Another Miss Universe Contestant Says She Was Fat-Shamed By Donald Trump

A second Miss Universe contestant has come forward to claim that she was fat-shamed by Donald Trump

Jodie Seal, who was Miss Australia in the 1996 event, told Inside Edition that the future Republican presidential nominee called the girls “some pretty horrible names.”

“He said to me, ‘suck your stomach in, or suck your gut in,’” she recalled. “He always wanted us to be sexy.”

She also described him as “controlling.”

“He’d walk by while we were eating,” Seal said. “He put a lot of the girls down.”

Trump is currently embroiled in a controversy over one of Seal’s fellow competitors. Alicia Machado, who won the event as Miss Venezuela, said Trump called her “Miss Piggy” for gaining weight after winning, and “Miss Houskeeping” because of her Latina heritage.

At one point after the competition, he even brought in reporters to watch her exercise

Hillary Clinton mentioned the insults during Monday night’s debate, and the following day, Trump doubled-down on his comments, saying Machado “gained a massive amount of weight.”

Seal said Machado “weighed less than I did, during the pageant, after the pageant. There’s no way she was big.”

A Marathon, A Heart Attack And A Comeback.

Ericka grew up in southern Vermont. She was a year younger than me and a class behind me in school. She had a contagious grin, played field hockey and ended up at many of the same outdoor “bon fires” that I did. High school is a time of fuzzy memories, flashes of lots of people crammed into a car listening to Dire Straits, late night runs to Friendly’s for ridiculously large hot fudge sundaes, laughter and just a general sense of togetherness. Looking back I don’t think I ever had more than a 10 min conversation with Ericka which was completely normal for high school.

In November of 2009, Ericka collapsed and her heart stopped at mile 23 of the Philadelphia Marathon. Her story and road back are remarkable and have made a deep impression on me. It was while I was out visiting a friend in Denver several years ago that Ericka’s story was passed on to me. I am passing it on now in hopes that it inspires and motivates someone else.

Ericka discovered a love for running in her 20’s during a marriage that needed to end. She would strap on her headphones and head for the trails where she could clear her head. She started running further and faster and decided to sign up for her first 5K. From then on she was hooked. She trained her way up and through a 10K, Half Marathon and then Marathon. She ran the New York Marathon and several others and then qualified for the Boston Marathon. Ericka ran with her dad in several of the marathon’s. Her father was a doctor and also an avid runner.

The Philadelphia marathon was to be a big family affair and her father, older brother, mother and several other family members were taking in the train in to be on the sidelines. Ericka recounts the night before as being full of laughter, carbs and anticipation.
Her last memory of race day was of posing for a family photo in the lobby of the hotel at 6:30 in the morning. Her family was lined up near the end of the course, waiting for her to run by. They knew her average times and when ten min went by with no sight of her, they began to worry. At 30 min, Ericka’s mother was frantic.

Around mile 23, Ericka pitched forward suddenly and fell to the ground, hitting her head. Witnesses recount that she did not appear to try and brace her fall with her hands. At that exact same moment a nurse named Mary Kay Silverman was running by Ericka in the opposite direction. The marathon course is set up so that the runners essentially run in a loop. The front runners are heading back to the finish line while many other runners are still heading out to the midpoint where they will turn around. The course diverges from mile 17 to 21, away from the runners heading to the finish line. Had Ericka collapsed even two minutes earlier, Mary Kay would have been on a different path and not even within eye sight of her.

At first people thought that Ericka had fainted but Mary Kay knew it was cardiac related and immediately set to work to keep her blood circulating. She began CPR. The second amazing piece of this story is that Ericka fell only a few yards from one of the official medic tents, staffed with EMT’s, on the course. There were three total tents/stations along the route, the other two were at the beginning and midpoint of the race. The fact that the EMT’s were able to reach Ericka within three minutes of her collapse and shock her heart back into rhythm undoubtedly saved her life. She was transferred immediately to Hahnemann University Hospital. Once there, Ericka was put into an induced coma while doctors began to lower her body temperature in order to try and prevent swelling and brain damage. Four days later on Wednesday, Ericka woke up. Her first vision was of many faces peering down at her. One can only imagine the complete disorientation and confusion she felt. Ericka was told briefly that she had been in an accident. She went back to sleep for another 24 hours. These are all the facts, but facts don’t convey the whole story.

Inside those four days, Ericka’s family lived hour by hour. Her big brother moved a cot into her hospital room and slept there every night by her side. Her mother, could barely stand to see her shivering, as she knew that Ericka hated to be cold. She had to stop herself from putting blankets over Ericka and trying to warm her up. The family held a constant around the clock vigil.
After Ericka woke up, her mother recounted that her brain was moving very slowly. Ericka asked for her cell phone on Thursday and took about a half hour to type a two line text message. Someone could have typed it for her but she insisted on doing it herself.

The diagnosis was a congenital heart defect. It had been there since birth. It could have failed her at any time during those other five marathons, but she never felt dizziness, chest pressure or labored breathing. In the weeks that followed Ericka grew well enough to leave the hospital in PA and return home to MA. Her father helped to find one of the top doctors in congenital heart surgery and her corrective “open heart” procedure was scheduled for the beginning of February at Mass General Hospital.

Those five weeks of waiting were among the hardest weeks of Ericka’s life. She was essentially on modified bed rest at home. She could not go to work but worst of all, for someone who is a top athlete and long distance runner, she could not exercise. She felt fine and grew frustrated with the long days and time at home.

The day of the surgery arrived and Ericka was terrified. Thoughts raced through her mind; maybe she had been saved by mistake and now she would not survive this surgery. She was sedated and then put under anesthesia and placed on a Heart/ Lung bypass machine. Ericka’s chest was opened up and the five hour long surgery began. It went off without a hitch and her heart was responding perfectly. The recovery began again in earnest.

As she began to heal physically, Ericka began to wrestle with the reality of what her life might be like going forward. She was 38 years old and the surgery had been a success but her cardiac doctor remained cautious and steadfast in his warning to her that she should not run again. So much of her self-identity was wrapped up in being a runner. She had the surgery with the hope that it would allow her to live a normal, active life. All of her cardiac stress tests came back beautifully, heart fully functioning and pumping blood perfectly.

Ericka was at a fork in the road. She could have accepted the doctor’s medical advice that she should not run again, or she could seek a second opinion. Ericka’s dad understood what running meant to her. He consulted other doctors around New England and found a specialist at Dartmouth Hitchcock Hospital who would re-evaluate Ericka. She had more stress tests, again they looked great. The new doctor agreed to clear Ericka for running, only no marathons. She was given instructions on how to monitor her heart rate, run with a heart monitor and was placed on a Beta Blocker. It was summer of 2011 when Ericka received this news by phone that she could run again. She took several weeks to let it sink in.

Her family was on vacation a few weeks later and during a lull in the activity, her father quietly pulled her aside and asked if she wanted to take a few spins around the track nearby. They went together and ran side by side slowly. And it was hard. It did not feel good. It felt like she was running up hill and she was hyper aware of every beat her heart was making. They ran for ten minutes that day. In the weeks and months that followed, Ericka began to build her strength and endurance back up slowly. She ran only indoors, on a treadmill and in a gym that had a defibrillator. She gradually increased her mileage. She entered a 5K and then a few more.

Ericka’s biggest triumph was the completion of the Disney Orlando half marathon in October three years ago. She ran the race with Mary Kay Silverman by her side. The two have become very close. I was able to reach MaryKay Silverman just this week as I was editing this article. I asked her how that day in 2009 had impacted her life. Mary Kay relayed that although she was an RN and the Director of Emergency Services at Hahnemann Hospital it was much more nerve racking to be doing CPR outside of a hospital, on the ground and with no one else around for backup. She said the EMT’s arrived in only a few minutes but those minutes felt much longer at the time. Once they did arrive and take over, amazingly, MaryKay got up and rejoined the marathon, officially finishing the race. She hardly remembers those last 3.2 miles but felt it was important for her to try and finish.

When MaryKay got to work the next day at the hospital she called up to the ICU and asked if a woman in her 30’s had been brought in in cardiac arrest, fearing Ericka had not survived. She remembers feeling so grateful to hear that Ericka was alive and that they were keeping her on the cooling protocol and monitoring her brain for swelling. When Ericka did wake up, she and her family were told that the nurse who had saved her life, actually worked there in the hospital and Ericka asked if she could meet her. MaryKay described this reunion as emotional for everyone. In all the years she has worked as a nurse this experience impacted her more than any other. She kept in touch with Ericka while Ericka was waiting for her heart surgery and in the months afterward kept checking in by email and phone. When Ericka was fully recovered she went to spend a weekend with MaryKay. They talked for hours and discovered that they had so much in common. In the seven years since that fateful day, Ericka and MaryKay have become fast friends.

On a personal note Ericka, has inspired me to start running. The image of Ericka and her dad running around the track the first day back and how hard it must have been mentally and physically stayed with me. When I felt like I could not get enough air in my lungs during runs or became frustrated with my slow progress, I thought of her and I kept going. 6 months later I trained for my first 5k. Today I run four times a week and I am training for a 10k.

In the years since her collapse Ericka has gone on to make the world a better place. She has established a yearly 12 days of giving tradition where she chooses a different charity for twelve days and posts links and information on her social media, raising awareness and asking people to donate if they can. She is one person but she has inspired so many.

People may read this story and wonder if Ericka is taking undue risk. I see a woman who is choosing to live life on her own terms. None of us know how long we have and most of us forget to live each day to the fullest. If you are reading this story and fighting your way back from something, I hope that it will inspire you too. Ericka believes that when your time is up, it’s up. It was just not her time.

We Wear Orange

On Friday our family wears orange. You can’t compare pain and hurt like the one our people endured in the Residential Schools. You only have to ask someone in the community about the abuse that the schools caused, and each one could name 3 or 4 elders, uncles, or grandmas that endured the horrid pain. My mother never ended up in the schools but instead spent her years in the foster care system. When she was 9, she came downstairs looking for her brother, who lived in the home with her. The response to her inquiry, was simply “Your brother’s been adopted and you will never see him again.”

How does healing begin in a community that is still looked upon with such judgment and racism? Even growing up as the “lonely Indian”, I never shared my Metis heritage. Because you don’t tell people you’re “mixed”; my mother made sure of that. We only shared our Cherokee roots. I remember though, even then, the shame behind my culture in school and the mocking names people would give me when I would share small pieces of my culture and of my community even though, for the most part, I looked like a white girl. And once I shared my Aboriginal background, their faces changed and hardened slightly, as if they weren’t surprised that I was from an alcoholic single-parent family.

So much healing has to happen. The elders that taught, and continue to teach us, never share their anger like I expected they would. Only healing. Desperate to heal their community from the abuse that has since manifested into failed relationships, addictions and suicide.

So, as the lonely Indian girl that watched her family suffer from abuse, that looked in the eyes of people whose pain was so frightening from the memories of the schools, we stand. We wear orange shirts together. We will recollect and hope for the generations to come. But we won’t forget. We honor the courage and spirits of those who endured the schools. And teach our children of the healing that will come.

375 Top Scientists Warn Us Not To Vote For Trump

Hundreds of the world’s leading scientists, including famed physicist Stephen Hawking, warn in an open letter Tuesday that a Donald Trump win in November would prove disastrous to global efforts against climate change.

The Republican presidential nominee, who once claimed global warming is a hoax “created by and for the Chinese,” vowed in May that he would “cancel” the historic Paris climate agreement.

Opting out of that pact, write the 375 members of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, including 30 Nobel Prize winners, would have “severe and long-lasting” consequences, both for the planet and for the United States’ credibility.

“A ‘Parexit,’” the letter states, “would send a clear signal to the rest of the world: ‘The United States does not care about the global problem of human-caused climate change. You are on your own.”

The U.S. and China ― the world’s two largest emitters of greenhouse gases ― officially ratified the Paris agreement earlier this month, a major step toward having the deal take effect this year. More than 170 nations signed the Paris agreement in April, committing to fight climate change by cutting carbon emissions.

“The United States can and must be a major player in developing innovative solutions to the problem of reducing emissions of greenhouse gases,” the letter says. “Nations that find innovative ways of decarbonizing energy systems and sequestering CO2 will be the economic leaders of the 21st century. Walking away from Paris makes it less likely that the U.S. will have a global leadership role, politically, economically, or morally. We cannot afford to cross that tipping point.”

Also among the signees is former Harvard biology professor E.O. Wilson, commonly known as the “father of biodiversity,” who earlier this month told The Huffington Post that his “main worry right now is that the Republican candidate might win the election.”

Trump has made his feelings about climate change and environmental protection alarmingly clear. He’s said weather “goes up and it goes down,” and warned that unlike him, Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton wants to “shut down the mines.” Trump’s senior economic adviser, Stephen Moore, said that lifting all restrictions on mining, fracking and drilling is among the ways the GOP candidate plans to pay for his costly proposals.

Although Tuesday’s letter doesn’t mention Trump by name, it is a clear attempt to steer Americans away from casting votes in his favor come November.

“Human-caused climate change is not a belief, a hoax, or a conspiracy. It is a physical reality,” the scientists write. “During the Presidential primary campaign, claims were made that the Earth is not warming, or that warming is due to purely natural causes outside of human control. Such claims are inconsistent with reality.”

Famed astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson didn’t sign the letter, but endorsed it in a statement Tuesday to Mashable.

“For lawmakers to not heed the advice of esteemed scientists on matters of science, in this the 21st century, signals the beginning of the end of an informed democracy,” Tyson told the publication.

7 Things You Need To Know To Tame The Monkey Mind

The monkey mind is something every modern human is familiar with. It’s that incessant thought stream that no matter how hard you try never seems to settle down.

It’s the worries that keep you up at night, the assumptions that cause you grief, the projections you make about the future and the regrets and sentiments you go over from the past.

To tame the monkey mind takes commitment and a deep inner desire for peace. Calming the monkey mind is the first step on the path towards life mastery.

When you consciously realize that your thoughts are energy, and that the energetic implications of what you maintain focus on are actually creating your life to be based in either joy or suffering, you can be empowered to take control over your monkey mind and access the peace of mind that makes sheer existence a true gift.

1. Seek Common Ground and Connection

Division is a distraction from the divine. When you see yourself as a lone wolf, you lose sight of the pack, and you struggle to survive, let alone thrive. Yet when you can look around and feel a connection to all the people you encounter, everything changes.

You start to focus on connection instead of seeing everything as separate. Nothing is separate. The sun in the sky keeps us all alive. The people around you complaining about their mundane daily disturbances are going through the motions just like you are, they’re merely at a different point in their personal evolution.

Instead of focusing on your independence and feeding your loneliness with divisive thought patterns, bring the focus back to finding common ground.

When you do this you shift your entire perspective.

2. Look Deeper Than the Story

Society, the people you surround yourself with, your past experiences and your present belief system all work to strengthen the story you’re narrating in your head all day long. It’s so easy to attach to your story and your thoughts are the glue that binds you there.

If you struggle with self-esteem and that’s a part of your story then without a doubt your thoughts are the roots keeping that belief alive.

When you can remain present and focus on how you feel in each moment you can start to release the constant narration and let go of the belief structures embedded in your story that hold you back from realizing your true potential.

3. Realize YOU Are Not Your Thoughts

Endless thoughts flow through your mind. A thousand thoughts pass through your mind every hour, and you have two options.

The first option is to allow your mind to act like a hose. Thoughts stream in through the top of the funnel and are directed out, they’re let go of, and they flow elsewhere without attachment.

The second option is to allow your mind to act like a filter. Thoughts attempt to pass through the filter but they get trapped. The filter of your mind clings to them for analysis and attachment. The filter gets all clogged up full of thoughts based in what you want and what you don’t want.

When you believe that every thought matters, that every thought that enters your brain is you, and that every thought needs to be examined, you become overburdened, overwhelmed, confused, directionless and prone to overanalyzing. You create internal resistance because you believe on a subconscious level that you are your thoughts.

When you allow your thoughts to show up and pass away without clinging on to them in an attempt to analyze and integrate, you access a freedom that few people embody. You enter into a vibrational state of allowing which is expansive and creates space for you to access the peace and pure joy of being.

4. Let Go of Excuses

I don’t have time. I’m too busy. These are everyone’s favorite excuses for not allowing connection, acceptance, and peace to enter your life on the level of experience.

When you’re ready to let go of the monkey mind and free yourself from the chains that keep you stuck in your head and separated from the world around you, you stop making excuses.

Breaking down the mental constructs that you’ve been attached to and strengthening for your entire life is no easy task, but it is possible and the more excuses you make, the longer it will take to break away from the mental chatter.

5. Develop a Drama Free Mentality

There’s a tendency in our society to become addicted to drama. The boldest example of this is television, you flick on the TV and suddenly you’re immersed in a world wrought with drama.

Breaking the cycle of drama will create more peace in your life, thoughts and relationships. Over time you can consciously train your brain to let go of the things you would normally make a big dramatic deal over.

Your life can be whatever you want it to be, a soap opera or a peaceful expansive existence that plays out moment by moment.

6. Release Judgement

What were they thinking? What’s wrong with them? Why are they doing that?

Judgment creates an inner resistance, a pushing against what is without ever changing what is. When you allow yourself to move into acceptance, even with the things you don’t particularly like, the monkey mind backs down.

The monkey mind thrives on judgment and drama, it’s the fuel that feeds the fire of your thoughts.

When you would normally jump into judgment, whether it’s over someone else’s actions or your own, try to practice allowing things to just be as they are. Allowing isn’t the same as condoning, it’s simply an energetic shift which helps you release attachment and aversion, the monkey mind’s favorite snacks.

7. Practice Awareness

Practice awareness of the thoughts streaming through your mind. You can’t one day wake up and decide to tame the monkey mind without bringing awareness of the thoughts themselves to the forefront. Awareness is the balm that soothes the irritation the monkey mind loves to create.

Awareness is different from attachment because it integrates with the energy of allowing. Thoughts pass by and your awareness shines a light upon them without the incessant desire to unconsciously attach to their meaning.

In every moment you can bring awareness to the forefront of what you’re feeling and thinking. When you notice anger and irritation bubbling up let yourself become consciously aware of these thoughts and your reaction to them and then just let them go.

5 Body Imbalances You Might Unknowingly Experience

By: Cassie Shortsleeve

Technology has improved our lives in many ways, but not without some consequences, including these five common bodily aches. Here’s how to address the pain without pulling the plug.

There’s no doubt that technology has its perks, from allowing us to work from all corners of the earth to meditating via an app at the touch of a finger. But despite the many advantages technology brings us every single day, it also has a downside–one that can be very painful if ignored. Americans suffer from a number of ailments relating to technology, including a type of back and shoulder pain that is now often referred to as “tech neck” (the repeated act of craning your neck forward and down over a screen, resulting in discomfort that can lead to strain and stiffness). The solution, however, isn’t to disconnect and revert back to powerless Pilgrim living. Instead, heed this advice from Sonima.com‘s pain and anatomy advisor, Pete Egoscue: “If an activity is hurting us, take a look at the body. Pain is the body’s way of trying to tell us something.”

Related: Understanding the Source of Back Pain

What is your body saying? It could be hinting at an imbalance. Maybe you’re not vertically loaded properly–meaning your head, shoulders, hips, knees, and ankles aren’t stacking up right. Or perhaps you’re just not bearing weight evenly, says Egoscue, creator of the Egoscue Method for pain-free living.

To find out exactly what your body is telling you, tune in. Once you start paying attention to the subtle signals (usually accompanied by a minor ache), stretch or shift positions to continue enjoying your TV, laptop, smartphone or whatever device is captivating your attention in comfort and with peace of body and mind. Use Egoscue’s guide below to help translate your body’s messages and take appropriate action.

When this hurts: BACK, SHOULDERS, HEAD
Your body may be saying…change the way you sit.
Sitting with your shoulders slumped forward, hip flexors shortened, and back rounded can put extra stress on your lower back, which may curve into a ‘C’ shape instead of its natural ‘S’ shape. This pain doesn’t come from only sitting, but also from being misaligned. Your body is compensating, Egoscue says.
Listen and learn: Look down at your feet. You want them hip-width apart facing forward with toes slightly turned in. Your knees will want to come together, but keep them out, he says. Then pull your shoulders down, relax your abs, and roll up and forward with your hips, putting an arch back into your lower back with your pelvis. In this position, he says, you’re vertically loaded. “That’s the way you sit without effort. Your body has just adapted and adjusted to what you have conditioned it to do.” Sit like this and you could notice back and shoulder pain dissipate and even see improvements in issues, like constipation and digestion, he says.

To learn the four other body imbalances that you might unknowingly experience, continue reading the original article on Sonima.com.

St. Cloud Police Chief William Blair Anderson Shuts Down Fox News Hosts On Live TV

The police chief of St. Cloud, Minnesota, refused to play along when Fox News hosts tried to get him to extend the blame for Saturday’s knife attack to the local Somali immigrant community.

Chief William Blair Anderson was on “Fox & Friends” on Monday to talk about the attack, which left eight people injured, when cohost Steve Doocy tried to tie the incident to Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s call for “extreme vetting” of immigrants.

“Do you share his concern about who is coming into the country?” Doocy asked.

In remarks posted online by Media Matters, the chief replied:

“My job is public safety. It’s not immigration policy. I can tell you that the vast majority of all of our citizens, no matter their ethnicity, are fine, hard-working people, and now is not the time for us to be divisive. We already have a very cohesive community, and I expect that this will draw us even closer together. But at the end of the day, our job is public safety, period.”

Cohost Ainsley Earhardt tried to press the issue, claiming “Minnesota leads the nation” in people leaving the country to join terrorists and asking if Anderson receives cooperation from local imams.

“How do you fight this?” Earhardt asked. “Because it’s a mentality that they’re learning, many of them, behind closed doors.”

Anderson responded:

We actually work very well not just with our East African community, but all of our community. We meet regularly with any number of people, whether they are advocates for a specific ethnicity or different cause. It’s one of things that makes St. Cloud a wonderful place to live, and I know that might sound corny, but it’s the truth. We have established and maintained a very good rapport with our East African community and our community at large.

Also note that the ACRX cards will come to your organization already pre-activated .The cards are good at over 50k stores from Walgreen, Wal mart, Eckerd”s, Kmart, Kroger, Publix, and many more. Any one can use these cards but ACRX is focusing on those who are uninsured, underinsured, or on Medicare. The ACRX cards are now in Spanish as well.

American Consultants Rx made arrangements online for the ACRX card to be available at http://www.acrxcards.com where it can also be downloaded. This arrangement has been made to allow organizations an avenue to continue assisting their clients in the community until they receive their orders of the ACRX cards. 3 Basic Choices To Empower Our Relationships

There are so many things we can all do to improve our existing relationships, regardless of their nature. But if we only applied these 3 Basic Choices To Empower Our Relationships, we would certainly make them more fulfilling for all parties involved.

2016-09-19-1474308214-435847-Couplewithbikes_iStock_70626075_LARGE.jpg

#1 Choose Loyalty
This of course means being there when it matters. But it also means standing up for the relationship by not getting involved in gossip talks with others, about our lover, friend, sibling or whoever that person may be. The loyalty we show when the person is there to see is powerful, but the one we display to others when that person is not there to witness, can make the relationship bullet proof.

#2 Choose To Give
Relationships are, in many instances, like joint bank accounts. The account holders can only withdraw what they’ve put in. And the more they put in, the more “compound interest” they can expect to reap! Contrary to common belief, our main responsibility in a relationship is to give. It’s always easy to question the other “joint account holder’s” behavior, but if we have the relationship at heart, we will seek to give first.

#3 Choose Truthfulness
There’s always a fork in the road in any relationships. One side of the fork seems to commonly offer a wider and smoother path, whereas the other often looks narrower and bumpier. This comes in the form of an event or a situation when we have to choose between the plain truth or… a “twisted” one. As hard as it is to say, we should always choose the truth. When we do, not only does it display that we stand for our word, it also echoes our loyalty and our willingness to continue to give to the relationship.

The endless choices we now have in all areas of life, affect our perceptions. Perceptions like the new “flavor of the month” or the novelty, ought to be better than the “old” one… Or the sense that everything is disposable, because after all, I can always get a new upgraded version of what I have… It brings also the notion of “change,” that we have to look for change at all costs, because if we don’t, we may become obsolete or “passé.”

When it comes to our relationships, we seriously think that we have to be very cautious about the subtle effects of the “endless choices society” we live in. We think it’s time for all of us to make basic choices that will empower the relationships we cherish. The kind of choices that are not new, on the contrary, they are rooted, old fashioned choices, that define who we are, where we come from, and more importantly can remind the other person in the relationship, what we intend to continue to build upon.

Protester With Oxygen Tank Allegedly ‘Cold-Cocked’ By Trump Supporter At N.C. Rally

A woman protesting at a Donald Trump event in North Carolina on Monday night was allegedly assaulted by a supporter of the Republican presidential candidate.

“I said you better learn to speak Russian, and I said the first two words are going to be, ha ha. [The suspect] stopped in his tracks, and he turned around and just cold-cocked me,” Shirley Teter, 69, told the local ABC station WLOS.

Teter has chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and needs an oxygen tank to breathe, the Citizen Times reported. She told the newspaper she was in the hospital until 2 a.m., has pain in her jaw and can’t chew

Authorities have issued a warrant for Richard Campbell, 73, of Edisto Island, South Carolina, in connection with the attack, WLOS reported.

Five other people were also arrested in connection with unruly behavior at Monday night’s rally. In one incident that went viral, a man was caught on video slapping protesters.

“People need to know what state of agitation [Donald Trump] puts people in,” Teter said, per the Citizen Times.

    I’m A Failure!

During my career in Academia, I have noticed an unhealthy trend among students. It’s not drinking or the latest designer drug, but it can be more harmful than both. The trend is the obsessively self-critical thinking that happens when students do something that doesn’t go “right”. They fall into the judgmental trap of thinking they are a failure or something is wrong with them.

We, as a society, are taught from an early age that being hard on ourselves is the only way to make things better… or make us better. We are taught that being self-critical is the driving factor for success.

There is a side effect to this kind of thinking. As students find out that they are not the best in class, or that the projects they created don’t receive the applause they think they deserve, many immediately turn to an obsessive, self-critical way of thinking. They bash themselves and judge themselves negatively. As a result, students become more stressed out, feel insecure, become depressed, and question their own self-worth. If not addressed early on, this kind of thinking can make the college experience a miserable time for any student.

There is a way to fix this kind of thinking, but few talk about it. One of the greatest keys to being successful in life and eliminating obsessive self-criticism is having Mindful Self-Compassion. Yep, that’s right. Compassion for your “self.”

Wait, what? Self-compassion? I know, it sounds somewhat odd to say out loud, but rarely do we consider showing ourselves kindness. We often show friends more caring and compassion than we show ourself. We’ve been trained to be self-critical and self-judgmental. Self-compassion goes against the natural order… or so many think. Some even think that if we are self-compassionate, we are being lazy and complacent.

But research has found that self-criticism only sabotages us and produces a variety of negative consequences. According to Kristin Neff, Ph.D., Associate Professor in human development at the University of Texas at Austin, self-criticism can lead to lowered self-esteem, anxiety and depression. Mindful self-compassion, on the other hand, can lead to greater understanding and peace of mind… and yes, personal and professional success.

So what is “Mindful Self-Compassion”? Actually, it’s quite simple. It can be broken down into three parts.

    1. Mindfulness: Mindfulness is about slowing your mind down to become aware of what you are thinking or doing in the present moment. It involves turning off your autopilot response and noticing what is going on, meaning that you pay attention to your thoughts and feelings without attaching any judgment to them.

Being mindful creates a distance between your thoughts or experiences and your reaction to them. It’s almost like observing your thoughts in the third person. You become aware of your thoughts and just notice what’s going on… you don’t sweep them under the rug and you don’t need to obsess about them either. You become aware, make a nonjudgmental note about the thought, (i.e. “There’s Mr. Negative again”.), tell yourself you’re okay, let the thought go, and return to the present moment.

Being mindful of self-critical thoughts will help you to be more objective about any emotions that may try to hitch a ride.

    2. Self-kindness: Accept that it is okay to be kind, gentle and understanding with yourself when you’re suffering.

It’s easy to be loving and kind to our friends. It’s time you do the same for yourself. If you mess up on a test, don’t beat yourself up. Think about why you did badly, then plan on studying more next time or find a tutor. People don’t think your project or assignment is the best? So what. You are learning, and making mistakes is part of that process. Take the criticism as tips on how to do better next time. Accept that you aren’t going to be perfect… no one is. Frankly, I don’t know anyone who is “perfect”… and those who think they are fall into the “ego-maniac” category. That’s not where you want to be.

    3. Common humanity: Recognize that you are not alone in the self-criticism struggle. We are all struggling. We often think we’re the only ones to make mistakes, feel rejected or fail. Guess what? We all have these experiences; it’s part of being human. We tend not to discuss our struggles, but if you share your experience with others, I bet you’ll find that they have felt the same way at some point. You are not alone. Talking about it may help to negate the power of negative self-talk and criticism.

I know… it’s easier said than done. When you are stuck in a self-criticism rut, try the following mindful self-compassion exercise:

    ▪ Sit somewhere quiet and pay attention to your breath going in and out of your nose or mouth. Notice how your breath feels as it enters and exits. Stay focused on this for a couple of minutes and then repeat to yourself, “May I be kind to myself, may I know that I am a good person, may I be at peace, may I know that all is well.” Do this for two or more minutes when you feel the negative thoughts creeping in.

This exercise will slow down your thoughts, help train your mind to let go of negative self-talk, and accept that you are okay. For more exercises on gaining mindful self-compassion for yourself, check out the meditations here:

A couple notes for the nay-sayers:

    1. Self-compassion is not self-pitying.
Self-pity is being obsessed and immersed in your own problems and forgetting that others struggle, too. Self-compassion is much different. Being self-compassionate is seeing things as they are –while not giving critical self-talk power. Self-compassion focuses on alleviating suffering while self-pity leaves you rolling in self-loathing.

    2. Self-criticism is not an effective motivator.
Challenging yourself, recognizing weaknesses and growing from them are productive. However, there’s actually nothing productive or motivating about criticizing yourself. When you criticize yourself you are creating fear of failure and you may wind up losing faith in yourself. Even if you do achieve great things, you’re often miserable because you live in a world of self-loathing and criticism. That doesn’t sound like a very happy world.

I wish you the best. Be kind to yourself!

5 Ways To Raise A Saver, Not A Spender

You may not have much influence over your kids’ athletic interests or their questionable fashion choices, but you just so happen to be in the perfect position to shape their money habits. Sure, kindergartners don’t need to know the ins and outs of loans and interest rates just yet, but at this age is the perfect time to instill a healthy outlook on saving that will last a lifetime.

Instilling strong financial values in your children will not only help them thrive as adults, it’s good for the economy they’ll eventually inherit. In June the Federal Reserve released alarming data that Americans owe more than $ 9.7 billion in revolving credit card debt, pointing to a widespread pattern of overspending;  it’s more important than ever to make sure your family doesn’t fall into the debt trap.

So how can you make sure your child is a saver rather than a spender? In partnership with the BuyPower Card from Capital One, we’re bringing you five smart ways to instill healthy financial habits in your children early on. When they have their own bills to pay, they just might look back and thank you.

Raising kids with smart financial habits will pay off big time over the years. The BuyPower Card from Capital One will pay off big time, too, by rewarding users with Earnings on every purchase. With no limit and no expiration, Earnings are redeemable towards a new Chevrolet, Buick, GMC or Cadillac vehicle.

Exposes and Excess: Muckraking in America, 1900/2000

Exposes and Excess: Muckraking in America, 1900/2000

From robber barons to titanic CEOs, from the labor unrest of the 1880s to the mass layoffs of the 1990s, two American Gilded Ages–one in the early 1900s, another in the final years of the twentieth century–mirror each other in their laissez-faire excess and rampant social crises. Both eras have ignited the civic passions of investigative writers who have drafted diagnostic blueprints for urgently needed change. The compelling narratives of the muckrakers–Upton Sinclair, Ida Tarbell, Lincoln Steffens, and Ray Stannard Baker among them–became best-sellers and prize-winners a hundred years ago; today, Cecelia Tichi notes, they have found their worthy successors in writers such as Barbara Ehrenreich, Eric Schlosser, and Naomi Klein. In Exposes and Excess Tichi explores the two Gilded Ages through the lens of their muckrakers. Drawing from her considerable and wide-ranging work in American studies, Tichi details how the writers of the first muckraking generation used fact-based narratives in magazines such as McClure’s to rouse the U.S. public to civic action in an era of unbridled industrial capitalism and fear of the barbarous immigrant "dangerous classes." Offering a damning cultural analysis of the new Gilded Age, Tichi depicts a booming, insecure, fortress America of bulked up baby strollers, McMansion housing, and an obsession with money-as-lifeline in an era of deregulation, yawning income gaps, and idolatry of the market and its rock-star CEOs. No one has captured this period of corrosive boom more acutely than the group of nonfiction writers who burst on the scene in the late 1990s with their exposes of the fast-food industry, the world of low-wage work, inadequate health care, corporate branding, and the multi-billion-dollar prison industry. And nowhere have these authors–Ehrenreich, Schlosser, Klein, Laurie Garrett, and Joseph Hallinan–revealed more about their emergence as writers and the connections between journalism and literary narrative than in the rich and insightful interviews that round out the book. With passion and wit, Exposes and Excess brings a literary genre up to date at a moment when America has gone back to the future.

We find out Hillary Clinton is Actually a Superwoman

Well we finally know about Hillary’s health and we find out like so many other women she’s super human. On Friday we saw Hillary at a meeting with advisers on national security after which she held a detailed press conference. Following that she did an interview with Chris Cuomo. That same evening she first attended a reception and took pictures with about 100 individuals all who wanted a word or two with her. She then went out and gave a great speech to about 1000 people.

    2016-09-12-1473652385-704985-HillaryBday2.jpg

Today after standing in 80 degree heat and humidity for an hour and a half, meeting with the families of the victims of 9/11, she left feeling ill and faint and stopped at her daughter’s apartment to cool off and relax. Then she leaves her daughter’s apartment and stops to chat with a little girl and wave to well-wishers saying she felt much better.

The media goes wild with speculation before we find out on Friday, in the middle of that crazy schedule, Hillary had been diagnosed with pneumonia. You show me one man who would be able to do what she has done keeping to that incredible schedule. Most men I know when they get the sniffles take to their beds wanting to be waited on hand and foot.

It’s time the media stopped this double standard and treated Clinton’s campaign as they would anyone else’s. She is human after all. All the health information we ever got from Donald Trump was what sounded like a phony doctor’s note of the kind a teenager could forge to take to their teacher to get out of doing something. Kind of makes sense as Trump usually sounds like a nasty teenager when he isn’t making statements making him sound to the world more like Hitler or Mussolini.

Hillary Clinton has released 33 years of her and her husband’s taxes, Trump has yet to release any. We have no idea what Russian banks or oligarchs he owes money too. The media reports on the Clinton Foundation which has done nothing wrong while the Trump Foundation has been fined for lying and misusing funds. The media demands the Clinton’s separate from their Foundation but hasn’t even asked what Trump will do about his businesses of which we aren’t even sure what they are since he is being secretive about them.

The time is now for the American people to stand up and demand the media stop babying Trump. He is not running for City Council he is running to be President of the United States and the leader of the free world.

We are heading into the final 58 days of the campaign. Matt Lauer who in a recent turn as moderator proved he isn’t really a journalist only joined a whole slew of others who claim they are journalists yet are failing the test in this campaign.

If Trump should win without the American public knowing any more about him than we do now the media will be held responsible. All we know now because the media hasn’t done their job is the crap he spouts which proves he is a sexist, racist, xenophobic, homophobic, bully. They don’t bother to call him on his daily lies and let his surrogates spout a pile of BS without calling them on anything.

After the Lauer fiasco the New York Times finally editorialized on this but they are as guilty as anyone else of sloppy reporting on this campaign. It is time the media take a look in the mirror and accept they haven’t been doing their jobs and come to grips with the fact that if they don’t start now it may be too late.

    How To Crush Your Goals

    2016-09-08-1473372986-5893749-HowToExceedYourGoalsIn2016HP.jpg

For many of us, 2016 began with a promise — a promise that this year we will accomplish that which has eluded us. Often it’s the everyday things that prove most difficult — managing your schedule, treating people the way you ought to, and keeping things in perspective when chaos is at hand.

There are two reasons why we’re so bad at reaching our goals:

The first is that we bite off more than we can chew. It may seem reasonable to pick up three or four new skills to add to your repertoire, but that’s an expectation the mind can’t execute. When we try to develop too many new skills at once, they become competing priorities that leave us distracted, discouraged and overwhelmed.

The second reason most self-improvement efforts are doomed to fail is that our emotions have a nasty habit of hijacking our behavior. Without a strong ability to recognize and manage our emotions as they occur, old habits are sure to die hard.

    The Good News

The good news is that you can address both problems and make the changes you desire by resolving this year to develop a single skill — emotional intelligence (EQ).

Piles of research over the last two decades has shown that emotional intelligence is likely the single most powerful success factor yet discovered, affecting everything from your performance at work, to your mood and the quality of your personal life.

We’ve tested emotional intelligence alongside 33 other critical skills and found that it subsumes the majority of them. It’s no wonder that 90% of top performers are high in EQ and people with high EQs make $ 28,000 more annually than their low EQ counterparts.

But how does emotional intelligence play such a large role in so many important skills? Our brains are wired such that emotions are the root of all human behavior. Whether we’re aware of it or not, the motivation behind every action (no matter how small) is inherently emotional.

    Here’s how it works:

All of your primary senses enter at the base of your brain (the light blue shaded area below). Before you can think rationally about what you’re experiencing, these signals must travel through the limbic system — the place where emotions are generated. This ensures you have an emotional reaction to events first.

    2016-09-08-1473373081-6427119-HowToExceedYourGoalsIn2016HP2.jpg

Emotional intelligence ensures effective communication between the rational and emotional centers of your brain. As you improve your emotional intelligence, you improve your ability to understand and control the primary motivations for your behavior, which reaps dividends in everything you do every day. Emotional intelligence is powerful and efficient — it allows you to focus your energy on a single skill with tremendous results.

What Does Emotional Intelligence Look Like?

Emotional intelligence is the “something” in each of us that is a bit intangible. It affects how we manage behavior, navigate social complexities, and make personal decisions that achieve positive results. Emotional intelligence is made up of four core skills that pair up under two primary competencies: personal competence and social competence.

    2016-09-08-1473373131-6222603-HowToExceedYourGoalsIn2016HP3.jpg

Personal competence comprises your self-awareness and self-management skills, which focus more on you individually than on your interactions with other people. Personal competence is your ability to stay aware of your emotions and manage your behavior and tendencies.

    • Self-Awareness is your ability to accurately perceive your emotions and stay aware of them as they happen.
    • Self-Management is your ability to use awareness of your emotions to stay flexible and positively direct your behavior.

Social Competence is made up of your social awareness and relationship management skills; social competence is your ability to understand other people’s moods, behavior, and motives in order to respond effectively and improve the quality of your relationships.

    • Social Awareness is your ability to accurately pick up on emotions in other people and understand what is really going on.
    • Relationship Management is your ability to use awareness of your emotions and the others’ emotions to manage interactions successfully.

While working on your emotional intelligence (you can take an emotional intelligence test to measure your progress) will improve a lot of different skills, there are five in particular that people tend to set goals around when the year changes. I’ll explain how you can improve each of these skills solely by focusing on your emotional intelligence.

    Time Management

In this age of abundance, time is the one thing nobody has enough of. Perhaps that’s why Google receives 111 million searches a month for Time Management. Few people recognize how time management depends upon the emotional intelligence skills of self-management and relationship management.

Creating a good schedule is a very rational thing, but sticking to that schedule is decidedly emotional. Many of us start out every day with the best intentions to manage our time wisely. But then we receive a complicated email from a co-worker, a consuming phone call from a friend, or otherwise get sidetracked until our well-laid plans go up in flames. We spend the rest of the day trying to put out somebody else’s fire, or working to resolve issues that weren’t there in the morning. Before you know it, the day is gone and you’re completely off schedule.

When the distractions are your own, sticking to a schedule requires self-management. When the needs of others try to impede upon your plans, it takes effective relationship management to finesse the relationship while ensuring that your priorities are still addressed.

    Embracing Change

Show me somebody who claims to love change, and I’ll show you a well-intentioned liar. Change is uncomfortable for everyone at times, and for many of us it makes our skin crawl. Those who apply well-honed self-awareness and self-management skills tolerate change much more successfully than others. Self-awareness enables you to adjust comfortably to change because it gives you the perspective needed to realize when change is coming and how it’s affecting you.

Self-management keeps you cool in the moment — often with a reminder that even the most stable, trusted facets of your life are not completely under your control. Those most averse to change, who possess great self-awareness and self-management skills, even set aside a small amount of time each week to list possible changes and what actions they can take in response.

    Assertiveness

Emotional intelligence is commonly mistaken as a synonym for “nice.” In fact, the most emotionally intelligent response is often one where you openly and directly express yourself. To paraphrase Aristotle, getting angry is easy. Getting angry with the right person, at the right time, and to the right degree requires emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence doesn’t allow lashing out, or making yourself into someone else’s doormat. To be assertive, you have to know what you’re feeling, read the other party accurately, and express yourself in a way that garners the best result. People with high EQs do this naturally.

    Making Great Decisions

It has taken the world far too long to wake up to the fact that emotions simply cannot — and should not — be ignored when making decisions. Neuroscience shows us that sometimes the most rational thing you can do is trust your emotions when making a decision. But in order to make this work, you have to be aware of the emotions you’re feeling, know why you’re having them, and see how they factor into the situation at hand. Here, there is no substitute for emotional intelligence.

    Giving Outstanding Presentations

Few things strike primal fear in people like standing under the spotlight in a room full of people. Even the most eloquent among us can be reduced to spewing verbal garbage once the sheer anxiety of public speaking takes hold. That’s why a knock-’em-dead presenter’s most inspiring presentation is often the one he delivers to himself. A bit of positive self-talk — reminding himself of all the times he has succeeded and how qualified he is to speak on the topic — enables the effective speaker to use his performance anxiety to sharpen his focus and make him more articulate. If you think that’s silly, then you probably haven’t tried it. Emotional intelligence doesn’t just make you aware of your emotions; it equips you with strategies for keeping them from holding you back.

    Bringing It All Together

Give improving your emotional intelligence a real shot. You’ll be surprised where it takes you.

How will you reach your goals this year? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.

NFL To Investigate Cam Newton’s Head Hits During Broncos Game

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton absorbed multiple hits to the head in the season-opening loss at Denver, and Broncos’ players said in the aftermath of Thursday’s game that hitting the reigning MVP was key to the game plan.

Newton’s father, Cecil, said the family was “grossly disturbed” by the repeated shots to his son.

Now the NFL and NFL Players Association are investigating the response by medical personnel during the game.

One specific hit ― helmet-to-helmet contact initiated by Broncos safety Darian Stewart ― prompted the compliance investigation.

“The NFL is committed to the proper application of the concussion protocol,” the league spokesman said in a statement.

“In order to ensure that it is being uniformly applied across all 32 NFL teams, we have decided to initiate a review of the medical team’s response to the Cam Newton tackle, under the procedure set forth by the collective bargaining agreement,” NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said in a statement.

“Under that procedure, representatives from the league and the players association will review the relevant documents and video and interview the involved parties to ensure that the protocol was applied properly. It is important to note that initiation of this process does not mean that we have seen any evidence that the protocol was applied improperly, but simply reflects our obligation to ensure the health and safety of our players.”

The NFL safety advisory committee panel meets once a month and will discuss at the upcoming meeting whether to consider adopting college targeting penalty rules, which carry automatic ejection and a one-game suspension.

“”Artist Kirkman and writer Scott obviously know about parenting. You can see it in every installment of the true-to-life strip they create.”” -Cartoon Opportunities Life’s not getting any simpler around the MacPherson household with Zoe starting preschool, Hammie approaching toddlerhood and parents Darryl and Wanda just trying to keep up. Since 1990, the daily comic strip Baby Blues has delighted readers with its fresh prospective on the nature of parenting, earning it 1995’s Best Comic Strip Award from the National Cartoonists Society. Scenes such as Zoe’s disarmingly honest response to a complimentary stranger in the grocery store-“”I think you have a really fat bottom””-strike an all-too-familiar chord with anyone who knows a child. And what parent wouldn’t recognize the truth in the fact that it took only five seconds for Darryl and Wanda to move all of their valuable possessions (one framed photo) out of Hammie’s growing reach?Baby Blues creators Rick Kirkman and Jerry Scott receive countless letters and e-mails from fans who describe their heartfelt connection to the MacPhersons. Winter Blues: Seasonal Affective Disorder: What It Is and How to Overcome It

Winter Blues: Seasonal Affective Disorder: What It Is and How to Overcome It

When days get shorter and colder, do you get gloomier? Do you have trouble waking up? Controlling your diet? Focusing on work and relationships? If so, you may be one of the millions of people who suffer from seasonal affective disorder (SAD): changes in mood and behavior due to seasonal changes, such as feeling depressed in winter. Rosenthal, senior researcher at the National Institutes of Health and clinical professor of psychiatry at Georgetown University, led the team that first described SAD. Now in his revised and updated Winter Blues, he describes SAD and how to overcome it. The book includes a self-diagnosis to see how severely seasonal changes affect you (or your child). Rosenthal, author of St. John’s Wort: The Herbal Way to Feeling Good, brings SAD to life with profiles of seasonal-slump sufferers. All of these people experienced dramatic improvement with light therapy–exposure to a special light box for 30 to 90 minutes a day. Winter Blues tells you everything you need to know about light boxes and other treatments, such as psychotherapy, antidepressant medications, herbs, vitamins, and the role of diet and exercise. Rosenthal includes many helpful extras, such as tips for dealing with the holidays and a sample letter requesting insurance reimbursement for a light box. –Joan Price

Rick Perry To Join ‘Dancing With The Stars’

Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry will join the next season of the popular reality television show “Dancing With the Stars,” Entertainment Tonight reported Monday.

Perry, 66, a Republican presidential candidate in 2012 and 2016, will join the show’s 23d season this fall alongside rapper Vanilla Ice, retired Detroit Lions football player Calvin Johnson, Indy race car driver James Hinchcliffe, and U.S. Olympians Laurie Hernandez and Ryan Lochte.

The full lineup ― as well as the show’s dance partners ― will be revealed Tuesday on ABC’s “Good Morning America,” according to Entertainment Tonight. “Dancing With the Stars” premieres Sept. 12. The show matches celebrities with professional dancers for competitions.

Perry is not the first politician from Texas to boogie down on the show. Former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, who resigned from Congress after being indicted for money laundering, participated in the show’s ninth season in 2009. He withdrew due to stress fractures in both feet. DeLay was convicted in 2010, but a Texas appeals court overturned the ruling.

    Mindful Dating III

The dynamics we have with our primary caregivers when we are young have a tremendous influence on our dating choices later in life.

In all of my workshops I teach a section on Attachment Theory. John Bowlby and Mary Ainsworth theorized that people develop either secure or insecure attachment styles very early in life. Many people in our culture exhibit one of three types of insecure attachment styles:

    1. Fearful/avoidant
    2. Anxious
    3. Disorganized

We must be cognizant of the dynamics that we have with each of our parents because those manifest later as attachment styles. For example, if our fathers or mothers were aloof and emotionally withholding, we should not be surprised if we are attracted to partners who turn out to be aloof and withholding.

There is a part of us that becomes what we loved and admired as children, and there is a part of us that becomes what we hated and despised as children.

Specifically, I have found that the wounded child in all of us feels betrayed because all he or she wanted was to be loved UNCONDITIONALLY and grew up in a society that primarily provided tools to gain love CONDITIONALLY – because we received good grades, behaved correctly, looked good, were good athletes, spoke well, earned money, were talented, etc.  This creates much resentment because even as children felt as if we were constantly “seducing” people into liking us. However the tools we learned to use to seduce people into liking us often are not the right tools for procuring the type of love that our hearts really yearn for later in life – they are more apt for procuring admiration.

Let me ask you: would you rather be admired or loved?

In an effort to individuate, sometimes we date people who are the exact opposite of one of our parents. Rebellion is an essential part of the individuation process – but it can also be inauthentic if it is only moving away from something rather than also moving towards something.

I believe that babies individuate the first time they see themselves in a mirror (as a “self” distinct from their mothers), then again when they go to pre-school or school for the first time but are still living in their parents’ homes; then again when if they go off to college away from home but have their parents still paying to support them; then again when they live away from their parents and learn how to support themselves as adults.  There is a tension between having to obey and depend on your parents and wanting to be your own person.  Note the spate of young people in the last 35-40 years who got tattoos early in life; this is a subconscious declaration, “I own my body and nobody can tell me what to do with it anymore (even if you’re still paying my rent).”

We are living in fascinatingly complex and often confusing times regarding gender roles, the ways we expect men and women to act.  We all agree that women should be paid equal salaries as men, yet many women still think that men should pay for meals as subconscious symbols of being providers and protectors.  There is a tension between wanting to be independent and wanting to be taken care of.

We have lived in a society that objectified women as sexy secretaries, waitresses, librarians, bank-tellers, store-clerks, nurses, etc. That archetype of the damsel in distress needing to be “saved” or taken care of – thankfully! – is dying.  But how do we move into the next paradigm of compassion, respect, equality and love?

One way is through conscious loving and authentic communications.  This is when we are mindfully aware of our wounds and how we learned to compensate for them as children. Usually there is some level of inauthenticity regarding these “assets.”  We must be aware of how we learned to seduce people into liking our “false selves” or personas and be brave enough to be authentic and vulnerable (which can be quite scary). And the first thing you need is a loving non-judgmental relationship with someone who is empathetic, loving and accepting of the whole you, not just the glitzy exteriors that we tend to choose to show the world – particularly the way we present our lives on the Internet.

    Understanding Baker’s Cyst

    Baker’s Cyst
A Baker’s cyst, also known as a popliteal cyst, is benign swelling found behind the knee that lies posterior to the medial femoral condyle.

    2016-08-29-1472494424-9193140-BakersCyst3.PNG

The cyst is connected to the knee joint through a valvular opening.

    2016-08-29-1472494452-9344980-BakersCyst4.PNG

Knee effusion (fluid on the knee) from intra-articular pathology or a meniscal tear, allows the fluid to go through the valve to the cyst in one direction. The cyst is located between the semimembranosus and medial gastrocnemius muscles, in the back of the knee.

    2016-08-29-1472494490-1860893-BakersCyst6.PNG

    Diagnosis
The patient usually has swelling behind the knee with pain, fullness, and tenderness. A baker’s cyst is easier to see with the knee fully extended. Diagnosis is confirmed by an MRI that will show the associated intra-articular pathology, usually a meniscal tear. An ultrasound may also be helpful. These tests are important, especially if the cyst is found to be outside of its typical position.

    2016-08-29-1472494536-2992088-BakersCyst8.PNG

    Causes
The two most common causes of Baker’s cysts are knee arthritis and meniscal tears.

    Treatment
Treatment of painful, large cysts may include ice, compression wrapping, corticosteroid medication, strengthening exercises, aspiration of the cyst and/or excision of the cyst. Recurrence of Baker’s cysts is common if the intra-articular pathology is not corrected. The best treatment for a Baker’s cyst is arthroscopy and debridement of the intra-articular pathology.

    2016-08-29-1472494583-993019-BakersCyst5.PNG

The cysts may burst causing calf pain and swelling. An examiner should rule out deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or thrombophlebitis.

    Popliteal Cysts in Children
A popliteal cyst in children occurs as a soft tissue mass at the back of the knee. This type of cyst will occur more often in young boys than girls. They are asymptomatic and transilluminate. They are not considered a tumor. Popliteal cysts in children are treated by observation without surgery. They are not associated with a meniscal tear.

Exposes and Excess: Muckraking in America, 1900/2000

Exposes and Excess: Muckraking in America, 1900/2000

From robber barons to titanic CEOs, from the labor unrest of the 1880s to the mass layoffs of the 1990s, two American Gilded Ages-one in the early 1900s, another in the final years of the twentieth century-mirror each other in their laissez-faire excess and rampant social crises. Both eras have ignited the civic passions of investigative writers who have drafted diagnostic blueprints for urgently needed change. The compelling narratives of the muckrakers-Upton Sinclair, Ida Tarbell, Lincoln Steffens, and Ray Stannard Baker among them-became bestsellers and prizewinners a hundred years ago; today, Cecelia Tichi notes, they have found their worthy successors in writers such as Barbara Ehrenreich, Eric Schlosser, and Naomi Klein. In "Exposes and Excess" Tichi explores the two Gilded Ages through the lens of their muckrakers. Drawing from her considerable and wide-ranging work in American studies, Tichi details how the writers of the first muckraking generation used fact-based narratives in magazines such as "McClure’s" to rouse the U.S. public to civic action in an era of unbridled industrial capitalism and fear of the immigrant "dangerous classes." Offering a damning cultural analysis of the new Gilded Age, Tichi depicts a booming, insecure, fortress America of bulked-up baby strollers, McMansion housing, and an obsession with money-as-lifeline in an era of deregulation, yawning income gaps, and idolatry of the market and its rock-star CEOs. No one has captured this period of corrosive boom more acutely than the group of nonfiction writers who burst on the scene in the late 1990s with their exposes of the fast-food industry, the world of low-wage work, inadequate health care, corporate branding, and the multibillion-dollar prison industry. And nowhere have these authors-Ehrenreich, Schlosser, Klein, Laurie Garrett, and Joseph Hallinan-revealed more about their emergence as writers and the connections between journalism and literary narrative than in the rich and insightful interviews that round out the book. With passion and wit, "Exposes and Excess" brings a literary genre up to date at a moment when America has gone back to the future.

Do Millennials Have a Bro Problem?

The title of this post is already going to get me in trouble–anyone who tries to speak of “millennials” as an homogenous population is already engaging in a ridiculous level of reductionism. So let’s posit at the outset that the phenomena I am about to describe apply to some not-very-clearly defined sub-set of this not-very-clearly-defined generational cohort.

Now let’s talk about two polls that came out in the past few weeks. The first one got a flurry of attention. This was the Pew Research poll that asked respondents to choose between one of two propositions: “Significant obstacles still make it harder for women to get ahead than men” or “Obstacles that made it harder for women to get ahead are largely gone”. This was a poll carried out by a highly reputable agency with a large and scientifically selected sample (N>2300). The results were startling, and not for the reasons one might expect. 56% of men and 34% of women overall chose the “largely gone” answer. Among self-described Republicans these numbers were 75% of men and 50% of women, among self-described Democrats the numbers were 39% and 23% respectively. Nothing too startling there.

But then the researchers reported a further breakdown by age cohort. Here’s where things get weird. Among Democratic-leaning men ages 35-49, 34% chose the “largely gone” answer. Among Democratic-leaning men ages 18-34 – in other words, Millenials – 52% chose the “largely gone” response.

That result is semi-astonishing. The researchers hypothesized that the results reflect lack of life experience: thus as men and women get older and spend more time in the workplace, they observe more examples of obstacles to women’s advancement. It’s a perfectly plausible partial explanation and it is consistent with the rest of the results that showed for both men and women and across party affiliations older respondents were more likely than the youngest group to select the “significant obstacles” answer. So there’s that. It is also possible that there is a certain defensiveness involved (“if I got that promotion it’s because I deserved it more than she did”)which declines when one is less actively competing for advancement.

The problem with either of those explanations is that they imply that the only source of perceptions about sexism or presumably a broad range of other social phenomena is personal experience. Peer interactions, social media, news stories, movies and TV programs, education … none of these have any influence at all on perceptions of societal sexism? Or is it that these are the elements preventing that recognition, that are only overcome by long exposure to the harsh realities of life on the ground?

Then there’s another poll that deserves discussion. This one was privately commissioned by Pershing LLC and carried out by Harris. Again, this was a poll with a large sample (N>2000) conducted by a highly reputable polling agency. The purpose of the poll was to study attitudes toward leadership in business. The results were interesting: across the board, respondents indicated a preference for styles of leadership that in earlier eras might have been coded “feminine”. Leaders should be good listeners, take advice, work collaboratively, be sensitive to the feelings and needs of those around them, etc. And 77% of respondents identified these as characteristics associated with women.

Then the survey asked another set of questions. Respondents were asked whether they were “comfortable” with the idea of women in various positions of authority. Among 18-34 year old men, for example, 79% said they comfortable with women as teachers. But only 43% of men ages 18-34 were comfortable with women as U.S. Senators (43%). And even smaller numbers of Millennial men were comfortable with the idea of women as Fortune 500 executives (39%), President of the United States (35%), or engineers (34%).

The President response has obvious political implications. Senators is strange given that there are no fewer than 20 women in the Senate right now (there have been 46 throughout our history). But … engineers? Two thirds of Millennial men responding to this survey were not willing to say they were comfortable with the idea of women as engineers?? Keep in mind that these are the same people who previously stated a preference for leadership attributes that they, themselves, associate with women.

Once again, let me acknowledge that it is wrong to speak of Millennial men as an homogenous category. (I showed these two studies to one Millennial man I know; his response was “I hate my species.” Which I thought was a little strong, but certainly made his feelings clear.) And analyzing the sources and consequences of these attitudes goes way beyond this blog post. But I think there exists at least a segment of the Millennial generation who can be described as having a bro problem.

11 Habits of Ridiculously Likeable People

    2016-08-25-1472165418-1528300-11HabitsofRidiculouslyLikeablePeopleHP.jpg

Too many people succumb to the mistaken belief that being likeable comes from natural, unteachable traits that belong only to a lucky few–the good looking, the fiercely social, and the incredibly talented. It’s easy to fall prey to this misconception.

When I speak to smaller audiences, I often ask them to describe the most likeable people they have ever worked with. People inevitably ignore innate characteristics (intelligence, extraversion, attractiveness, and so on) and instead focus on qualities that are completely under people’s control, such as approachability, humility, and positivity.

These qualities, and others like them, describe people who are skilled in emotional intelligence (EQ). TalentSmart research data from more than a million people shows that people who possess these skills aren’t just highly likeable, they outperform those who don’t by a large margin. Ninety percent of top performers have high EQs, people with high EQs make $ 29,000 more annually than people with low EQs, and a single-point increase in your EQ adds $ 1,300 to your salary. I could go on and on.

Being likeable is under your control, and it’s a matter of emotional intelligence. Unlike innate, fixed characteristics, such as your intelligence (IQ), EQ is a flexible skill that you can improve with effort.

To help you improve your EQ, I did some digging to uncover the key behaviors that emotionally intelligent people engage in that make them so likeable.

    1. They are genuine. Being genuine and honest is essential to being likeable. No one likes a fake. People gravitate toward those who are genuine because they know they can trust them. It is difficult to like someone when you don’t know who they really are and how they really feel.

Likeable people know who they are. They are confident enough to be comfortable in their own skin. By concentrating on what drives you and makes you happy as an individual, you become a much more interesting person than if you attempt to win people over by making choices that you think will make them like you.

    2. They ask thoughtful questions. The biggest mistake people make when it comes to listening is they’re so focused on what they’re going to say next or how what the other person is saying is going to affect them that they fail to hear what’s being said. The words come through loud and clear, but the meaning is lost. A simple way to avoid this is to ask a lot of questions. People like to know you’re listening, and something as simple as a clarification question shows that not only are you listening, you also care about what they’re saying. You’ll be surprised how much respect and appreciation you gain just by asking questions.

    3. They don’t pass judgment. If you want to be likeable you must be open-minded. Being open-minded makes you approachable and interesting to others. No one wants to have a conversation with someone who has already formed an opinion and is not willing to listen.

Having an open mind is crucial in the workplace where approachability means access to new ideas and help. To eliminate preconceived notions and judgment, you need to see the world through other people’s eyes. This doesn’t require you believe what they believe or condone their behavior, it simply means you quit passing judgment long enough to truly understand what makes them tick. Only then can you let them be who they are.

    4. They don’t seek attention. People are averse to those who are desperate for attention. You don’t need to develop a big, extroverted personality to be likeable. Simply being friendly and considerate is all you need to win people over. When you speak in a friendly, confident, and concise manner, you will notice that people are much more attentive and persuadable than if you try to show them you’re important. People catch on to your attitude quickly and are more attracted to the right attitude than what–or how many people–you know.

When you’re being given attention, such as when you’re being recognized for an accomplishment, shift the focus to all the people who worked hard to help you get there. This may sound cliché, but if it’s genuine, the fact that you pay attention to others and appreciate their help will show that you’re appreciative and humble–two adjectives that are closely tied to likeability.

    5. They are consistent. Few things make you more unlikeable than when you’re all over the place. When people approach you, they like to know whom they’re dealing with and what sort of response they can expect. To be consistent you must be reliable, and you must ensure that even when your mood goes up and down it doesn’t affect how you treat other people.

    6. They use positive body language. Becoming cognizant of your gestures, expressions, and tone of voice (and making certain they’re positive) will draw people to you like ants to a picnic. Using an enthusiastic tone, uncrossing your arms, maintaining eye contact, and leaning towards the person who’s speaking are all forms of positive body language that high-EQ people use to draw others in. Positive body language can make all the difference in a conversation.

It’s true that how you say something can be more important than what you say.

    7. They leave a strong first impression.
Research shows most people decide whether or not they like you within the first seven seconds of meeting you. They then spend the rest of the conversation internally justifying their initial reaction. This may sound terrifying, but by knowing this you can take advantage of it to make huge gains in your likeability. First impressions are tied intimately to positive body language. Strong posture, a firm handshake, smiling, and opening your shoulders to the person you are talking to will help ensure that your first impression is a good one.

    8. They greet people by name. Your name is an essential part of your identity, and it feels terrific when people use it. Likeable people make certain they use others’ names every time they see them. You shouldn’t use someone’s name only when you greet him. Research shows that people feel validated when the person they’re speaking with refers to them by name during a conversation.

If you’re great with faces but have trouble with names, have some fun with it and make remembering people’s names a brain exercise. When you meet someone, don’t be afraid to ask her name a second time if you forget it right after you hear it. You’ll need to keep her name handy if you’re going to remember it the next time you see her.

    9. They smile. People naturally (and unconsciously) mirror the body language of the person they’re talking to. If you want people to like you, smile at them during a conversation and they will unconsciously return the favor and feel good as a result.

    10. They know who to touch (and they touch them). When you touch someone during a conversation, you release oxytocin in their brain, a neurotransmitter that makes their brain associate you with trust and a slew of other positive feelings. A simple touch on the shoulder, a hug, or a friendly handshake is all it takes to release oxytocin. Of course, you have to touch the right person in the right way to release oxytocin, as unwanted or inappropriate touching has the opposite effect. Just remember, relationships are built not just from words, but also from general feelings about each other. Touching someone appropriately is a great way to show you care.

    11. They balance passion and fun. People gravitate toward those who are passionate. That said, it’s easy for passionate people to come across as too serious or uninterested because they tend to get absorbed in their work. Likeable people balance their passion with the ability to have fun. At work they are serious, yet friendly. They still get things done because they are socially effective in short amounts of time and they capitalize on valuable social moments. They minimize small talk and gossip and instead focus on having meaningful interactions with their coworkers. They remember what you said to them yesterday or last week, which shows that you’re just as important to them as their work.

    Bringing It All Together

Likeable people are invaluable and unique. They network with ease, promote harmony in the workplace, bring out the best in everyone around them, and generally seem to have the most fun. Add these skills to your repertoire and watch your likeability soar!

For Presidential Candidates, 70 is the new 45

by Dr. Mehmet Oz & Dr. Michael Roizen

Controversy blossomed this week surrounding the health of our presidential candidates. That’s because we’re heading into this fall’s presidential election knowing relatively little about the medical history of either major-party candidate, and at 68 and 70, respectively, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump would be among the oldest people ever elected to the office of the president. Ronald Reagan, the oldest so far, was 69 when he was elected to his first term, 73 for his second term, and 77 when he left office. Only 10 of our 43 presidents entered office older than 60.

For many of us, the health of the president is an important issue when casting our ballots. While we don’t and shouldn’t take someone’s age or health into consideration when hiring for a typical job, the role of the president is an extraordinary position. Health is also one of our nation’s most important issues, and a healthy president sets a better example for us all to follow.

Some say that in this election, the health of the candidates is even more important than ever, because of their chronological age. We understand this concern, because aging can definitely affect stamina and mental quickness. On average, we (kidneys, liver, heart, even bone mass, and brain functioning) decline 5 percent every 10 years. So by age 70, your IQ is, on average, 20% lower than at age 30. In addition, we have examined the medical records of all of the presidents since Teddy Roosevelt and found that after someone gets into the Oval Office, they age two years for every one year on the job.

But while the calendar age of Secretary Clinton and Donald Trump would traditionally qualify them as elderly, today we also know that a president’s real age is more important than his/her chronological age. Your real age is determined by your habits and environment. For those who engage in the healthiest habits and are in the healthiest environments, 70 truly is the new 45. As a result of improvements in public health and medicine, all Americans, on average, live much longer than when we elected our first president 227 years ago. Over just the last 100 years, average life expectancy has increased more than 20 years, from around 55 in 1916 to nearly 79 today.

These life expectancy numbers are typically based on averages, but no matter your political preference, everyone can surely agree that our presidential candidates are far from average in many ways. We know that social determinants, such as educational level and income, are among the most important factors for longevity. The more education you have, where you live, and your job correlate with how long you live and how healthy you are. According to research, women and men with 16 or more years of education (Secretary Clinton has 19 and Mr. Trump has 16) are expected to have an increase in life span as much as 8 and 13 years respectively. In addition, those in the highest income brackets (again, this includes both candidates) have been estimated to have a life expectancy about 14.6 years longer than those in the lowest income brackets. These social advantages suggest that both candidates are likely to have a longer life expectancy than most voters – a fact that we hope the winning candidate will address while in office so as to improve the health of everyone in our nation.

Fortunately, healthy habits in our control are even more important for our health than our social situation. Data from the nation’s biggest health studies, including the Nurse’s Health Study, the Health Professional’s Study, and the Medicare Studies suggest that chronic disease is reduced by 80-90% and cognitive function improved in people who engage in the “six healthy habits” and are up-to-date on their immunizations. The more of these healthy habits you have, the younger relative to your calendar age you are. We estimate that someone who has all six of these habits has the cognitive abilities of someone more than ten years younger than their chronological age. These six healthy habits include eating right, managing stress, being socially connected, being physically active, avoiding tobacco and excessive alcohol, and getting enough sleep. While we don’t have perfect data on the candidate’s health and all of their habits, we can make some inferences from what we’ve seen in the media.

Just the act of actively campaigning for the past 16 or so months indicates that the candidates are able to tolerate substantial stress. They are both very social and connected to strong, supportive families and the people they meet every day. Secretary Clinton enjoys exercising regularly and Mr. Trump plays golf. We would bet that they also both get in a lot of steps pounding the pavement and shaking hands. We also know that neither candidate smokes nor drinks much, if any, alcohol. Now, according to reports in the media, when it comes to eating, Secretary Clinton (who tries to eat healthfully) may be doing a better job than Mr. Trump (who often eats fast food), and neither of them is getting much sleep. While we don’t have all of their data, it’s fair to say that they are both mentally sharper than the “average” person with their chronological age, and from a health perspective, likely fit to be president.

    Donald Trump’s Black Voter Delusion

Michael K. Fauntroy is associate professor of political science at Howard University and the author of the book Republicans and the Black Vote. His next book, More than Just Partisanship: Conservatism and Black Voter Suppression will be published next year by New York University Press.

Donald Trump recently ramped up his Black voter outreach in the wake of poll after poll showing him failing to overcome a historically weak Democratic nominee in his bid for the White House. His Black outreach is equal parts condescension and bluster. He talked down to Black voters recently pointing out, inaccurately and out of context, that “you’re living in poverty, your schools are no good, you have no jobs, 58 percent of your youth are unemployed” before asking “What do you have to lose?” He also stated that he would get 95% of Black votes in his reelection campaign. Taken separately, these and other statements can charitably be said represent a deep misunderstanding of Black voters and Black life in America. Collectively, these statements reflect a deep delusion on the part of a candidate who has a history of race baiting.

Like most Republican nominees during the last eight decades, Trump has plenty of room for improvement. Credible recent polls show him with one or two percent support among Black voters. This is astonishingly low even among Republican nominees. If he ends up with two percent in November, then he would get half of what the 2008 nominee, John McCain, received in the historic election of Americas first Black President.

In the 22 presidential elections since 1936, for which even rudimentary polling was conducted, no Republican nominee has won a majority of Black votes. Only one, Thomas Dewey in 1944, received 40 percent, the high water mark in more than 75 years of presidential campaigns. Only three, Wendell Willkie, Dwight Eisenhower in 1956, and Richard Nixon in 1960, got between 30 and 39 percent. More recent Republican nominees have done consistently worse. In the last 10 elections, only Ronald Reagan in 1980 and Bob Dole in 1996 won 12 percent of the Black vote. Even setting aside the historic Barack Obama-induced headwinds facing John McCain in 2008 (four percent) and Mitt Romney in 2012 (six percent), GOP nominees since 1968 have largely been in the 10 to 15 percent range among African Americans. Trump is on the verge of a historically bad performance. After all, even Barry Goldwater won six percent of the Black vote in a treacherous 1964 campaign.

Trump’s “outreach” assumes that a few events in which he cynically mentions Black people is all that will be necessary to win over large numbers of African Americans to his cause. This strategy only works if Black voters are suddenly overtaken by amnesia and forget the many ways in which he has previously treated Black people. Unfortunately for Trump, there is a decades-long track record to show who he really is. He took out a full-page newspaper ad in April 1989 calling for a return of the death penalty in the wake of the infamous “Central Park 5.” The ad poured rhetorical gasoline on the anger many Whites felt over the five Black kids, the oldest of whom was 16, who were arrested for brutally beating and raping a White woman. They confessed under duress and without counsel present. Years later someone else confessed to the crime. DNA at the crime scene confirmed his guilt and the innocence of the falsely convicted. Trump has never apologized or acknowledged his inflammatory rhetoric during this period.

He joined up with racists when he became the most prominent among the far right birthers who repeatedly alleged that President Obama was not born in the United States. He elevated his profile among White racial conservatives by using his broad platform to traffic the false claims. Ignoring the evidence of Obama’s Hawaiian birth, he claimed that his investigators found that he was not born in the United States. He never produced evidence, just headlines. When proven false, rather than acknowledge his wrongness, he talked about the “service” he provided by keeping the issue in the news. Even now he cannot bring himself to acknowledge that he was wrong on all the facts about Obama’s birthplace.

The birth certificate foolishness, moreso than anything else he has said or done during the campaign, has made him radioactive in the Black community. Even Black people who are lukewarm to Obama understand the racist undercurrent of birtherism. They also understand that Trump led the charge in stoking the flames of birtherism. Questioning the nationality of an obviously native-born American, after a 2008 campaign that would have been stillborn if he were ineligible to serve, was Trump’s attempt to deligitimize the first Black President. Black people understood that then and remember it now.

His campaign is replete with other racial missteps and dog whistles. Since announcing his presidential bid, he has consistently tweeted or retweeted White supremacist conspiracy theories, erroneous statistics regarding Black crime, and seemingly encouraged the physical attacking of Black protestors at his rallies. Let’s also remember that David Duke, former Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan, has repeatedly spoken very highly of Trump. Duke cited Trump as the inspiration for his decision to run for the U.S. Senate this year.

Any campaign that is serious about outreach to African Americans would at least do the following. First, it would include African Americans in significant decision making campaign positions. Second, it would advance policy proposals that reflect respect for and understanding of Black life. Third, it would constantly speak with an inspirational voice that encourages not demonizes. Fourth, it would advertise in Black media outlets and contract with Black vendors. More importantly than all this, serious outreach would be timely, not something seemingly done as an afterthought. Trump has failed on all counts. He has no significant African Americans in serious positions (No, Omorosa doesn’t count!). He has made no policy proposals that show an understanding of Black issues. A speech given barely more than three months before the election is not timely. There has been no inspirational rhetoric and no evidence of significant Black media or vendor engagement.

Donald Trump won the Republican nomination by swimming in the rotten river of racial stereotypes and invective. Those now talking about his pivot to a more presidential general election mode would do well to remember that Trump has been around. And Black people know him well enough that a few speeches here and there won’t change anyone’s mind.

    Thought-Provoking Questions

Often, when I am booked for lectures or radio and television interviews, I am provided questions in advance to help me prepare. Some of the questions are provocative, the kind that make me stop and think. So much so, I am sharing a few here with my replies.

    1. What are three principles you live by?
    a) “Identify the fear and then go there.” Usually I’m afraid because it is something I have never done before, and so I figure I will at least learn something new. I always ask myself: What is the worst-case scenario? If it’s one I can deal with, I go for it.
    b) “Not everything worth doing is worth doing well.” Being stuck striving for perfection will not allow you to move on. For me, this pertains to writing. It is never finished and can always be improved upon. But at some point, it must be abandoned. Of course, this does not apply to everything; be sure to use discernment.
    c) “Maintain an open mind.” I try to not be judgmental or assume that I know best. I listen and attempt to understand other points of view, seeing them in the contexts of culture and personality. When presented with a new opportunity, I ask myself: Will I learn something?

    2. Do you believe nature or nurture has more impact?
People are born with specific tendencies; some children are shy, some are outgoing. This is a natural component of our genes, but then life experiences also impact our brains. Successes can reinforce behavior while failures discourage future attempts. So it is both. First it is nature, then nurture. Both have an equal influence.

    3. What do you wish you knew then that you know now?
I wish I had not cared so much about what other people thought of me. As women, we try to please others more than necessary. Speak the truth as often as possible and be willing to be disliked, but respected.

    4. What did you wish to be when you were a child?
My childhood dream was to be a poet. I won a poetry contest for a poem I wrote when I was eight. This early success inspired me to continue writing poems, which I still do today.

    5. What role does luck play in success?
Obviously, luck plays a part–you have to be at the right place, at the right time, with the right people. However, success is also “opportunity meeting preparation.” I am always scanning my environment to look for ways to make a contribution and a difference.

    6. What are the barriers to female leadership?
“MEN!” There is still gender discrimination, both conscious and unconscious, even by well-meaning men. Our culture continues to be dominated by male values, and, in the majority of cases, even when shown the same resume with a male or female name, men are chosen over women for both promotions and as new hires.

    7. What was your biggest challenge?
    a) Acceptance. As the only woman on the faculty of a business school, the first woman in a Rotary Club, the only female consultant in all-male organizations, I faced issues of acceptance. I did not try to blend in, as I knew this was not possible, so I stood out by wearing red suits, sitting on the arms of chairs to make me look taller (I am barely 5 feet tall).
    b) A close second was being ignored–not only feeling invisible, but, also, not heard, and (when earned) not rewarded.

    8. What changes in the workplace would you like to see?
I would like to see flexible working hours as a norm at work. This would permit time off not only for child-related needs, but, also, for the increasing needs of aging parents. Men must be provided with the same opportunity to take an equal share of these responsibilities without negative consequences in the workplace. What do you attribute your success to?
The willingness to ask the first question, using an assertive voice, looking others in the eye while conversing, giving credit when credit is due, looking and sounding confident (even when I do not feel that way), being well-prepared by knowing the agenda and relevant facts, and lastly, believing in myself.

    9. What are the three rules you live by?
    a) First of all, have fun. b) Do no harm. c) Be as helpful to as many people as possible.
I am urging you, my readers, to do the same. Think of each question as it relates to you, your values, philosophies, experiences, your life overall. Take time to answer these questions honestly and you might gain new insights–perhaps discover some unconscious motivations.

Trump’s Doctor Has An Amazing Explanation For That Bizarre Medical Report

Donald Trump’s personal physician told NBC News that he wrote a now-infamous medical report about the candidate in just five minutes.

Dr. Harold Bornstein, a gastroenterologist who has been Trump’s doctor for more than three decades, released a brief note last December declaring the reality TV star would be “the healthiest individual ever elected to the presidency.” The four-paragraph letter, which billed Trump’s health as “astonishingly excellent,” was far less detailed than medical reports traditionally released by presidential candidates.

In an interview with NBC airing Friday, Bornstein said he spent “five minutes” on the letter while a car sent by Trump waited for him outside his office in Manhattan.

“I get rushed and I get anxious when I get rushed, so I try to get four or five lines done as fast as possible,” Bornstein explained. “In a rush, I think some of those words didn’t come out exactly the way they were meant.”

The doctor stood by his assessment of the reality TV star’s wellness.

“His health is excellent, particularly his mental health,” he said.

He also defended the claim that Trump would be the healthiest president in history.

“I like that sentence to be quite honest with you, and all the rest of them are either sick or dead,” he said.

    Watch the interview above.

Bornstein and his bizarre note have come under scrutiny again as Trump and his campaign surrogates have floated conspiracy theories about Hillary Clinton’s health. MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow pressed Trump campaign manager Kellyane Conway on the issue during an interview Thursday.

“If he was elected, Donald Trump would be the oldest person to ever be sworn in as president,” Maddow said. “Whether or not he’s going to try to make Hillary Clinton’s health the issue, doesn’t he owe it to the American people to release an actual medical report, a more credible, more complete statement?”

Conway said “perhaps” he should release more information.

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.

“The New Trump”? Or is Character Destiny? (See “The New Nixon”)

    2014-02-03-BothSidesNowLogoPlaincolhirescopy1.jpg

    LISTEN HERE:

    By Mark Green

Trump begins the week with the WSJ urging the RNC to cut him loose if he can’t turn around his floundering campaign by Labor Day…and ends it with the Bannon-Manafort shuffle. Cooke & Lamarche laugh off the chance he can stop scratching his attention-getting-disorder itch. GOP prospects Nov. 9?

Trump’s policy & personnel. We listen to his anti-ISIS speech explaining how he’d utilize joint operations with allies, cyber-tech, intelligence-gathering — and “extreme, extreme extreme vetting” — to defeat ISIS. Charles Cooke is not against ideological screening per se “so long as it’s not religious screening” since the First Amendment doesn’t apply to non-citizens applying to get into US. Gara Lamarche notes that his policy prescriptions are precisely what the Obama administration is now doing…and his version of “extreme vetting” sounds beyond the pale.

The Host asks Cooke to tell our listeners what Breitbart News is and who its recent head, Steven Bannon, the new campaign CEO, is. “Bannon turned an insurgent libertarian right-wing site into a home for right-wing white nationalists. That is not pleasant to read or be. It’s a disgrace that a major party nominee associates with Breitbart.” He adds the the hire of Kelly Anne Conway as campaign manager is different because “she’s a good person with some talents.” (Host agrees on Conway, who was a BSN regular for a couple of years…except that her on-message assertions (Trump has “humilty”) and denunciations (HRC corrupt liar) renders her a Trumpian version of Baghdad Bob, albeit with a smile.)

Also, says Charles: “While fear-mongering often works and is done by both sides, it’s unlikely to succeed in 2016. While there are problems with the economy and crime, it’s nothing like the riots, assassinations and crime of 1968 that Nixon exploited.”

Net-net on the personnel changes? Gara argues that the Bannon appointment shows Trump wants not to win but just solidify his reactionary white-high-school male base for later commercialization. We’re reminded of the metaphor of Charles Sykes, a conservative talk show host in Wisconsin, who saw the move as an indication that Trump has entered his political hospice stage where he wants to be comforted by admirers at the end.

Can Trump’s expressed “regrets” for his name-calling and insults help warm up his bellicose persona? Maybe says Cooke, “if he can keep it up or the next three months but, even though the media wants a new story, that’s extraordinarily unlikely.” Gara: ” it’s not in his nature. ” Host: a person who’s gained fame and fortune by living like Andrew Dice Clay for 70 years isn’t very likely to turn into Ellen. Indeed, the next day he mockingly tweeted about Huma Abedin and Anthony Weiner. Very presidential. And since we don’t accept declarations of innocence by defendants at face value, it would be, er, credulous to believe the self-serving words of a proven serial liar who changes his views daily.

Ok, assume polls and trends are right and she wins by eight points + — who’s likely to win the battle for the soul of the Republican Party starting Nov. 9: the Trump/Fox/Cruz crowd or the Ryan/National Review/Reformocons team? Charles has a dog in this fight and argues for the latter because “Trump is sui generis — there aren’t any Trump-like Republicans, for example, running for the Senate. And he benefited from an unusual 17 person field [where he stood out]. Successful parties after a defeat can tamp down the excesses and absorb the best of both sides. Democrats too after the election will be split — so let’s see who can best absorb its rebels.”

Gara, however, thinks that the Breitbart crowd more likely to prevail and that “Cruz could then be well positioned.”

The Host dissents from Cooke: The problem is not so much Trump but the angry reactionary base that elevated him — and presumably they’ll be as furiously anti-Hillary as they’ve been anti-Barack. Unless they’re chastised by the 6th popular vote loss in seven presidential elections, they’ll continue to self-marginalize in a country where older Fox viewers are dying off to be replaced by rising and more liberal millennials and minorities. And there’s little reason to believe that, with a Democratic president, the Democrats will be anywhere as divided as the GOP. For one example, Sanders will campaign for Clinton but Cruz won’t for Trump.

Remember Hillary? Trump is not the only nominee to try pre-Fall to fix a this week. Gara applauds the news that Bill Clinton will resign from the Clinton Foundation if his wife becomes president and it will no longer accept foreign or corporate contributions to avoid the appearance of conflicts of interest. Charles isn’t impressed. arguing that it’s largely been a place for Clintonites to be employed and generate profits for them. “Do you really think that they’re grifters out to make more by raising a couple of billion to help advance health and the environment for millions of poor people in 3d world countries? Charles says, “‘it’s both.” Gara insists, “it’s public service.”

    Analyze this!
Is it fair for Democrats to assume that Trump is a narcissistic sociopath and for Republicans to assume that Clinton, in Trump’s words, lacks the “stability and stamina” to be president, while Hannity on Fox runs many segments asking “doctors” whether she’s suffering seizures from a fall a couple of years ago?

Gara and Charles think both are wrong to use psychiatric terms to analyze public people not under medical care — which is now called the “Goldwater Rule” after 1000+psychiatrists and psychologists said the ’64 GOP nominee was mentally unfit to serve. Lamarche, however, notes that the Clinton’s diagnosis is especially pernicious since a woman who served four years as a traveling Secretary of State and a vigorous candidate now for 16 months is in any way incapacitated, except as some WebMD docs assert on a partisan network.

*Will Trump’s Collapse sink GOP boats? Four more Democratic senators will make Chuck Schumer not Mitch McConnell the Majority Leader, which the panel agrees is likely. Cooke thinks that three seats are all but gone — Wisconsin, Indiana, Illinois — while several others are iffy, like PA and NH, perhaps NC and Arizona as well. Gara wonders “how can a Republican senator can survive if s/he has to run 8-10 points ahead of the top of the ticket? They have a very delicate dance here” because they can’t live with Trump, who’s so unpopular, but can’t live without him since they need his “low-education” voters.

A Clinton-Schumer-Pelos/or weakened-Ryan D.C. is very different from a Clinton-McConnell-strong Ryan one. While the Clinton agenda won’t be able to run the table due to the filibuster and likely House GOP majority, Ryan will have to deal more with her if his margin of 59 shrinks to say 25, which now appears to be likely.

*Conservative Books. The top three NYT non-fiction best-sellers last Sunday (and top four this Sunday) were all right-wing screeds denouncing Hillary, liberals etc. How come their books sell more than comparable liberal books? Charles — author of the serious non-screed The Conservatarian Manifesto — has some ideas: Readers with money and time are older, more likely to buy books, and skew Republican, while younger voters are less likely to pick up a book than go on-line. Adds Gara: “conservatives are more isolated, angry and aggrieved and more likely to buy a book to see their viewpoints validated.” Adds the Host: unlike MSNBC which rarely promotes an author and has fewer viewers, a show like Hannity puts on any eccentric wight-winger, plugs the book, and it jumps on Amazon.”

These Underwater Yoga Photos Prove The Practice Is Truly Magical

Looking for a reason to hit the yoga mat today? Take a gander at these stunning photos.

The surreal images, which were snapped by photographer Elena Kalis, feature yoga instructor Britta Jade as she masterfully executes yoga poses under water. They’re a truly majestic display of how yoga can be both athletic and a work of art.

The photos are an inspirational reminder that the practice can be one of the best ways to move your body. Research shows yoga can reduce stress and lower your risk for heart disease. It also can improve your sleep and boost your brain function. Not to mention the fact that yoga can be an excellent form of strength training, which can help maintain a healthy weight.

While not everyone can exactly run off to the crystal shores of a remote island to nail these moves, there are some added perks to taking your yoga practice to the water. Studies suggest being near the ocean can make you calmer and more creative. The sea also puts your brain in a more meditative state.

If you’ve been slacking on a yoga routine (or hesitant to try one at all), take a look at the pictures below. Then check out these healthy reasons to prioritize the practice for additional motivation.

Health Official Warns Zika Could Spread Across U.S. Gulf

Aug 21 (Reuters) – One of the top U.S. public health officials on Sunday warned that the mosquito-borne Zika virus could extend its reach across the U.S. Gulf Coast after officials last week confirmed it as active in the popular tourist destination of Miami Beach.

The possibility of transmission in Gulf States such as Louisiana and Texas will likely fuel concerns that the virus, which has been shown to cause the severe birth defect known as microcephaly, could spread across the continental United States, even though officials have played down such an outcome.

Concern has mounted since confirmation that Zika has expanded into a second region of the tourist hub of Miami-Dade County in Florida. Miami’s Wynwood arts neighborhood last month became the site of the first locally transmitted cases of Zika in the continental United States.

“It would not be surprising we would see additional cases perhaps in other Gulf Coast states,” Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the allergy and infectious diseases unit of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), said in an interview on Sunday morning with ABC News.

Fauci noted that record flooding this month in Louisiana – which has killed at least 13 people and damaged some 60,000 homes damaged – has boosted the likelihood Zika will spread into that state.

“There’s going to be a lot of problems getting rid of standing water” that could stymie the mosquito control efforts that are the best way to control Zika’s spread, he said.

U.S. health officials have concluded that Zika infections in pregnant women can cause microcephaly, a birth defect marked by small head size that can lead to severe developmental problems in babies. The connection between Zika and microcephaly first came to light last fall in Brazil, which has now confirmed 1,835 cases of microcephaly that it considers to be related to Zika infections in the mothers.

On Friday, Florida Governor Rick Scott confirmed that state health officials had identified five cases of Zika believed to be contracted in Miami Beach.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told pregnant women they should avoid the trendy area and suggested those especially worried about exposure might consider avoiding all of Miami-Dade County.

NIH’s Fauci on Sunday said the conditions of most of the country make it unlikely there would be a “diffuse, broad outbreak,” even though officials need to prepare for that possibility.

He compared it with diseases such as Dengue, which is endemic in certain tropical and subtropical regions of the world but rarely occurs in the continental United States. In Miami’s Wynwood area, experts have seen “substantial” knockdowns of mosquito populations.

Still, its containment is more complicated because Zika can be sexually transmitted, Fauci said.

“This is something that could hang around for a year or two,” he said.

The World Health Organization has said there is strong scientific consensus that Zika can also cause Guillain-Barre, a rare neurological syndrome that causes temporary paralysis in adults.

    theNewerYork Book III (theNewerYork)

This is a collection of experimental short-fiction. The stories are beautifully designed and paired with art. The contributors come from all over the world. Artists throughout the ages, from Dali to Proust, have taken their talents to exposing time; here is theNewerYork’s attempt. The stories in this collection in one way or another, deal with loss, youth, death, joy, tradition, technology, and the generally evasive enigma that we call ‘time’. It’s not as obtuse as it sounds, it’s just a good read and it fits in your back pocket. This project was funded on Kickstarter. Nara Chin at Cool Hunting calls it “an inspiring exercise in exploring new forms of expression.” Edwin Turner at Biblioklept says it’s “a worthy alternative to your iPhone.” This project was funded on Kickstarter. Some of the narratives and short-fictions in this book include: rejected submissions to a baby names book, a list of ways the Catholic Church is Appealing to youth, a time traveling epistolary, fictional definitions, unfamous quotes, a Shakespearean sonnet in morse code, and a standardized test.

Women In Jail Are Fastest Growing Segment Of America’s Incarcerated Population

In 1970, there were less than 8,000 women in American jails. By 2014, that number had skyrocketed to nearly 110,000 ― making women in jails the fastest growing segment of America’s incarcerated population.

Yet, surprisingly little research exists on who these women are or why they are increasingly ending up behind bars.

A comprehensive report by the Vera Institute of Justice and the Safety and Justice Challenge, released on Wednesday, is now attempting to fill that knowledge gap.

“Because the research is pretty old and scarce, we had to cobble together a portrait,” said Elizabeth Swavola, the primary author of the report.

Women in jail are mostly black and Hispanic, overwhelmingly poor and low-income, and nearly 80 percent are mothers, she said. Many have high rates of trauma, serious mental and physical illness and histories of substance abuse.

The report was funded by the Safety and Justice Challenge, a national initiative that aims to reduce mass incarceration by changing how America thinks about jails. Unlike prison, where those convicted of crimes are sent to serve sentences, most people in jail are awaiting trial and are legally presumed innocent.

While jails have been rightly recognized as a driver of mass incarceration, Swavola said, women are often left out of the national conversation because they comprise only a small percentage of the incarcerated population as a whole. But women’s pathways to incarceration are different than their male counterparts, she explained, and deserve to be investigated closely.

“Jails are designed for men, because they’re the majority of who is there,” she said. “But that makes it very difficult on women.”

One of the report’s most surprising findings was the high rates of trauma reported by jailed women. According to one study cited in the report, 86 percent of women in jail reported being a victim of sexual violence and 77 percent reported a history of domestic violence. The same pattern has been found among child offenders, with 84 percent of girls in the juvenile justice system reporting that they experienced family violence.

Swavola said women coming to jail with a history of trauma may find standard procedures such as shackling or strip searches deeply distressing, and may trigger painful memories.

Women in jail are especially vulnerable to sexual assault by correctional staff, she said. Between 2009 and 2011, women only made up 13 percent of the jail population, but were 67 percent of victims of sexual abuse by staff members.

Jailed women are also sicker than their male counterparts.

Around 32 percent have a serious mental illness, Swavola said, including major depression, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. That’s double the rate of jailed men. Over half of jailed women report having a current medical problem, compared to 35 percent of men. In one study, 82 percent of jailed women reported they’d experienced drug or alcohol abuse or dependence in their lifetime.

“They are coming with a whole host of disadvantages, and many of those disadvantages lead to their criminal justice involvement, and then are deepened by the criminal justice system itself,” she said.

Like men, most women in jail are charged with low-level nonviolent crimes, such as property crimes, drug offenses and public order offenses. But they typically have less money than jailed men, Swavola said, and being incarcerated can jeopardize their financial security.

“They come to the system so financially marginalized, and then at each step of the process, there are fines and fees,” she said, noting that nearly half of all single black and Hispanic women have zero or negative net worth. “It perpetuates a cycle of disadvantage. You really have to question what the utility is at some point.”

Laurie Garduque, the director of Justice Reform for the MacArthur Foundation, said it’s important to think about jails as a local problem that requires local solutions.

“This is a community issue,” she said. “In order for law enforcement, courts and corrections to divert women from jail, they are going to need supports and services in the community.”

    Letting Go Of Toxic People

Clearing our bodies of toxins isn’t always about what we eat or drink. Sometimes removing the poison means you have to make the difficult decision to cut toxic people out of your life to heal your soul.

    It’s not an easy task.

Sometimes we aren’t even aware of the damage being caused from the negative energy of a friend or family member.

We don’t notice when someone is trying to control us. The signs are missed. You don’t understand why you are agitated, annoyed, and anxiety ridden in someone’s presence until you take a step back and get in touch with your inner self.

You don’t recognize that you often keep silent and resist the urge to defend yourself, to speak out when you are hearing lies. You give excuses as to why someone behaves the way they do because they have been there for you often over the years and you afraid to lose that perceived support.

I live by my emotions, and don’t always understand why I feel the way I do around certain people. It isn’t until I have “fact” that I can step away.

Maybe it’s the reporter in me — there is always two sides to a story. I try very hard to see every angle. Even if my instincts are telling me to walk away, I have a hard time cutting the anchor because I don’t want to ever be seen as “mean” or “bad.”

My insecurities often get the better of and have been used against me. But slowly I’m starting to emerge from my shell.

Maybe it’s getting older. You start to realize that not everyone has your best interest at heart. Some people like when you are in crisis because it fulfills their want to be needed. They feed off the drama.

They fill your head with half-truths and half-lies, making you believe things about yourself that you know aren’t true. They put a slant on every story in order in order to make themselves able to fit the role they’ve created.

For their story to work you have to be the antagonist or partner in crime because otherwise they will have to come face to face with themselves in the mirror.

It’s not easy to let go of the friendships, relationships and family loyalties that cause you pain.

But in the words of my friend Deb,

“If you need to cut ties, do it, and find those kind-like souls that can feed your spirit.”

The braver you are and recognize and remove those hurting you, the more room you have to be your true self and let the right people in who lift you up, not weigh you down.

Puppy Raisers Make World A Better Place

If you have ever spoken with a person who uses an assistance dog, you know that these dogs change lives. Whether it’s a PTSD dog helping a military person return to “regular life,” a hearing dog providing alerts to a person who cannot hear anything from the doorbell to a fire alarm, or a service dog providing aid to a person lacking mobility, these dogs are capable of miracles.

And what if you were offered the opportunity to be a part of one of those miracles? Most of us would certainly give the offer serious thought.

Last week was all about miracle workers, because it was International Assistance Dog Week (August 7-13), a week designated to honor service dogs and those who make those assistance dogs possible.

The teams of people needed to breed dogs, raise puppies, and train dogs satisfactorily to be service dogs are a hardworking lot, spread throughout the country, and they are affiliated with various service dog organizations.

More miracles, of course, are dependent on a bigger pipeline of puppies. As Katie Malatino, public relations coordinator for Canine Companions for Independence in Santa Rosa, California, says: “In order to provide more assistance dogs free of charge for people with disabilities, Canine Companions is gradually increasing the number of puppies in our program. Additional volunteers are a critical part of our mission.”

    Getting Involved

So how do you get involved? Organizations that train service dogs use all sorts of volunteers. People are needed to help with running events, taking a shift at a fair or a mall where the organization is distributing literature, and assisting with all kinds of tasks related to running a business.

But perhaps the most selfless volunteers of all are the people who become puppy raisers. They willingly take a dog into their homes for about sixteen months and agree to take the dog out with them on excursions at all times possible, take them regularly for training classes (in which the puppy raiser also participates), and do everything they can to help this dog become a service animal.

Puppy raisers always know that if they do their jobs well—and the dog’s temperament is right—the dog will go on to live with someone else, being their eyes or their ears or an extra pair of hands. And of course, the dogs will always be the person’s first alert in case of an emergency.
Puppy raisers may be losing a puppy they loved, but they will come as close humanly possible to helping bring about a miracle.

Heartbreaking to have to give up a puppy? Yes. Heartwarming to see that dog function at the highest level in making another person’s life better… you bet!

    How Puppy Raisers Feel
Sondra Thiederman is now raising her tenth puppy for Canine Companions for Independence, and she loves doing it. “My most memorable moment was when I handed over the leash of a service dog I raised to the woman she is now assisting. I can only describe it as a profound feeling of ‘ rightness’ – as if something 100% positive was happening and that we were a part of something special.”

Another puppy raiser, Mary Milton, says she is having the time of her life as a puppy raiser. “It is such an honor and privilege to see how these assistance dogs really do help people with disabilities become more independent. It is life-changing for them.”

And a couple, Jolie and Gene Marzo, wrote in an email: “If we can help make someone’s life better by raising an assistance dog, then we are lucky and proud to do it. The person’s smile is all we need to keep us going!”

    So are you tempted?

    Double-Check Your Plan
Like any other type of volunteer work, you want to make sure you feel comfortable with the organization you contact. You also need to be sure that being an on-the-ground puppy raiser is for you.

To do this, check what assistance dog programs are in your area. Assistance Dogs International sets the standards for assistance dog training. By visiting their site, you can click on a map for your region of the country to see what programs might be near you. Visit, offer to do some onsite volunteering with them (that, too, is very much appreciated), and talk to puppy raisers.

Canine Companions, the largest nonprofit providing assistance dogs, has offices in many parts of the country, and some of their puppy raisers live far afield. However, getting to know an organization is certainly much easier if you have an opportunity to meet some of the people.

Once you have some programs to check out, visit their websites. The Canine Companions website has a list of responsibilities to which puppy raisers commit. Socialization—taking the dog out to experience all types of social situations and public environments—as well as attendance at local obedience classes are two elements that are vital to returning with a well-mannered dog who knows basic commands.

Another organization I have had recent contact with is Susquehanna Service Dogs, located in Pennsylvania. They want puppy raisers somewhat nearby as they provide training classes and veterinary care near their headquarters. In addition to puppy raisers, they keep a list of puppy sitters… people who are familiar with the program so that they can fill in for a day or a week or longer if puppy raiser needs to be away and can’t take the dog with them. This seems like a good way to test out whether full-time puppy raising is for you.

If you decide to apply to be a puppy raiser, you will have plenty of opportunity to have any additional questions answered during the application process.

    More Dogs, More Miracles?
“If I hadn’t done this, I never would have had the joy of feeling that my efforts had, in fact, contributed to helping another human being live a more independent and productive life,” says puppy raiser Sondra Thiederman.

Susan Tyson of Susquehanna Service Dogs adds: “We’re changing people’s lives one dog at a time!”

To read about some of the lives that have been changed, see the story about Mary Hill, who needed to retire her first service dog so she is now one year into life with her new dog, or Professor John Terhorst, who teaches chemistry at Vanguard University and knows exactly why his students are always smiling in the classroom. There’s also Heather, a hearing dog, who makes Jeanne Glass’s life complete.

Also read about John Wiesniewski and his dog, Slate. Slate has helped two veterans who suffered symptoms of PTSD. There is also a story about a diabetic alert dog, Ija, who worked in the classroom with a teacher.

And many organizations have active facebook presences where you can keep up on the puppies and the progress with the people with whom they are eventually paired.

6 Ways The GOP Fails To Be Pro-Life

For my entire adult life, the standard line from Christian conservatives has been for people to vote their conscience. Groups like the American Family Association, Family Research Council, and Focus on the Family have put out voter guides each year for as long as I can remember, encouraging people to vote for the candidate who best reflected where the morals of a Christian politician should be. They have always decried the accusations of partisanship, but rather strictly about voting for the candidate who lined up with what they believed were Christian values about abortion, marriage equality, and inexplicably to me at least, gun rights and tax breaks. Vote your conscience has been in every election I’ve seen since I was old enough to vote in 1992, always amped up every four years when it’s time to elect a president. The subtext has always been that Christians should vote Republican, but it has been a standard line.

    +++++

I watched last week’s Republican National Convention through the lens of late night talk show hosts and my Twitter and Facebook feeds. I did the same this week for much of the Democratic National Convention. I did watch Michelle Obama’s powerful speech, as well as the uplifting words from Senator Cory Booker, but for the most part political rah-rah’ing isn’t my idea of a good time. Catching up with America Ninja Warrior on Hulu after an evening hunting for Pokémon is far more my speed. Anger and dissension just wear me out.

There was a lot to take in at the RNC, but the one that rattled around in my mind the most was when Senator Ted Cruz was booed off of the stage as it became apparent he would not endorse Donald Trump, but rather said to the crowd, “Stand, and speak, and vote your conscience, vote for candidates up and down the ticket who you trust to defend our freedom and to be faithful to the Constitution.” This was met with roars of disapproval from the crowd in attendance.

I do understand that part of the job of the convention is to rally around the party’s nominee. To come together and present a united front, and the lack of an official, strong endorsement from a prime time speaker is surprising (though the speech was available to the RNC ahead of time). So I can see that some at the convention would be upset that a speaker would neglect that aspect. But barring the lack of an endorsement, the content of Cruz’s speech was lifted straight from the Republican platform. Close the borders. Beware of ISIS. States’ rights. Gun rights. Small government.

I may disagree with most of the policies presented in Cruz’s speech, but there is nothing in them that should cause a group of Republicans to boo. Only the mention that they should vote their conscience incited that reaction. Only the idea that voting your conscience might not lead you to vote in the way that stays within party lines.

The truth is, I’m a single issue voter. When I vote my conscience, it looks like one thing.

Voting for a candidate with a strong pro-life ethic. Which has, for most of my adult life, looked like voting for a Democrat rather than a Republican.

Yes, in the area of abortion, the Democrats often fail. In order to prove the value of the woman who is pregnant, the value of the life inside of her is devalued. Too often we see life only if it is desired – if not, it becomes an embryo, fetal tissue, a parasite. Abortion is a complex issue, but when we speak of a potential human without respect, we cheapen the cry of equality, especially in the eyes of those who call themselves pro-life.

But a pro-life ethic has to mean more than just where a candidate stands on abortion (though Donald Trump’s stand on abortion is fairly unclear).

A pro-life ethic must respect women. Donald Trump’s views of women are abhorrent. If you’re unable to see women as people deserving even a modicum of respect, you can’t be pro-life.

A pro-life ethic must listen to the voices of black men and women. The chants of All Lives Matter when confronted with the assertion that Black Lives Matter must end. Of course all lives matter. But black men and women matter as well, and much of our country’s history has belied that. Even Michelle Obama’s statement that she lives in a home built by slaves was met with a statement from conservative Bill O’Reilly saying, Sure, they were slaves, but it wasn’t that bad. A pro-life ethic can affirm that all lives matter while also saying that yes, black lives matter. Not with comments about “black on black crime” or “more white people are in jail” or “just listen to the police.” Instead, those of use who are not black need to shut up and listen. And then see how we can begin to change the system to make things more equal for our black brothers and sisters.

A pro-life ethic must respect those with disabilities. Donald Trump has openly mocked a journalist with disabilities. I mother several children on the autism spectrum. My heart would be broken if a public leader were to deride them publicly. We cannot offer lip service to a pro-life ethic and sit by while the Republican nominee has shown contempt in his actions for those with disabilities.

A pro-life ethic must encourage adoption. One of the ways that we encourage a pro-life ethic is to encourage people to adopt. The GOP platform reaffirms opposition to gay and lesbian couples adopting. My friend Sean and his husband have adopted two gorgeous boys (Sean has written about it in his best-selling book, Which One of You is the Mother?). They adopted children who were older. Children from difficult birth families. They adopted them, they love them, they parent them. Children who, if left in foster care, would have had a 45% chance of ending up homeless. Children who, if left in foster care, would have had a 75% chance of ending up in prison. Children who, because of their adoption by a gay couple, now have the chance to experience family.

A pro-life ethic must look at the ways life is cut short beyond abortion. Yes, I’m talking about guns. I am not a gun owner and I didn’t grow up in a house with guns, so I tend to speak very little on this issue, because I don’t know much about gun laws or the way that guns even work. But when Republicans block even research about gun violence, it is difficult for me to see that as caring about life. When a group covers their ears, refusing to even have a conversation about ways we can make life safer in a world with guns, I cannot call that group pro-life.

A pro-life ethic must see people, even our enemies, as people first. During his campaign, Donald Trump advocated war crimes when he suggested that the United States not only hunt down terrorists, but also “take out their families.” He has lumped all Muslims into the category of radical, calling for a ban on all Muslims entering the United States. He has painted with the broad brush that Mexican immigrants are rapists and murderers. Donald Trump has called vast swaths of non-white ethnicities our enemies, and then challenged their humanity. If an unborn child is a person, surely even those who seek to do us harm is are people as well.

In November, I will be voting my conscience, and it will be based on a pro-life ethic.

I hope you will do the same.
