgery had been a success but her cardiac doctor remained cautious and steadfast in his warning to her that she should not run again. So much of her self-identity was wrapped up in being a runner. She had the surgery with the hope that it would allow her to live a normal, active life. All of her cardiac stress tests came back beautifully, heart fully functioning and pumping blood perfectly.

Ericka was at a fork in the road. She could have accepted the doctor’s medical advice that she should not run again, or she could seek a second opinion. Ericka’s dad understood what running meant to her. He consulted other doctors around New England and found a specialist at Dartmouth Hitchcock Hospital who would re-evaluate Ericka. She had more stress tests, again they looked great. The new doctor agreed to clear Ericka for running, only no marathons. She was given instructions on how to monitor her heart rate, run with a heart monitor and was placed on a Beta Blocker. It was summer of 2011 when Ericka received this news by phone that she could run again. She took several weeks to let it sink in.

Her family was on vacation a few weeks later and during a lull in the activity, her father quietly pulled her aside and asked if she wanted to take a few spins around the track nearby. They went together and ran side by side slowly. And it was hard. It did not feel good. It felt like she was running up hill and she was hyper aware of every beat her heart was making. They ran for ten minutes that day. In the weeks and months that followed, Ericka began to build her strength and endurance back up slowly. She ran only indoors, on a treadmill and in a gym that had a defibrillator. She gradually increased her mileage. She entered a 5K and then a few more.

Ericka’s biggest triumph was the completion of the Disney Orlando half marathon in October three years ago. She ran the race with Mary Kay Silverman by her side. The two have become very close. I was able to reach MaryKay Silverman just this week as I was editing this article. I asked her how that day in 2009 had impacted her life. Mary Kay relayed that although she was an RN and the Director of Emergency Services at Hahnemann Hospital it was much more nerve racking to be doing CPR outside of a hospital, on the ground and with no one else around for backup. She said the EMT’s arrived in only a few minutes but those minutes felt much longer at the time. Once they did arrive and take over, amazingly, MaryKay got up and rejoined the marathon, officially finishing the race. She hardly remembers those last 3.2 miles but felt it was important for her to try and finish.

When MaryKay got to work the next day at the hospital she called up to the ICU and asked if a woman in her 30’s had been brought in in cardiac arrest, fearing Ericka had not survived. She remembers feeling so grateful to hear that Ericka was alive and that they were keeping her on the cooling protocol and monitoring her brain for swelling. When Ericka did wake up, she and her family were told that the nurse who had saved her life, actually worked there in the hospital and Ericka asked if she could meet her. MaryKay described this reunion as emotional for everyone. In all the years she has worked as a nurse this experience impacted her more than any other. She kept in touch with Ericka while Ericka was waiting for her heart surgery and in the months afterward kept checking in by email and phone. When Ericka was fully recovered she went to spend a weekend with MaryKay. They talked for hours and discovered that they had so much in common. In the seven years since that fateful day, Ericka and MaryKay have become fast friends.

On a personal note Ericka, has inspired me to start running. The image of Ericka and her dad running around the track the first day back and how hard it must have been mentally and physically stayed with me. When I felt like I could not get enough air in my lungs during runs or became frustrated with my slow progress, I thought of her and I kept going. 6 months later I trained for my first 5k. Today I run four times a week and I am training for a 10k.

In the years since her collapse Ericka has gone on to make the world a better place. She has established a yearly 12 days of giving tradition where she chooses a different charity for twelve days and posts links and information on her social media, raising awareness and asking people to donate if they can. She is one person but she has inspired so many.

People may read this story and wonder if Ericka is taking undue risk. I see a woman who is choosing to live life on her own terms. None of us know how long we have and most of us forget to live each day to the fullest. If you are reading this story and fighting your way back from something, I hope that it will inspire you too. Ericka believes that when your time is up, it’s up. It was just not her time.

    We Wear Orange

On Friday our family wears orange. You can’t compare pain and hurt like the one our people endured in the Residential Schools. You only have to ask someone in the community about the abuse that the schools caused, and each one could name 3 or 4 elders, uncles, or grandmas that endured the horrid pain. My mother never ended up in the schools but instead spent her years in the foster care system. When she was 9, she came downstairs looking for her brother, who lived in the home with her. The response to her inquiry, was simply “Your brother’s been adopted and you will never see him again.”

How does healing begin in a community that is still looked upon with such judgment and racism? Even growing up as the “lonely Indian”, I never shared my Metis heritage. Because you don’t tell people you’re “mixed”; my mother made sure of that. We only shared our Cherokee roots. I remember though, even then, the shame behind my culture in school and the mocking names people would give me when I would share small pieces of my culture and of my community even though, for the most part, I looked like a white girl. And once I shared my Aboriginal background, their faces changed and hardened slightly, as if they weren’t surprised that I was from an alcoholic single-parent family.

So much healing has to happen. The elders that taught, and continue to teach us, never share their anger like I expected they would. Only healing. Desperate to heal their community from the abuse that has since manifested into failed relationships, addictions and suicide.

So, as the lonely Indian girl that watched her family suffer from abuse, that looked in the eyes of people whose pain was so frightening from the memories of the schools, we stand. We wear orange shirts together. We will recollect and hope for the generations to come. But we won’t forget. We honor the courage and spirits of those who endured the schools. And teach our children of the healing that will come.

375 Top Scientists Warn Us Not To Vote For Trump

Hundreds of the world’s leading scientists, including famed physicist Stephen Hawking, warn in an open letter Tuesday that a Donald Trump win in November would prove disastrous to global efforts against climate change.

The Republican presidential nominee, who once claimed global warming is a hoax “created by and for the Chinese,” vowed in May that he would “cancel” the historic Paris climate agreement.

Opting out of that pact, write the 375 members of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, including 30 Nobel Prize winners, would have “severe and long-lasting” consequences, both for the planet and for the United States’ credibility.

“A ‘Parexit,’” the letter states, “would send a clear signal to the rest of the world: ‘The United States does not care about the global problem of human-caused climate change. You are on your own.”

The U.S. and China ― the world’s two largest emitters of greenhouse gases ― officially ratified the Paris agreement earlier this month, a major step toward having the deal take effect this year. More than 170 nations signed the Paris agreement in April, committing to fight climate change by cutting carbon emissions.

“The United States can and must be a major player in developing innovative solutions to the problem of reducing emissions of greenhouse gases,” the letter says. “Nations that find innovative ways of decarbonizing energy systems and sequestering CO2 will be the economic leaders of the 21st century. Walking away from Paris makes it less likely that the U.S. will have a global leadership role, politically, economically, or morally. We cannot afford to cross that tipping point.”

Also among the signees is former Harvard biology professor E.O. Wilson, commonly known as the “father of biodiversity,” who earlier this month told The Huffington Post that his “main worry right now is that the Republican candidate might win the election.”

Trump has made his feelings about climate change and environmental protection alarmingly clear. He’s said weather “goes up and it goes down,” and warned that unlike him, Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton wants to “shut down the mines.” Trump’s senior economic adviser, Stephen Moore, said that lifting all restrictions on mining, fracking and drilling is among the ways the GOP candidate plans to pay for his costly proposals.

Although Tuesday’s letter doesn’t mention Trump by name, it is a clear attempt to steer Americans away from casting votes in his favor come November.

“Human-caused climate change is not a belief, a hoax, or a conspiracy. It is a physical reality,” the scientists write. “During the Presidential primary campaign, claims were made that the Earth is not warming, or that warming is due to purely natural causes outside of human control. Such claims are inconsistent with reality.”

Famed astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson didn’t sign the letter, but endorsed it in a statement Tuesday to Mashable.

“For lawmakers to not heed the advice of esteemed scientists on matters of science, in this the 21st century, signals the beginning of the end of an informed democracy,” Tyson told the publication.

7 Things You Need To Know To Tame The Monkey Mind

The monkey mind is something every modern human is familiar with. It’s that incessant thought stream that no matter how hard you try never seems to settle down.

It’s the worries that keep you up at night, the assumptions that cause you grief, the projections you make about the future and the regrets and sentiments you go over from the past.

To tame the monkey mind takes commitment and a deep inner desire for peace. Calming the monkey mind is the first step on the path towards life mastery.

When you consciously realize that your thoughts are energy, and that the energetic implications of what you maintain focus on are actually creating your life to be based in either joy or suffering, you can be empowered to take control over your monkey mind and access the peace of mind that makes sheer existence a true gift.

    1. Seek Common Ground and Connection

Division is a distraction from the divine. When you see yourself as a lone wolf, you lose sight of the pack, and you struggle to survive, let alone thrive. Yet when you can look around and feel a connection to all the people you encounter, everything changes.

You start to focus on connection instead of seeing everything as separate. Nothing is separate. The sun in the sky keeps us all alive. The people around you complaining about their mundane daily disturbances are going through the motions just like you are, they’re merely at a different point in their personal evolution.

Instead of focusing on your independence and feeding your loneliness with divisive thought patterns, bring the focus back to finding common ground.

When you do this you shift your entire perspective.

    2. Look Deeper Than the Story

Society, the people you surround yourself with, your past experiences and your present belief system all work to strengthen the story you’re narrating in your head all day long. It’s so easy to attach to your story and your thoughts are the glue that binds you there.

If you struggle with self-esteem and that’s a part of your story then without a doubt your thoughts are the roots keeping that belief alive.

When you can remain present and focus on how you feel in each moment you can start to release the constant narration and let go of the belief structures embedded in your story that hold you back from realizing your true potential.

    3. Realize YOU Are Not Your Thoughts

Endless thoughts flow through your mind. A thousand thoughts pass through your mind every hour, and you have two options.

The first option is to allow your mind to act like a hose. Thoughts stream in through the top of the funnel and are directed out, they’re let go of, and they flow elsewhere without attachment.

The second option is to allow your mind to act like a filter. Thoughts attempt to pass through the filter but they get trapped. The filter of your mind clings to them for analysis and attachment. The filter gets all clogged up full of thoughts based in what you want and what you don’t want.

When you believe that every thought matters, that every thought that enters your brain is you, and that every thought needs to be examined, you become overburdened, overwhelmed, confused, directionless and prone to overanalyzing. You create internal resistance because you believe on a subconscious level that you are your thoughts.

When you allow your thoughts to show up and pass away without clinging on to them in an attempt to analyze and integrate, you access a freedom that few people embody. You enter into a vibrational state of allowing which is expansive and creates space for you to access the peace and pure joy of being.

    4. Let Go of Excuses

I don’t have time. I’m too busy. These are everyone’s favorite excuses for not allowing connection, acceptance, and peace to enter your life on the level of experience.

When you’re ready to let go of the monkey mind and free yourself from the chains that keep you stuck in your head and separated from the world around you, you stop making excuses.

Breaking down the mental constructs that you’ve been attached to and strengthening for your entire life is no easy task, but it is possible and the more excuses you make, the longer it will take to break away from the mental chatter.

    5. Develop a Drama Free Mentality

There’s a tendency in our society to become addicted to drama. The boldest example of this is television, you flick on the TV and suddenly you’re immersed in a world wrought with drama.

Breaking the cycle of drama will create more peace in your life, thoughts and relationships. Over time you can consciously train your brain to let go of the things you would normally make a big dramatic deal over.

Your life can be whatever you want it to be, a soap opera or a peaceful expansive existence that plays out moment by moment.

    6. Release Judgement

What were they thinking? What’s wrong with them? Why are they doing that?

Judgment creates an inner resistance, a pushing against what is without ever changing what is. When you allow yourself to move into acceptance, even with the things you don’t particularly like, the monkey mind backs down.

The monkey mind thrives on judgment and drama, it’s the fuel that feeds the fire of your thoughts.

When you would normally jump into judgment, whether it’s over someone else’s actions or your own, try to practice allowing things to just be as they are. Allowing isn’t the same as condoning, it’s simply an energetic shift which helps you release attachment and aversion, the monkey mind’s favorite snacks.

    7. Practice Awareness

Practice awareness of the thoughts streaming through your mind. You can’t one day wake up and decide to tame the monkey mind without bringing awareness of the thoughts themselves to the forefront. Awareness is the balm that soothes the irritation the monkey mind loves to create.

Awareness is different from attachment because it integrates with the energy of allowing. Thoughts pass by and your awareness shines a light upon them without the incessant desire to unconsciously attach to their meaning.

In every moment you can bring awareness to the forefront of what you’re feeling and thinking. When you notice anger and irritation bubbling up let yourself become consciously aware of these thoughts and your reaction to them and then just let them go.

5 Body Imbalances You Might Unknowingly Experience

Technology has improved our lives in many ways, but not without some consequences, including these five common bodily aches. Here’s how to address the pain without pulling the plug.

There’s no doubt that technology has its perks, from allowing us to work from all corners of the earth to meditating via an app at the touch of a finger. But despite the many advantages technology brings us every single day, it also has a downside–one that can be very painful if ignored. Americans suffer from a number of ailments relating to technology, including a type of back and shoulder pain that is now often referred to as “tech neck” (the repeated act of craning your neck forward and down over a screen, resulting in discomfort that can lead to strain and stiffness). The solution, however, isn’t to disconnect and revert back to powerless Pilgrim living. Instead, heed this advice from Sonima.com‘s pain and anatomy advisor, Pete Egoscue: “If an activity is hurting us, take a look at the body. Pain is the body’s way of trying to tell us something.”

Related: Understanding the Source of Back Pain

What is your body saying? It could be hinting at an imbalance. Maybe you’re not vertically loaded properly–meaning your head, shoulders, hips, knees, and ankles aren’t stacking up right. Or perhaps you’re just not bearing weight evenly, says Egoscue, creator of the Egoscue Method for pain-free living.

To find out exactly what your body is telling you, tune in. Once you start paying attention to the subtle signals (usually accompanied by a minor ache), stretch or shift positions to continue enjoying your TV, laptop, smartphone or whatever device is captivating your attention in comfort and with peace of body and mind. Use Egoscue’s guide below to help translate your body’s messages and take appropriate action.

When this hurts: BACK, SHOULDERS, HEAD
Your body may be saying…change the way you sit.
Sitting with your shoulders slumped forward, hip flexors shortened, and back rounded can put extra stress on your lower back, which may curve into a ‘C’ shape instead of its natural ‘S’ shape. This pain doesn’t come from only sitting, but also from being misaligned. Your body is compensating, Egoscue says.
Listen and learn: Look down at your feet. You want them hip-width apart facing forward with toes slightly turned in. Your knees will want to come together, but keep them out, he says. Then pull your shoulders down, relax your abs, and roll up and forward with your hips, putting an arch back into your lower back with your pelvis. In this position, he says, you’re vertically loaded. “That’s the way you sit without effort. Your body has just adapted and adjusted to what you have conditioned it to do.” Sit like this and you could notice back and shoulder pain dissipate and even see improvements in issues, like constipation and digestion, he says.

To learn the four other body imbalances that you might unknowingly experience, continue reading the original article on Sonima.com.

St. Cloud Police Chief William Blair Anderson Shuts Down Fox News Hosts On Live TV

The police chief of St. Cloud, Minnesota, refused to play along when Fox News hosts tried to get him to extend the blame for Saturday’s knife attack to the local Somali immigrant community.

Chief William Blair Anderson was on “Fox & Friends” on Monday to talk about the attack, which left eight people injured, when cohost Steve Doocy tried to tie the incident to Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s call for “extreme vetting” of immigrants.

“Do you share his concern about who is coming into the country?” Doocy asked.

In remarks posted online by Media Matters, the chief replied:

“My job is public safety. It’s not immigration policy. I can tell you that the vast majority of all of our citizens, no matter their ethnicity, are fine, hard-working people, and now is not the time for us to be divisive. We already have a very cohesive community, and I expect that this will draw us even closer together. But at the end of the day, our job is public safety, period.”

Cohost Ainsley Earhardt tried to press the issue, claiming “Minnesota leads the nation” in people leaving the country to join terrorists and asking if Anderson receives cooperation from local imams.

“How do you fight this?” Earhardt asked. “Because it’s a mentality that they’re learning, many of them, behind closed doors.”

    Anderson responded:

We actually work very well not just with our East African community, but all of our community. We meet regularly with any number of people, whether they are advocates for a specific ethnicity or different cause. It’s one of things that makes St. Cloud a wonderful place to live, and I know that might sound corny, but it’s the truth. We have established and maintained a very good rapport with our East African community and our community at large.

3 Basic Choices To Empower Our Relationships

There are so many things we can all do to improve our existing relationships, regardless of their nature. But if we only applied these 3 Basic Choices To Empower Our Relationships, we would certainly make them more fulfilling for all parties involved.

    2016-09-19-1474308214-435847-Couplewithbikes_iStock_70626075_LARGE.jpg

    #1 Choose Loyalty
This of course means being there when it matters. But it also means standing up for the relationship by not getting involved in gossip talks with others, about our lover, friend, sibling or whoever that person may be. The loyalty we show when the person is there to see is powerful, but the one we display to others when that person is not there to witness, can make the relationship bullet proof.

    #2 Choose To Give
Relationships are, in many instances, like joint bank accounts. The account holders can only withdraw what they’ve put in. And the more they put in, the more “compound interest” they can expect to reap! Contrary to common belief, our main responsibility in a relationship is to give. It’s always easy to question the other “joint account holder’s” behavior, but if we have the relationship at heart, we will seek to give first.

    #3 Choose Truthfulness
There’s always a fork in the road in any relationships. One side of the fork seems to commonly offer a wider and smoother path, whereas the other often looks narrower and bumpier. This comes in the form of an event or a situation when we have to choose between the plain truth or… a “twisted” one. As hard as it is to say, we should always choose the truth. When we do, not only does it display that we stand for our word, it also echoes our loyalty and our willingness to continue to give to the relationship.

The endless choices we now have in all areas of life, affect our perceptions. Perceptions like the new “flavor of the month” or the novelty, ought to be better than the “old” one… Or the sense that everything is disposable, because after all, I can always get a new upgraded version of what I have… It brings also the notion of “change,” that we have to look for change at all costs, because if we don’t, we may become obsolete or “passé.”

When it comes to our relationships, we seriously think that we have to be very cautious about the subtle effects of the “endless choices society” we live in. We think it’s time for all of us to make basic choices that will empower the relationships we cherish. The kind of choices that are not new, on the contrary, they are rooted, old fashioned choices, that define who we are, where we come from, and more importantly can remind the other person in the relationship, what we intend to continue to build upon.

Protester With Oxygen Tank Allegedly ‘Cold-Cocked’ By Trump Supporter At N.C. Rally

A woman protesting at a Donald Trump event in North Carolina on Monday night was allegedly assaulted by a supporter of the Republican presidential candidate.

“I said you better learn to speak Russian, and I said the first two words are going to be, ha ha. [The suspect] stopped in his tracks, and he turned around and just cold-cocked me,” Shirley Teter, 69, told the local ABC station WLOS.

Teter has chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and needs an oxygen tank to breathe, the Citizen Times reported. She told the newspaper she was in the hospital until 2 a.m., has pain in her jaw and can’t chew

Authorities have issued a warrant for Richard Campbell, 73, of Edisto Island, South Carolina, in connection with the attack, WLOS reported.

Five other people were also arrested in connection with unruly behavior at Monday night’s rally. In one incident that went viral, a man was caught on video slapping protesters.

“People need to know what state of agitation [Donald Trump] puts people in,” Teter said, per the Citizen Times.

    I’m A Failure!

During my career in Academia, I have noticed an unhealthy trend among students. It’s not drinking or the latest designer drug, but it can be more harmful than both. The trend is the obsessively self-critical thinking that happens when students do something that doesn’t go “right”. They fall into the judgmental trap of thinking they are a failure or something is wrong with them.

We, as a society, are taught from an early age that being hard on ourselves is the only way to make things better… or make us better. We are taught that being self-critical is the driving factor for success.

There is a side effect to this kind of thinking. As students find out that they are not the best in class, or that the projects they created don’t receive the applause they think they deserve, many immediately turn to an obsessive, self-critical way of thinking. They bash themselves and judge themselves negatively. As a result, students become more stressed out, feel insecure, become depressed, and question their own self-worth. If not addressed early on, this kind of thinking can make the college experience a miserable time for any student.

There is a way to fix this kind of thinking, but few talk about it. One of the greatest keys to being successful in life and eliminating obsessive self-criticism is having Mindful Self-Compassion. Yep, that’s right. Compassion for your “self.”

Wait, what? Self-compassion? I know, it sounds somewhat odd to say out loud, but rarely do we consider showing ourselves kindness. We often show friends more caring and compassion than we show ourself. We’ve been trained to be self-critical and self-judgmental. Self-compassion goes against the natural order… or so many think. Some even think that if we are self-compassionate, we are being lazy and complacent.

But research has found that self-criticism only sabotages us and produces a variety of negative consequences. According to Kristin Neff, Ph.D., Associate Professor in human development at the University of Texas at Austin, self-criticism can lead to lowered self-esteem, anxiety and depression. Mindful self-compassion, on the other hand, can lead to greater understanding and peace of mind… and yes, personal and professional success.

So what is “Mindful Self-Compassion”? Actually, it’s quite simple. It can be broken down into three parts.

    1. Mindfulness: Mindfulness is about slowing your mind down to become aware of what you are thinking or doing in the present moment. It involves turning off your autopilot response and noticing what is going on, meaning that you pay attention to your thoughts and feelings without attaching any judgment to them.

Being mindful creates a distance between your thoughts or experiences and your reaction to them. It’s almost like observing your thoughts in the third person. You become aware of your thoughts and just notice what’s going on… you don’t sweep them under the rug and you don’t need to obsess about them either. You become aware, make a nonjudgmental note about the thought, (i.e. “There’s Mr. Negative again”.), tell yourself you’re okay, let the thought go, and return to the present moment.

Being mindful of self-critical thoughts will help you to be more objective about any emotions that may try to hitch a ride.

    2. Self-kindness: Accept that it is okay to be kind, gentle and understanding with yourself when you’re suffering.

It’s easy to be loving and kind to our friends. It’s time you do the same for yourself. If you mess up on a test, don’t beat yourself up. Think about why you did badly, then plan on studying more next time or find a tutor. People don’t think your project or assignment is the best? So what. You are learning, and making mistakes is part of that process. Take the criticism as tips on how to do better next time. Accept that you aren’t going to be perfect… no one is. Frankly, I don’t know anyone who is “perfect”… and those who think they are fall into the “ego-maniac” category. That’s not where you want to be.

    3. Common humanity: Recognize that you are not alone in the self-criticism struggle. We are all struggling. We often think we’re the only ones to make mistakes, feel rejected or fail. Guess what? We all have these experiences; it’s part of being human. We tend not to discuss our struggles, but if you share your experience with others, I bet you’ll find that they have felt the same way at some point. You are not alone. Talking about it may help to negate the power of negative self-talk and criticism.

I know… it’s easier said than done. When you are stuck in a self-criticism rut, try the following mindful self-compassion exercise:

    ▪ Sit somewhere quiet and pay attention to your breath going in and out of your nose or mouth. Notice how your breath feels as it enters and exits. Stay focused on this for a couple of minutes and then repeat to yourself, “May I be kind to myself, may I know that I am a good person, may I be at peace, may I know that all is well.” Do this for two or more minutes when you feel the negative thoughts creeping in.

This exercise will slow down your thoughts, help train your mind to let go of negative self-talk, and accept that you are okay. For more exercises on gaining mindful self-compassion for yourself, check out the meditations here:

A couple notes for the nay-sayers:

    1. Self-compassion is not self-pitying.
Self-pity is being obsessed and immersed in your own problems and forgetting that others struggle, too. Self-compassion is much different. Being self-compassionate is seeing things as they are –while not giving critical self-talk power. Self-compassion focuses on alleviating suffering while self-pity leaves you rolling in self-loathing.

    2. Self-criticism is not an effective motivator.
Challenging yourself, recognizing weaknesses and growing from them are productive. However, there’s actually nothing productive or motivating about criticizing yourself. When you criticize yourself you are creating fear of failure and you may wind up losing faith in yourself. Even if you do achieve great things, you’re often miserable because you live in a world of self-loathing and criticism. That doesn’t sound like a very happy world.

I wish you the best. Be kind to yourself!
