“The New Trump”? Or is Character Destiny? (See “The New Nixon”)

LISTEN HERE:

By Mark Green

Trump begins the week with the WSJ urging the RNC to cut him loose if he can’t turn around his floundering campaign by Labor Day…and ends it with the Bannon-Manafort shuffle. Cooke & Lamarche laugh off the chance he can stop scratching his attention-getting-disorder itch. GOP prospects Nov. 9?

Trump’s policy & personnel. We listen to his anti-ISIS speech explaining how he’d utilize joint operations with allies, cyber-tech, intelligence-gathering — and “extreme, extreme extreme vetting” — to defeat ISIS. Charles Cooke is not against ideological screening per se “so long as it’s not religious screening” since the First Amendment doesn’t apply to non-citizens applying to get into US. Gara Lamarche notes that his policy prescriptions are precisely what the Obama administration is now doing…and his version of “extreme vetting” sounds beyond the pale.

The Host asks Cooke to tell our listeners what Breitbart News is and who its recent head, Steven Bannon, the new campaign CEO, is. “Bannon turned an insurgent libertarian right-wing site into a home for right-wing white nationalists. That is not pleasant to read or be. It’s a disgrace that a major party nominee associates with Breitbart.” He adds the the hire of Kelly Anne Conway as campaign manager is different because “she’s a good person with some talents.” (Host agrees on Conway, who was a BSN regular for a couple of years…except that her on-message assertions (Trump has “humilty”) and denunciations (HRC corrupt liar) renders her a Trumpian version of Baghdad Bob, albeit with a smile.)

Also, says Charles: “While fear-mongering often works and is done by both sides, it’s unlikely to succeed in 2016. While there are problems with the economy and crime, it’s nothing like the riots, assassinations and crime of 1968 that Nixon exploited.”

Net-net on the personnel changes? Gara argues that the Bannon appointment shows Trump wants not to win but just solidify his reactionary white-high-school male base for later commercialization. We’re reminded of the metaphor of Charles Sykes, a conservative talk show host in Wisconsin, who saw the move as an indication that Trump has entered his political hospice stage where he wants to be comforted by admirers at the end.

Can Trump’s expressed “regrets” for his name-calling and insults help warm up his bellicose persona? Maybe says Cooke, “if he can keep it up or the next three months but, even though the media wants a new story, that’s extraordinarily unlikely.” Gara: ” it’s not in his nature. ” Host: a person who’s gained fame and fortune by living like Andrew Dice Clay for 70 years isn’t very likely to turn into Ellen. Indeed, the next day he mockingly tweeted about Huma Abedin and Anthony Weiner. Very presidential. And since we don’t accept declarations of innocence by defendants at face value, it would be, er, credulous to believe the self-serving words of a proven serial liar who changes his views daily.

Ok, assume polls and trends are right and she wins by eight points + — who’s likely to win the battle for the soul of the Republican Party starting Nov. 9: the Trump/Fox/Cruz crowd or the Ryan/National Review/Reformocons team? Charles has a dog in this fight and argues for the latter because “Trump is sui generis — there aren’t any Trump-like Republicans, for example, running for the Senate. And he benefited from an unusual 17 person field [where he stood out]. Successful parties after a defeat can tamp down the excesses and absorb the best of both sides. Democrats too after the election will be split — so let’s see who can best absorb its rebels.”

Gara, however, thinks that the Breitbart crowd more likely to prevail and that “Cruz could then be well positioned.”

The Host dissents from Cooke: The problem is not so much Trump but the angry reactionary base that elevated him — and presumably they’ll be as furiously anti-Hillary as they’ve been anti-Barack. Unless they’re chastised by the 6th popular vote loss in seven presidential elections, they’ll continue to self-marginalize in a country where older Fox viewers are dying off to be replaced by rising and more liberal millennials and minorities. And there’s little reason to believe that, with a Democratic president, the Democrats will be anywhere as divided as the GOP. For one example, Sanders will campaign for Clinton but Cruz won’t for Trump.

Remember Hillary? Trump is not the only nominee to try pre-Fall to fix a this week. Gara applauds the news that Bill Clinton will resign from the Clinton Foundation if his wife becomes president and it will no longer accept foreign or corporate contributions to avoid the appearance of conflicts of interest. Charles isn’t impressed. arguing that it’s largely been a place for Clintonites to be employed and generate profits for them. “Do you really think that they’re grifters out to make more by raising a couple of billion to help advance health and the environment for millions of poor people in 3d world countries? Charles says, “‘it’s both.” Gara insists, “it’s public service.”

Analyze this!
Is it fair for Democrats to assume that Trump is a narcissistic sociopath and for Republicans to assume that Clinton, in Trump’s words, lacks the “stability and stamina” to be president, while Hannity on Fox runs many segments asking “doctors” whether she’s suffering seizures from a fall a couple of years ago?

Gara and Charles think both are wrong to use psychiatric terms to analyze public people not under medical care — which is now called the “Goldwater Rule” after 1000+psychiatrists and psychologists said the ’64 GOP nominee was mentally unfit to serve. Lamarche, however, notes that the Clinton’s diagnosis is especially pernicious since a woman who served four years as a traveling Secretary of State and a vigorous candidate now for 16 months is in any way incapacitated, except as some WebMD docs assert on a partisan network.

*Will Trump’s Collapse sink GOP boats? Four more Democratic senators will make Chuck Schumer not Mitch McConnell the Majority Leader, which the panel agrees is likely. Cooke thinks that three seats are all but gone — Wisconsin, Indiana, Illinois — while several others are iffy, like PA and NH, perhaps NC and Arizona as well. Gara wonders “how can a Republican senator can survive if s/he has to run 8-10 points ahead of the top of the ticket? They have a very delicate dance here” because they can’t live with Trump, who’s so unpopular, but can’t live without him since they need his “low-education” voters.

A Clinton-Schumer-Pelos/or weakened-Ryan D.C. is very different from a Clinton-McConnell-strong Ryan one. While the Clinton agenda won’t be able to run the table due to the filibuster and likely House GOP majority, Ryan will have to deal more with her if his margin of 59 shrinks to say 25, which now appears to be likely.

*Conservative Books. The top three NYT non-fiction best-sellers last Sunday (and top four this Sunday) were all right-wing screeds denouncing Hillary, liberals etc. How come their books sell more than comparable liberal books? Charles — author of the serious non-screed The Conservatarian Manifesto — has some ideas: Readers with money and time are older, more likely to buy books, and skew Republican, while younger voters are less likely to pick up a book than go on-line. Adds Gara: “conservatives are more isolated, angry and aggrieved and more likely to buy a book to see their viewpoints validated.” Adds the Host: unlike MSNBC which rarely promotes an author and has fewer viewers, a show like Hannity puts on any eccentric wight-winger, plugs the book, and it jumps on Amazon.”

These Underwater Yoga Photos Prove The Practice Is Truly Magical

Looking for a reason to hit the yoga mat today? Take a gander at these stunning photos.

The surreal images, which were snapped by photographer Elena Kalis, feature yoga instructor Britta Jade as she masterfully executes yoga poses under water. They’re a truly majestic display of how yoga can be both athletic and a work of art.

The photos are an inspirational reminder that the practice can be one of the best ways to move your body. Research shows yoga can reduce stress and lower your risk for heart disease. It also can improve your sleep and boost your brain function. Not to mention the fact that yoga can be an excellent form of strength training, which can help maintain a healthy weight.

While not everyone can exactly run off to the crystal shores of a remote island to nail these moves, there are some added perks to taking your yoga practice to the water. Studies suggest being near the ocean can make you calmer and more creative. The sea also puts your brain in a more meditative state.

If you’ve been slacking on a yoga routine (or hesitant to try one at all), take a look at the pictures below. Then check out these healthy reasons to prioritize the practice for additional motivation.

Health Official Warns Zika Could Spread Across U.S. Gulf

Aug 21 (Reuters) – One of the top U.S. public health officials on Sunday warned that the mosquito-borne Zika virus could extend its reach across the U.S. Gulf Coast after officials last week confirmed it as active in the popular tourist destination of Miami Beach.

The possibility of transmission in Gulf States such as Louisiana and Texas will likely fuel concerns that the virus, which has been shown to cause the severe birth defect known as microcephaly, could spread across the continental United States, even though officials have played down such an outcome.

Concern has mounted since confirmation that Zika has expanded into a second region of the tourist hub of Miami-Dade County in Florida. Miami’s Wynwood arts neighborhood last month became the site of the first locally transmitted cases of Zika in the continental United States.

“It would not be surprising we would see additional cases perhaps in other Gulf Coast states,” Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the allergy and infectious diseases unit of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), said in an interview on Sunday morning with ABC News.

Fauci noted that record flooding this month in Louisiana – which has killed at least 13 people and damaged some 60,000 homes damaged – has boosted the likelihood Zika will spread into that state.

“There’s going to be a lot of problems getting rid of standing water” that could stymie the mosquito control efforts that are the best way to control Zika’s spread, he said.

U.S. health officials have concluded that Zika infections in pregnant women can cause microcephaly, a birth defect marked by small head size that can lead to severe developmental problems in babies. The connection between Zika and microcephaly first came to light last fall in Brazil, which has now confirmed 1,835 cases of microcephaly that it considers to be related to Zika infections in the mothers.

On Friday, Florida Governor Rick Scott confirmed that state health officials had identified five cases of Zika believed to be contracted in Miami Beach.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told pregnant women they should avoid the trendy area and suggested those especially worried about exposure might consider avoiding all of Miami-Dade County.

NIH’s Fauci on Sunday said the conditions of most of the country make it unlikely there would be a “diffuse, broad outbreak,” even though officials need to prepare for that possibility.

He compared it with diseases such as Dengue, which is endemic in certain tropical and subtropical regions of the world but rarely occurs in the continental United States. In Miami’s Wynwood area, experts have seen “substantial” knockdowns of mosquito populations.

Still, its containment is more complicated because Zika can be sexually transmitted, Fauci said.

“This is something that could hang around for a year or two,” he said.

The World Health Organization has said there is strong scientific consensus that Zika can also cause Guillain-Barre, a rare neurological syndrome that causes temporary paralysis in adults.

theNewerYork Book III (theNewerYork)

This is a collection of experimental short-fiction. The stories are beautifully designed and paired with art. The contributors come from all over the world. Artists throughout the ages, from Dali to Proust, have taken their talents to exposing time; here is theNewerYork’s attempt. The stories in this collection in one way or another, deal with loss, youth, death, joy, tradition, technology, and the generally evasive enigma that we call ‘time’. It’s not as obtuse as it sounds, it’s just a good read and it fits in your back pocket. This project was funded on Kickstarter. Nara Chin at Cool Hunting calls it “an inspiring exercise in exploring new forms of expression.” Edwin Turner at Biblioklept says it’s “a worthy alternative to your iPhone.” This project was funded on Kickstarter. Women In Jail Are Fastest Growing Segment Of America’s Incarcerated Population

In 1970, there were less than 8,000 women in American jails. By 2014, that number had skyrocketed to nearly 110,000 ― making women in jails the fastest growing segment of America’s incarcerated population.

Yet, surprisingly little research exists on who these women are or why they are increasingly ending up behind bars.

A comprehensive report by the Vera Institute of Justice and the Safety and Justice Challenge, released on Wednesday, is now attempting to fill that knowledge gap.

“Because the research is pretty old and scarce, we had to cobble together a portrait,” said Elizabeth Swavola, the primary author of the report.

Women in jail are mostly black and Hispanic, overwhelmingly poor and low-income, and nearly 80 percent are mothers, she said. Many have high rates of trauma, serious mental and physical illness and histories of substance abuse.

The report was funded by the Safety and Justice Challenge, a national initiative that aims to reduce mass incarceration by changing how America thinks about jails. Unlike prison, where those convicted of crimes are sent to serve sentences, most people in jail are awaiting trial and are legally presumed innocent.

While jails have been rightly recognized as a driver of mass incarceration, Swavola said, women are often left out of the national conversation because they comprise only a small percentage of the incarcerated population as a whole. But women’s pathways to incarceration are different than their male counterparts, she explained, and deserve to be investigated closely.

“Jails are designed for men, because they’re the majority of who is there,” she said. “But that makes it very difficult on women.”

One of the report’s most surprising findings was the high rates of trauma reported by jailed women. According to one study cited in the report, 86 percent of women in jail reported being a victim of sexual violence and 77 percent reported a history of domestic violence. The same pattern has been found among child offenders, with 84 percent of girls in the juvenile justice system reporting that they experienced family violence.

Swavola said women coming to jail with a history of trauma may find standard procedures such as shackling or strip searches deeply distressing, and may trigger painful memories.

Women in jail are especially vulnerable to sexual assault by correctional staff, she said. Between 2009 and 2011, women only made up 13 percent of the jail population, but were 67 percent of victims of sexual abuse by staff members.

Jailed women are also sicker than their male counterparts.

Around 32 percent have a serious mental illness, Swavola said, including major depression, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. That’s double the rate of jailed men. Over half of jailed women report having a current medical problem, compared to 35 percent of men. In one study, 82 percent of jailed women reported they’d experienced drug or alcohol abuse or dependence in their lifetime.

“They are coming with a whole host of disadvantages, and many of those disadvantages lead to their criminal justice involvement, and then are deepened by the criminal justice system itself,” she said.

Like men, most women in jail are charged with low-level nonviolent crimes, such as property crimes, drug offenses and public order offenses. But they typically have less money than jailed men, Swavola said, and being incarcerated can jeopardize their financial security.

“They come to the system so financially marginalized, and then at each step of the process, there are fines and fees,” she said, noting that nearly half of all single black and Hispanic women have zero or negative net worth. “It perpetuates a cycle of disadvantage. You really have to question what the utility is at some point.”

Laurie Garduque, the director of Justice Reform for the MacArthur Foundation, said it’s important to think about jails as a local problem that requires local solutions.

“This is a community issue,” she said. “In order for law enforcement, courts and corrections to divert women from jail, they are going to need supports and services in the community.”

Letting Go Of Toxic People

Clearing our bodies of toxins isn’t always about what we eat or drink. Sometimes removing the poison means you have to make the difficult decision to cut toxic people out of your life to heal your soul.

It’s not an easy task.

Sometimes we aren’t even aware of the damage being caused from the negative energy of a friend or family member.

We don’t notice when someone is trying to control us. The signs are missed. You don’t understand why you are agitated, annoyed, and anxiety ridden in someone’s presence until you take a step back and get in touch with your inner self.

You don’t recognize that you often keep silent and resist the urge to defend yourself, to speak out when you are hearing lies. You give excuses as to why someone behaves the way they do because they have been there for you often over the years and you afraid to lose that perceived support.

I live by my emotions, and don’t always understand why I feel the way I do around certain people. It isn’t until I have “fact” that I can step away.

Maybe it’s the reporter in me — there is always two sides to a story. I try very hard to see every angle. Even if my instincts are telling me to walk away, I have a hard time cutting the anchor because I don’t want to ever be seen as “mean” or “bad.”

My insecurities often get the better of and have been used against me. But slowly I’m starting to emerge from my shell.

Maybe it’s getting older. You start to realize that not everyone has your best interest at heart. Some people like when you are in crisis because it fulfills their want to be needed. They feed off the drama.

They fill your head with half-truths and half-lies, making you believe things about yourself that you know aren’t true. They put a slant on every story in order in order to make themselves able to fit the role they’ve created.

For their story to work you have to be the antagonist or partner in crime because otherwise they will have to come face to face with themselves in the mirror.

It’s not easy to let go of the friendships, relationships and family loyalties that cause you pain.

But in the words of my friend Deb,

“If you need to cut ties, do it, and find those kind-like souls that can feed your spirit.”

The braver you are and recognize and remove those hurting you, the more room you have to be your true self and let the right people in who lift you up, not weigh you down.

Puppy Raisers Make World A Better Place

If you have ever spoken with a person who uses an assistance dog, you know that these dogs change lives. Whether it’s a PTSD dog helping a military person return to “regular life,” a hearing dog providing alerts to a person who cannot hear anything from the doorbell to a fire alarm, or a service dog providing aid to a person lacking mobility, these dogs are capable of miracles.

And what if you were offered the opportunity to be a part of one of those miracles? Most of us would certainly give the offer serious thought.

Last week was all about miracle workers, because it was International Assistance Dog Week (August 7-13), a week designated to honor service dogs and those who make those assistance dogs possible.

The teams of people needed to breed dogs, raise puppies, and train dogs satisfactorily to be service dogs are a hardworking lot, spread throughout the country, and they are affiliated with various service dog organizations.

More miracles, of course, are dependent on a bigger pipeline of puppies. As Katie Malatino, public relations coordinator for Canine Companions for Independence in Santa Rosa, California, says: “In order to provide more assistance dogs free of charge for people with disabilities, Canine Companions is gradually increasing the number of puppies in our program. Additional volunteers are a critical part of our mission.”

So how do you get involved? Organizations that train service dogs use all sorts of volunteers. People are needed to help with running events, taking a shift at a fair or a mall where the organization is distributing literature, and assisting with all kinds of tasks related to running a business.

But perhaps the most selfless volunteers of all are the people who become puppy raisers. They willingly take a dog into their homes for about sixteen months and agree to take the dog out with them on excursions at all times possible, take them regularly for training classes (in which the puppy raiser also participates), and do everything they can to help this dog become a service animal.

Puppy raisers always know that if they do their jobs well—and the dog’s temperament is right—the dog will go on to live with someone else, being their eyes or their ears or an extra pair of hands. And of course, the dogs will always be the person’s first alert in case of an emergency.
Puppy raisers may be losing a puppy they loved, but they will come as close humanly possible to helping bring about a miracle.

Heartbreaking to have to give up a puppy? Yes. Heartwarming to see that dog function at the highest level in making another person’s life better… you bet!

How Puppy Raisers Feel
Sondra Thiederman is now raising her tenth puppy for Canine Companions for Independence, and she loves doing it. “My most memorable moment was when I handed over the leash of a service dog I raised to the woman she is now assisting. I can only describe it as a profound feeling of ‘ rightness’ – as if something 100% positive was happening and that we were a part of something special.”

Another puppy raiser, Mary Milton, says she is having the time of her life as a puppy raiser. “It is such an honor and privilege to see how these assistance dogs really do help people with disabilities become more independent. It is life-changing for them.”

And a couple, Jolie and Gene Marzo, wrote in an email: “If we can help make someone’s life better by raising an assistance dog, then we are lucky and proud to do it. The person’s smile is all we need to keep us going!”

So are you tempted?

Double-Check Your Plan
Like any other type of volunteer work, you want to make sure you feel comfortable with the organization you contact. You also need to be sure that being an on-the-ground puppy raiser is for you.

To do this, check what assistance dog programs are in your area. Assistance Dogs International sets the standards for assistance dog training. By visiting their site, you can click on a map for your region of the country to see what programs might be near you. Visit, offer to do some onsite volunteering with them (that, too, is very much appreciated), and talk to puppy raisers.

Canine Companions, the largest nonprofit providing assistance dogs, has offices in many parts of the country, and some of their puppy raisers live far afield. However, getting to know an organization is certainly much easier if you have an opportunity to meet some of the people.

Once you have some programs to check out, visit their websites. The Canine Companions website has a list of responsibilities to which puppy raisers commit. Socialization—taking the dog out to experience all types of social situations and public environments—as well as attendance at local obedience classes are two elements that are vital to returning with a well-mannered dog who knows basic commands.

Another organization I have had recent contact with is Susquehanna Service Dogs, located in Pennsylvania. They want puppy raisers somewhat nearby as they provide training classes and veterinary care near their headquarters. In addition to puppy raisers, they keep a list of puppy sitters… people who are familiar with the program so that they can fill in for a day or a week or longer if puppy raiser needs to be away and can’t take the dog with them. This seems like a good way to test out whether full-time puppy raising is for you.

If you decide to apply to be a puppy raiser, you will have plenty of opportunity to have any additional questions answered during the application process.

More Dogs, More Miracles?
“If I hadn’t done this, I never would have had the joy of feeling that my efforts had, in fact, contributed to helping another human being live a more independent and productive life,” says puppy raiser Sondra Thiederman.

Susan Tyson of Susquehanna Service Dogs adds: “We’re changing people’s lives one dog at a time!”

To read about some of the lives that have been changed, see the story about Mary Hill, who needed to retire her first service dog so she is now one year into life with her new dog, or Professor John Terhorst, who teaches chemistry at Vanguard University and knows exactly why his students are always smiling in the classroom. There’s also Heather, a hearing dog, who makes Jeanne Glass’s life complete.

Also read about John Wiesniewski and his dog, Slate. Slate has helped two veterans who suffered symptoms of PTSD. There is also a story about a diabetic alert dog, Ija, who worked in the classroom with a teacher.

And many organizations have active facebook presences where you can keep up on the puppies and the progress with the people with whom they are eventually paired.

6 Ways The GOP Fails To Be Pro-Life

For my entire adult life, the standard line from Christian conservatives has been for people to vote their conscience. Groups like the American Family Association, Family Research Council, and Focus on the Family have put out voter guides each year for as long as I can remember, encouraging people to vote for the candidate who best reflected where the morals of a Christian politician should be. They have always decried the accusations of partisanship, but rather strictly about voting for the candidate who lined up with what they believed were Christian values about abortion, marriage equality, and inexplicably to me at least, gun rights and tax breaks. Vote your conscience has been in every election I’ve seen since I was old enough to vote in 1992, always amped up every four years when it’s time to elect a president. The subtext has always been that Christians should vote Republican, but it has been a standard line.

+++++

I watched last week’s Republican National Convention through the lens of late night talk show hosts and my Twitter and Facebook feeds. I did the same this week for much of the Democratic National Convention. I did watch Michelle Obama’s powerful speech, as well as the uplifting words from Senator Cory Booker, but for the most part political rah-rah’ing isn’t my idea of a good time. Catching up with America Ninja Warrior on Hulu after an evening hunting for Pokémon is far more my speed. Anger and dissension just wear me out.

There was a lot to take in at the RNC, but the one that rattled around in my mind the most was when Senator Ted Cruz was booed off of the stage as it became apparent he would not endorse Donald Trump, but rather said to the crowd, “Stand, and speak, and vote your conscience, vote for candidates up and down the ticket who you trust to defend our freedom and to be faithful to the Constitution.” This was met with roars of disapproval from the crowd in attendance.

I do understand that part of the job of the convention is to rally around the party’s nominee. To come together and present a united front, and the lack of an official, strong endorsement from a prime time speaker is surprising (though the speech was available to the RNC ahead of time). So I can see that some at the convention would be upset that a speaker would neglect that aspect. But barring the lack of an endorsement, the content of Cruz’s speech was lifted straight from the Republican platform. Close the borders. Beware of ISIS. States’ rights. Gun rights. Small government.

I may disagree with most of the policies presented in Cruz’s speech, but there is nothing in them that should cause a group of Republicans to boo. Only the mention that they should vote their conscience incited that reaction. Only the idea that voting your conscience might not lead you to vote in the way that stays within party lines.

The truth is, I’m a single issue voter. When I vote my conscience, it looks like one thing.

Voting for a candidate with a strong pro-life ethic. Which has, for most of my adult life, looked like voting for a Democrat rather than a Republican.

Yes, in the area of abortion, the Democrats often fail. In order to prove the value of the woman who is pregnant, the value of the life inside of her is devalued. Too often we see life only if it is desired – if not, it becomes an embryo, fetal tissue, a parasite. Abortion is a complex issue, but when we speak of a potential human without respect, we cheapen the cry of equality, especially in the eyes of those who call themselves pro-life.

But a pro-life ethic has to mean more than just where a candidate stands on abortion (though Donald Trump’s stand on abortion is fairly unclear).

A pro-life ethic must respect women. Donald Trump’s views of women are abhorrent. If you’re unable to see women as people deserving even a modicum of respect, you can’t be pro-life.

A pro-life ethic must listen to the voices of black men and women. The chants of All Lives Matter when confronted with the assertion that Black Lives Matter must end. Of course all lives matter. But black men and women matter as well, and much of our country’s history has belied that. Even Michelle Obama’s statement that she lives in a home built by slaves was met with a statement from conservative Bill O’Reilly saying, Sure, they were slaves, but it wasn’t that bad. A pro-life ethic can affirm that all lives matter while also saying that yes, black lives matter. Not with comments about “black on black crime” or “more white people are in jail” or “just listen to the police.” Instead, those of use who are not black need to shut up and listen. And then see how we can begin to change the system to make things more equal for our black brothers and sisters.

A pro-life ethic must respect those with disabilities. Donald Trump has openly mocked a journalist with disabilities. I mother several children on the autism spectrum. My heart would be broken if a public leader were to deride them publicly. We cannot offer lip service to a pro-life ethic and sit by while the Republican nominee has shown contempt in his actions for those with disabilities.

A pro-life ethic must encourage adoption. One of the ways that we encourage a pro-life ethic is to encourage people to adopt. The GOP platform reaffirms opposition to gay and lesbian couples adopting. My friend Sean and his husband have adopted two gorgeous boys (Sean has written about it in his best-selling book, Which One of You is the Mother?). They adopted children who were older. Children from difficult birth families. They adopted them, they love them, they parent them. Children who, if left in foster care, would have had a 45% chance of ending up homeless. Children who, if left in foster care, would have had a 75% chance of ending up in prison. Children who, because of their adoption by a gay couple, now have the chance to experience family.

A pro-life ethic must look at the ways life is cut short beyond abortion. Yes, I’m talking about guns. I am not a gun owner and I didn’t grow up in a house with guns, so I tend to speak very little on this issue, because I don’t know much about gun laws or the way that guns even work. But when Republicans block even research about gun violence, it is difficult for me to see that as caring about life. When a group covers their ears, refusing to even have a conversation about ways we can make life safer in a world with guns, I cannot call that group pro-life.

A pro-life ethic must see people, even our enemies, as people first. During his campaign, Donald Trump advocated war crimes when he suggested that the United States not only hunt down terrorists, but also “take out their families.” He has lumped all Muslims into the category of radical, calling for a ban on all Muslims entering the United States. He has painted with the broad brush that Mexican immigrants are rapists and murderers. Donald Trump has called vast swaths of non-white ethnicities our enemies, and then challenged their humanity. If an unborn child is a person, surely even those who seek to do us harm is are people as well.

In November, I will be voting my conscience, and it will be based on a pro-life ethic.

I hope you will do the same.

Democratic Delegates Applaud President Obama’s Legacy

PHILADELPHIA ― President Barack Obama, who began his presidential career as the victor of a divisive primary, may be ending it this year as the Democratic Party’s greatest unifier.

While the divisions between Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders supporters are still healing, few Democratic delegates in either camp had all that much negative to say about their outgoing president, who addressed the Democratic National Convention in an optimistic speech Wednesday night.

“I think he’s already made his mark on America,” said Percy Johnson, a Hillary Clinton delegate from Florida, who predicted Obama would be remembered as one of history’s most well-regarded presidents. “His legacy of course will be health care, LGBT rights, marriage equality. I think the other thing will be his footprint on the world ― that we don’t necessarily have to be the policeman of the world, that we can engage people through diplomacy.”

Jerome Thompson, a Sanders delegate from New York, pronounced himself “a big supporter of Obama.”

“There’s only a couple of things I’m not happy with, like the TPP,” he said, referring to the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade agreement. “But, you know, he brought health care to millions of Americans, and that’s a powerful accomplishment. He’s been keeping us safe from terror for the most part. He’s a very intelligent man, and he was up against a mighty brick wall. He accepted the challenge, and he did well. Wish we could have another four years.”

Obama acknowledged in his remarks that “we still have more work to do … for everyone who hasn’t yet felt the progress of these past seven and a half years.”

But he defended his legacy as a positive one, painting the upcoming election as a choice between “deeply pessimistic vision of a country” and an America “full of courage, and optimism and ingenuity.”

Democrats largely believe in the latter. While Americans as a whole are split on Obama’s record, members of his party say that his tenure has left the nation stronger internationally and improved economically. More than 80 percent of Democrats approve of Obama’s job performance, a number that has varied relatively little during his years as president.

Some of his supporters struggled to think of ways Clinton could improve on his legacy.

“Maybe she can do some things that he wasn’t able to with Congress blocking him at every turn,” said Helen Kyle, a Clinton backer from Virginia who lauded Obama’s expansion of health care.

Asked what specifically that might be, she said she “can’t honestly think of what that is.”

Does that mean he’s checked off everything on the list? “My list, anyway,” she said.

Others who felt Obama had fallen short in some way blamed it largely on Republican intransigence.

“Clearly he hasn’t been able to accomplish everything he wanted to do,” said Boyd Walker, a Sanders delegate from northern Virginia. “Close Guantanamo Bay, pull all the troops out of Afghanistan, I’m sure one of his biggest regrets is not being able to reform police departments … but it’s all because we have a Republican Congress.”

“I’d like to have seen him accomplish single-payer [health care], but the votes just weren’t there,” said Will T. Cheek, a superdelegate from Tennessee.

But outside the convention hall, not everyone is so unflaggingly enthusiastic about the state of the nation. Although positive views of Obama are on the rise, fewer than a quarter of Americans think that the country is on the right track, and the majority of voters expect that disaffection with the current government will benefit Donald Trump in November.

Mike Schweinsburg, a Sanders delegate, said that while he’d been “delighted” by Obama’s eight years in office, he didn’t want to see Clinton’s campaign paint her candidacy as a continuation of his presidency.

“That’s my biggest worry. The ascendancy of Bernie, and the only thing you can attribute the popularity of Donald Trump to is that the country wants change,” he said. “They do not want more of the same. They also don’t want anybody who’s establishment. She can’t get away from that. But she can get away from, oh, ‘This is a third term for Obama.’ She should herald his accomplishments and acknowledge his defeats, and say how she is going to make that difference.”

Florida Officials Find More Evidence Of Potential Local Zika Spread

By Julie Steenhuysen

CHICAGO (Reuters) – The Florida health department said on Wednesday it was investigating another two cases of Zika not related to travel to a place where the virus is being transmitted, raising the possibility of local Zika transmission in the continental United States.

The Florida health department said it has identified an additional case of Zika in Miami-Dade County, where it was already investigating a possible case of Zika not related to travel, and another case in Broward County, where it has been investigating a non-travel related case.

“Evidence is mounting to suggest local transmission via mosquitoes is going on in South Florida,” said CDC spokesman Tom Skinner said.

“These cases fit similar transmission patterns for mosquito-borne diseases such as Chikungunya that we’ve seen in South Florida in years past.”

To confirm whether Zika is being transmitted locally, epidemiologists must survey households and neighbors within a 150-yard radius around the residence of the person who has Zika, which constitutes the flying range of the mosquitoes that carry the virus.

According to the U.S. Zika response plan, Zika transmission is defined as two or more cases not due to travel or sex with an infected person that occur in a 1-mile diameter over the course of a month. Evidence of the virus in local mosquito populations can also be used to confirm local transmission.

Florida health department officials said investigations into the new cases begins today. The state is urging residents and visitors to participate in requests for urine samples by the department in the areas of investigation. These results will help the department determine the number of people affected.

In addition to the possible cases of non-travel related transmission, Florida on Wednesday reported 328 travel-related cases of Zika. The state is monitoring 53 pregnant women who had Zika infections.

Watch Hillary Clinton Break The Glass Ceiling

The Democratic National Convention began Tuesday night with Hillary Clinton becoming the first female presidential nominee of a major political party, and ended with Clinton breaking the glass ceiling. Sort of.

After showing a montage of the 43 men who have served as president, Clinton addressed the convention via live video, with her face emerging through shards of shattered glass on the video display.

Clinton acknowledged the historical significance of the occasion.

“What an incredible honor that you have given me,” she said in the video. “I can’t believe we just put the biggest crack in that glass ceiling yet. Thanks to you and to everyone who has fought so hard to make this possible. This is really your victory, this is really your night.

“And if there are any little girls out there who stayed up late to watch, let me just say I may become the first woman president, but one of you is next.”

Watch the full video above.

Now, on to today’s article…

(Questions have been modified for clarity and space.)

I need help breaking a cycle of behavior my family is stuck in. To explain, I’ll need to start with events from three years ago.

A that time, my younger sister, who was turning 18, was the victim of a violent crime that left her hospitalized. While she was in the hospital, our parents died, also as a result of violence.

Fast-forward to present day, and my sister, now in her early 20s, is in prison. This is her second trip there for drug-related offenses.

Given this situation, telephone calls with extended family members have become unbearable, because they follow the same script: They ask if I’ve heard how my sister is doing, and when I answer, they then launch into this whole thing about how they feel uncomfortable having a relationship with her, and how I should stay away from her too. This happens every time, without fail, often before they’ll ask how I’m doing.

This is not only frustrating but painful. I manage to go most days without thinking about the past, and I consider that a major victory. But having it brought up again just rips the scab off.

What I’ve tried to make my relatives understand is that it isn’t easy for me to write off my sister. She has no support system and is my last living immediate family member. But it doesn’t seem to matter.

I’m confused and frustrated, and I just want to break this pattern. What should I say to them?
–SatinSpectre; Marysville, OH

You should say everything you just said here: that you’re not going to abandon your sister; that these conversations are opening old wounds; and that something has to change.

I don’t know how many relatives you’re having these conversations with, but I’d make your stance clear to all of them. Pick the medium — phone call, email, whatever — that will allow you to express yourself directly and completely. Tell them that while you want them in your life (assuming you do), their presence is doing more harm than good.

If they care about and respect you, they’ll listen. And once they do, there’s a progression you can follow to ensure they continue to.

First, if they bring up your sister in the future, cut them off immediately, reminding them that’s not a path you want to go down. Don’t let their transgression pass without acknowledgement. It’s like correcting a dog that’s humping your teddy bear — you have to correct them in the moment.

Do this enough, and it should (steadily) regulate their behavior. If it doesn’t, at some point, you’ll want to consider building stronger boundaries. And that might mean cutting off contact completely.

I’m guessing the last thing you want to do is lose more family, but when you think about it, if things don’t change, why would you want to keep talking to these people? What good comes from it? They ignore your wishes and inflict nothing but pain and heartache. How is that helping you?

That’s a last-resort option, of course, but one worth stashing in your back pocket. Because what’s most important is that you do what’s best for you.

Between your sister’s destruction and your parents’ passing, you’ve been dealt a hand that could be generously described as devastating. And while you consider it a “major victory” that you rarely think about the past, that doesn’t mean your past didn’t happen and that it can no longer impact you.

It is impacting you, if in no other way than sabotaging your relationships with your extended family. It’s understandable that you don’t want to talk about it with them, but please talk about it with someone.

I’m no expert, but the aftermath of this trauma has got to be rolling around your psyche, affecting how you go through life. You wouldn’t be human if it weren’t. It’s a ticking time bomb, and the best thing you can do is start defusing it before it blows up.

What Every Parent Needs To Know About Their Kid’s Respiratory Habits

Part of Your Smile, Your Health™ Series, a division of Sleep Fitness, LLC
Co-authored by Keelyn Ross

What are the benefits of nasal breathing?

There is a right way to breathe and a wrong way to breathe. The right way is through the nose, the wrong way is through the mouth. Nasal breathing benefits the body on multiple levels because the nose is super equipped to process incoming air. The nose has a built-in humidifier and filtration system, so when air enters through the nasal passages, it’s warmed and moistened. It is also equipped to sense and destroy harmful bacteria before it enters the body. This means the respiratory system is being supplied with high quality air, which leads to cellular health. Conversely, the mouth will not purify the air before entering the body such that higher amounts of carbon dioxide create a toxic environment. Mouth breathing also causes a lack of oxygen to the brain, which could lead to underdevelopment, and possibly sensory or auditory disorders, such as autism or attention deficit disorder (ADD). This is why it is paramount for everyone, especially new parents, to understand the importance of their child forming good breathing habits.

What are the long-term consequences of chronic mouth breathing?

If someone develops a mouth breathing habit during their developmental years, they are unknowingly programming their body to have a small, set back jaw, a tiny chin and a long face. This is because bones grow in the position they’re ‘trained to’. If the mouth is open, the entire bone and neuromuscular development follows in suit. Besides aesthetic considerations, that same person most likely suffers from temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD), commonly referred to as TMJ, meaning their upper and lower jaw do not close in a balanced fashion. This often leads to crooked teeth, chronic headaches and respiratory distress.

5 Characteristics of Mouth Breathing

1. Small & weak looking jaw
2. Forward head posture
3. Lip incompetency (unable to seal)
4. Small, dysfunctional nostrils
5. Underdeveloped or set back jaw

Are there at-home steps parents can take to ensure their child breathes through their nose?

Yes! Make sure they do not suck their thumb, clench or grind their teeth. You can also incorporate a technique developed by Dr. K. Buteyko called mouth taping, where surgical paper tape is placed over the mouth while sleeping, ensuring the child is breathing through their nose at night. There are also a variety of yoga breathing exercises that focus on correct and controlled breathing. Last but not least, teaming up with a myofunctional orofacial therapist can teach your child exercises they can do at home.

Note: Please consult with your healthcare physician before moving forward with any medical advice.

What about the kids who suffer from chronic sinus infections?

Board-certified otolaryngologists who sub-specialize in sleep medicine will assess the respiratory needs of the child and advise the best course of action for them to adequately breathe. Board-certified dentists who sub-specialize in sleep medicine will also be able to assess the anatomy and function of the child’s craniofacial development and offer treatment solutions. Some dentists have in-house myofunctional orofacial therapists who ensure the child’s neuromuscular development is on par with correct anatomical functioning.

The Boy from Baby House 10

The Boy from Baby House 10

In 1990, a young boy afflicted with cerebral palsy was born, prematurely, in Russia. His name was Vanya. His mother abandoned him to the state childcare system and he was sent to a bleak orphanage called Baby House 10. Once there, he entered a nightmare world he was not to leave for more than eight years. Housed in a ward with a group of other children, he was clothed in rags, ignored by most of the staff and given little, if any, medical treatment. He was finally, and cruelly, confined for a time to a mental asylum where he lived, almost caged, lying in a pool of his own waste on a locked ward surrounded by psychotic adults. But, that didn’t stop Vanya. Even in these harsh conditions, he grew into a smart and persistent young boy who reached out to everyone around him. Two of those he reached out toSarah Philps, the wife of a British journalist, and Vika, a young Russian womanrealized that Vanya was no ordinary child and they began a campaign to find him a home. After many twists and turns, Vanya came to the attention of a single woman living in the United States named Paula Lahutsky. After a lot of red tape and more than one miracle, Paula adopted Vanya and brought him to the U.S. where he is now known as John Lahutsky, an honors student at Freedom High School in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania and a member of the Boy Scouts of America Order of the Arrow. In The Boy From Baby House 10 , Sarah’s hus band, Alan Philps, helps John Lahutsky bring this inspiring true-life story of a small boy with a big heart and an unquenchable will to readers everywhere.

Donald Trump Reminds Me Of Vladimir Putin — And That Is Terrifying

Donald Trump’s dark and frightening speech at the Republican National Convention on Thursday had pundits and historians making comparisons ranging from George Wallace in the 1960s to Benito Mussolini in the 1930s. As suitable as those comparisons may be, the chill that ran down my spine was not because of Trump’s echoes of old newsreel footage. Instead, I saw an Americanized version of the brutally effective propaganda of fear and hatred that Vladimir Putin blankets Russia with today.

11 Ways To Instantly Connect With Anyone

2016-07-21-1469128595-7816956-HowToInstantlyConnectWithAnyoneHP.jpg

Too many people succumb to the mistaken belief that the ability to connect with others is a natural, unteachable trait that belongs to only a lucky few. It’s easy to fall prey to this misconception. In reality, this ability is under your control, and it’s a matter of emotional intelligence (EQ).

Research conducted by Matthew Lieberman at UCLA shows that being social and connecting with others is as fundamental a human need as food, shelter, and water. For example, Lieberman discovered that we feel social pain, such as the loss of a relationship, in the same part of the brain that we feel physical pain.

The primary function of this brain area is to alert us to threats to our survival. It makes you realize how powerful and important social connection is. We’re hard wired to be social creatures.

“The most basic of all human needs is the need to understand and be understood.” -Ralph Nichols

MRIs of the brain show that social thinking and analytical thinking involve entirely different neural networks and that they operate something like a seesaw. When you engage in analytical thinking, the social part of your brain quiets down, but as soon as you’re finished, the social network springs back to life.

The social brain is the end of the seesaw where the fat kid sits; it’s our brain’s default setting.

Given that social connection is such a fundamental human need, you’d think that it would be easy to connect with everyone we meet. Unfortunately, that’s not the case. Against our own self-interest, we get bogged down by shyness, self-consciousness, cynicism, pride, competitiveness, jealousy, and arrogance.

If you can get that baggage out of the way, you can connect with anyone–even those who are still holding on to their own. Here are some tips that will help you to connect instantly with everyone you meet.

1. Leave a strong first impression. Most people decide whether or not they like you within the first seven seconds of meeting you. They then spend the rest of the conversation internally justifying their initial reaction. This may sound terrifying, but by knowing this, you can take advantage of it to connect with anyone.

First impressions are tied intimately to positive body language. Becoming cognizant of your gestures, expressions, and tone of voice (and making certain they’re positive) will draw people to you like ants to a picnic. Using an enthusiastic tone, uncrossing your arms, maintaining eye contact, and leaning towards the person who’s speaking are all forms of positive body language that high-EQ people use to draw others in. Positive body language can make all the difference in a conversation. It’s true that how you say something can be more important than what you say.

2. Be the first to venture beyond the superficial. Our first conversation or two with a new acquaintance tends to be pretty superficial. We portray a careful picture of ourselves, and we stick to nice, safe topics. We talk about the weather and people we know in common and share the most basic details about ourselves. But if you really want to connect with somebody, try upping the ante and revealing the real you. You don’t need to get too personal, but it’s important to let the other person know what you’re passionate about. Most of the time, if you open up, the other person will follow your lead and do the same.

3. Ask good questions. If the other person seems hesitant to open up, encourage them to do so by asking substantial questions. “What do you do?” doesn’t further the relationship nearly as much as, “Why did you choose your profession?” Search for questions that will help you to understand what makes the other person tick, without getting too personal.

4. Learn from them. In the course of his research, Lieberman concluded that our educational system would be much more effective if we tapped into the social side of learning, rather than trying to squash it. For example, the best way to help an eighth-grader struggling with math would be to have him get help from another student. Apply that same principle to your life, and be willing to learn from the person you’re trying to connect with. Not only does that make them feel more bonded to you, it makes them feel important. It also shows that you’re willing to be vulnerable and aren’t too proud to admit that you have much to learn.

5. Don’t make them regret removing the mask. If your new acquaintance does you the honor of opening up, don’t make them regret it. Sarcasm, criticism, or jokes that might make the other person feel judged for what they’ve shared are major faux paus. Instead, empathize with their approach to life, which you can do even if you don’t agree with their beliefs, and then reciprocate by revealing more about yourself.

6. Look for the good in them. Our culture can often predispose us toward cynicism. We seem to focus on finding reasons not to like people instead of reasons to like them. Shut that cynical voice off, and concentrate on looking for the good in a new acquaintance. For one thing, that keeps you from writing someone off too soon, but more importantly, when you expect the best from people, they’re likely to deliver it.

7. Smile. People naturally (and unconsciously) mirror the body language of the person they’re talking to. If you want people to like you, smile at them during a conversation and they will unconsciously return the favor and feel good about you as a result.

8. Use their name. Your name is an essential part of your identity, and it feels terrific when people use it. You shouldn’t use someone’s name only when you greet them. Research shows that people feel validated when the person they’re speaking with refers to them by name during a conversation. When you meet someone, don’t be afraid to ask their name a second time if you forget it right after you hear it. You’ll need to keep their name handy if you’re going to remember it the next time you see them.

9. Follow the platinum rule. We all know the golden rule, and it’s pretty easy to follow. The platinum rule is harder to follow because it requires us to treat people the way they want to be treated. Not only does doing so make the other person more comfortable–and therefore more likely to open up–but it also proves that you’ve been listening and have really heard what they’ve been telling you. And that shows extra effort on your part.

10. Don’t make it a contest. We’ve all seen the stereotypical sit-com scene where two guys in a bar spend the night trying to one-up each other. The same thing happens when you meet someone new. Their accomplishments and life experience sneak up on you and make you feel the urge to make yourself look just as good (if not better). Doing so may stroke your ego, but it doesn’t help you to connect with them. It keeps you focused on yourself when you should be trying to learn about them and find common ground.

11. Turn off your inner voice. One giant thing that keeps us from connecting with other people is that we don’t really listen. Instead, we’re thinking while the other person is talking. We’re so focused on what we’re going to say next or how what the other person is saying is going to affect us down the road that we fail to hear what’s really being said. The words come through loud and clear, but the meaning is lost.

You must turn off this inner voice if you want to connect deeply with people. So what if you forget what you were going to say or if the conversation moves in a different direction before you have a chance to make your point. If your real goal is to connect with a person, you have to shut off your own soundtrack long enough to focus on what they’re telling you.

Bringing It All Together

The good news is that we’re programmed to connect with each other; we just keep getting in our own way. Try these tips the next time you meet someone new, and watch a superficial conversation turn into a real connection.

Alcohol Is Even Deadlier Than You Think, Study Suggests

A new study suggests that alcohol is a direct cause of cancer in several areas of the body.

The study, published Thursday in the scientific journal Addiction, consists of a major review of 10 years’ worth of studies from several organizations, including the World Cancer Research Fund, the American Institute for Cancer Research and the International Agency for Research on Cancer.

And its conclusions are dire.

Nearly 6 percent of cancer deaths worldwide can be linked to alcohol, including in people who drink light to moderate amounts of alcohol, the study concludes. “From a public health perspective, alcohol is estimated to have caused approximately half a million deaths from cancer in 2012,” wrote study author Jennie Connor, a professor of epidemiology at the University of Otago in New Zealand.

The study determined that there is a strong link between alcohol consumption and cancer in specific areas of the body, such as the liver, colon, esophagus and female breast. There are also causal contributions in other areas such as the prostate, pancreas and skin.

How alcohol causes cancer is not deeply understood, according to the study, but it is thought to depend on the “target organ.” For example, cancers of the throat, mouth and liver can be largely attributed to a carcinogenic compound called acetaldehyde. Salivary acetaldehyde levels have been found to reach high levels when drinking.

Breast tissue is another area that seems to be particularly susceptible to alcohol.

Connor noted the United Kingdom’s Million Women Cohort study, which found that women who drank 70 to 140 grams of alcohol per week experienced a 13 percent increase in breast cancer and a 5 percent increase in total cancer compared to those who drank less than 20 grams per week.

Unfortunately, the amount you drink might not matter all that much. While heavy drinkers have a higher risk of liver, colon and laryngeal cancer than light drinkers, all drinkers have the same risk of mouth, esophagus, breast and pharynx cancer.

Connor also acknowledges that some of the studies she reviewed show that those who drink light to moderate of alcohol have a reduced risk of developing cardiovascular disease than abstainers.

But many epidemiologists agree that research confirms alcohol actually causes cancer, Connor wrote, while the relationship between drinking and heart disease is not as conclusive.

For example, other lifestyle factors beyond alcohol consumption ― such as a person’s healthy behavior and demographic conditions ― typically put abstainers at a higher risk than those who moderately drink. Connor cites a 2005 study that showed 27 out of 30 risk factors for cardiovascular disease were more prevalent in abstainers than moderate drinkers.

“Promotion of health benefits from drinking at moderate levels is seen increasingly as disingenuous or irrelevant in comparison to the increase in risk of a range of cancers,” she wrote in the study.

As a solution to alcohol-attributed cancer, Connor suggests everyone should reduce their alcohol consumption, not just heavy drinkers.

“Population-wide reduction in alcohol consumption will have an important effect on the incidence of [cancer], while targeting the heaviest drinkers alone has limited potential,” she wrote in the study.

However, most people today are hesitant to adapt to the facts. While the majority of the population readily accepts that smoking causes lung cancer, “alcohol’s causal role is perceived to be more complex than tobacco’s,” Connor wrote.

For this reason, simply getting people to stop drinking to prevent cancer ― as many have done in the case of smoking ― is broadly considered unacceptable.

Connor also warns of the backlash that research such as her own may receive from alcohol companies.

“There will be orchestrated attempts to discredit the science and the researchers, and to confuse the public,” she wrote. “The stakes are high for alcohol industries when there is no argument, on current evidence, for a safe level of drinking with respect to cancer.”

Ultimately, alcohol is just one of many factors that can cause cancer, but Connor’s study suggests reducing consumption or even partaking in a “dry period” as steps in the right direction to reduce your risk.

This Is How: Proven Aid in Overcoming Shyness, Molestation, Fatness, Spinsterhood, Grief, Disease, Lushery, Decrepitude & More. For Young

Amazon Best Books of the Month, May 2012: In writing and in life, Augusten Burroughs has repeatedly summoned the courage to grab the wolves of his past by their foaming muzzles and peer into their wild eyes until he owns them–and because of this, he’s survived nearly every horrific experience a person in a modern-day, first-world country could face and emerged as an astonishingly well-adjusted person. After turning his profoundly messed-up early life and its alcoholic aftermath into six harrowing, uplifting memoirs–including Running with Scissors and Dry–Burroughs lost interest in writing about himself. He kept meeting people who were locked in the same struggles he’d overcome and decided they needed to know they had options for fixing their lives. In This Is How, Burroughs delivers prescriptions for handling life’s most pernicious problems. Don’t let the snake-oil-salesmannish title put you off: this is raw, hard-knock-life advice, veering from brutal to hilarious to deeply compassionate. Burroughs doesn’t really believe in “happiness” or “healing.” He’s honest about the limits of recovery, but even those in the depths of despair will be energized by his exhortations to claw their way back to OK, even if it means leaving the life they’ve known in the dust. –Mari Malcolm

Prime-Time RNC Speaker Claims Obama Is ‘Absolutely’ A Muslim

Antonio Sabato Jr., featured as a prime-time speaker Monday night at the Republican National Convention, said President Barack Obama is “absolutely” a Muslim.

Speaking to ABC News after his convention speech, the actor and former underwear model claimed “we had a Muslim president for seven and a half years.”

“I don’t believe the guy is a Christian,” Sabato said. “I don’t believe the guy follows the God that I love and the Jesus that I love. If you follow his story, if you understand about Obama, I mean, that’s not a Christian name, is it?”

When ABC’s Amna Nawaz noted that Obama attends church regularly, Sabato continued to assert that he is not a Christian.

“I have met a lot of Christians, know a lot of Christians. I am one, and I don’t believe he is,” Sabato continued. “I believe that he’s on the other side.”

Asked to elaborate, Sabato said that he meant “the Middle East, the bad side.”

“We had a Muslim president for seven and a half years,” he said.

“You believe President Obama is a Muslim?” Nawaz asked.

“Absolutely, absolutely,” Sabato responded.

GOP presumptive nominee Donald Trump, a renowned conspiracy theorist, has repeatedly questioned Obama’s birthplace and faith.

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims ― 1.6 billion members of an entire religion ― from entering the U.S.

He’s Not A White Knight — He’s A Human Being

Society says:

Men are not allowed to be weak.

Men do not feel as deeply as women.

Men do not have emotional attachments to sex.

Men are fearless and courageous.

Men are here to save the day, the damsel and the world!

Today I am throwing my hands up in the air and saying e-nough!

With thoughts and stigmas like this, relationships are doomed before they even start.
It’s time we put an end to the emotional imprisonment of men.

Unless we stop seeing our men through a distorted lens, we will always feel disappointed and as if he’s not enough.

Ladies, he’s not a White Knight, he’s a human being. He’s not perfect; he’s flawed. Just as we are.

As much as the big screen likes to repeatedly demonstrate the amazing, enlightened, self-aware man rescuing the damsel at just the perfect moment, it’s a rare occurrence in real life.

For Pete’s sake, Ladies, we have to stop this nonsensical belief once and for all.

Gender Differences – Real or Not Real

There are very few gender lines I allow into my beliefs and the ones I do are mostly hormone or physiologically based. There are many books out there claiming males and females are very different and we must understand one another in order to get along.

I am publicly willing to stand in disagreement with this for many reasons. (But that’s for another blog)

At the core level, the absolute deepest level of our being, we are souls. Souls that are a magnificent balance of masculine and feminine energies. Souls that came here to experience a physical body and the material world. At our very core, we are Spirit in human form.

All of us.

We may have chosen to experience the form of male or female, but our purpose for being here is the same. We are no different from one another. We are here to learn and grow closer to our Higher Self (God-Self) while existing in human form.

When we understand we are dealing with another soul housed in a male body, we can acquire a deeper understanding and appreciation for our partner that has the capacity to heal our fractured relationships.

Giving What You Are Expecting

I absolutely believe if we lose the White Knight stigma we’ve attached to our men and start looking at them from a new perspective, relationships en masse would dramatically improve!

2016-07-18-1468874361-2893789-whiteknight.PNG

Although I cannot speak to all relationships as there are too many individual and unique dynamics in play, I believe those of you who were drawn to this article possess the ability to alter the state of your partnerships by viewing your man through a clearer lens.

You can start by asking yourself this question:

Am I giving to my man what I am expecting from him?

If I’ve seen it once, I’ve seen it a hundred times. Women expecting to be nurtured, supported, caressed, complimented, made passionate love to (and the list goes on), but they’re unwilling to do those things for their man.

Somewhere along the way they chose to believe it’s the man’s job, not theirs.

By putting such lopsided expectations are on our men, we create an atmosphere of perpetual lack and resentment.

Frankly, you are putting the entire relationship in the hands of your partner and by golly, that’s an incredible burden for anyone to bear!

Ladies, he can show up for you. He can hold your hand. He can love you and respect you, but you have an equally important role in the relationship’s success.

No one person can nurture the relationship alone. Happy, healthy relationships require both parties equally contributing to the healing and becoming of their partner.

What He’s Not Saying

In my past, I had the belief that the man was supposed to fill the cracks of my broken heart. That my heart was the only fragile one in the room and the right man would know exactly how to make me feel safe and loved.

I was left disappointed every time until one day I looked deeper into the eyes and soul of the person I was putting my expectations on.

I discovered he was just as afraid as I was and his heart equally as fragile.

My entire life changed when I began to view men from a different perspective.

I started to see what the men in my life were not saying rather than what they were saying. I saw their fears and I heard their inaudible cries for love. I didn’t tell them what I saw, I simply began approaching interactions with them differently – with love rather than expectation.

The responses that came were remarkable. Softness replaced hardness. Kindness replaced anger. Gratitude replaced bitterness. Appreciation replaced expectation.

It was a miracle.

2016-07-18-1468873875-7792811-whiteknight2.PNG

Your man needs your love, attention, support, understanding and encouragement as much as you need it from him. He has his own store of false beliefs and fears just as you do. He is not exempt from the human experience just because he sports a penis.

Most men won’t display their needs openly as they have been taught not to.

It’s up to us to know that as human beings men experience the same emotions, fears and weaknesses as women do. If we want to experience the wonders of a reciprocally loving relationship, we need to step up and do our part.

And with this beautiful shift in perception, you will become the person he’s always needed in his life – his soft place to fall. You will become his trusted companion, the one who knows and understands him like no other.

2016-07-18-1468873812-2537940-whiteknight1.PNG

You will be the reason he becomes all that he is meant to be and the reason he will protect his kingdom at all costs.

He will become the White Knight you’ve always dreamed about simply because you love him for all that he is.

Brilliant Hospital Gowns Help Teen Patients Feel Like Themselves

For hospitalized teens, wearing the same drab gown day after day can be not only boring but seriously dehumanizing.

That’s why Starlight Children’s Foundation Canada came up with the simple but brilliant idea to create hospital gowns that teens would actually want to wear. The recently launched WARD + ROBES program allows each teen to pick out a gown that suits them, allowing them to feel less like a patient and more like the unique individuals they are.

“When you can’t wear what you want, you feel like you’re not who you should be, or you’re just your illness or you’re just … a hospital patient,” a teen says in a video produced by the foundation.

In the video, the foundation presents the unique gowns to a group of teens at the hospital ― and when each patient finds one that suits their personal style, their eyes light up.

I was amazed to watch the teens walk in in their standard issue gowns and get super excited that they could go to this rack of robes and pick something that felt more like them,” Trevor Dicaire, senior vice president of development at Starlight Children’s Foundation Canada, told Upworthy.

To create a wide range of designs to fit each patient’s style, the foundation enlisted the help of creatives including fashion designer Izzy Camilleri and tattoo artist India Amara. And now that the program is up and running, the foundation is inviting anyone to submit a design.

The gowns shown in the video range from simple to elaborate, with patterns and materials such as camouflage, animal print and lace.

Each gown includes a tag with a very important message: “You’re unique. Why should your gown be any different?”

If you want to donate to the program, you can do so here.

H/T Upworthy

Donald Trump Says He’s Raised $51 Million. The Actual Numbers Are Starting To Come In.

WASHINGTON ― Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump says he raised $ 51 million in conjunction with the Republican National Committee and state party organizations in June, his first full month of fundraising from donors.

Unknown when he announced this haul last week was how it would be split between his campaign, the RNC, and special RNC accounts that can’t be used for the 2016 election.

Thanks to two campaign finance filings on Friday, the breakdown of the funds is becoming clearer.

Trump Victory, the joint fundraising committee linking the Trump campaign, the RNC and 11 state parties, raised $ 25.7 million in June and the final week of May. The Trump Make America Great Again Committee, a joint fundraising committee linking the Trump campaign and the RNC, raised $ 6.7 million over the same time period.

So far, the Trump Victory campaign has transferred only $ 2.2 million to the Trump campaign. Another $ 10.1 million was transferred to the RNC, but only $ 4.3 million of that is available for the RNC’s general election fund. The rest is split between three special party accounts ― convention, building and legal ― that were created by the Republican-controlled Congress in the 2014 omnibus budget bill. The convention account got $ 3.3 million, the building account got $ 1.5 million, and the legal account got $ 1 million. The committee ended the month with $ 12 million in undistributed funds.

The Trump Make America Great Again Committee has not yet distributed its funds to either the Trump campaign or the RNC. It appears that nearly all, if not all, of its $ 6.7 million in contributions will wind up in the Trump campaign’s coffers. This is because the largest contributions are $ 5,400, the maximum a donor can give to the Trump campaign. Every dollar over $ 5,400 would rebound to the RNC. The Trump Make America Great Again Committee was one vehicle the Trump campaign used to raise small-donor funds online, and it shows. The majority of its funds ― $ 4.3 million ― were raised from donors giving under $ 200.

Overall, the two joint fundraising committees raised $ 32.6 million ― $ 18.4 million short of Trump’s announced $ 51 million. That difference could have all been raised by Trump’s campaign. Or not.

It is Trump, after all.

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims ― 1.6 billion members of an entire religion ― from entering the U.S.

2016-07-15-1468620026-5807673-1400415_10154064214148711_917411793151883215_o.jpg

Thank you for the love letter. Thank you for the lengthy text message you wrote me from a space of total vulnerability. You hit send hoping for the best as your heart rested anxiously on your sleeve awaiting my text back. Thank you for the crumpled up piece of paper that you ran to give me on the beach, leaving your lifeguard tower abandoned for a split second so as to not miss the chance to ask me out. Thank you for the ride home from yoga. I know it took a lot of guts to ask me on a date just a breath before I closed the car door shut. Your cheeks were bright red as you grasped the steering wheel. But you did it, you faced your fear and made the ask.

I may have turned you down but I didn’t ignore you and I was polite, gracious, and compassionate in my response. I realize that it’s not what you were hoping to hear but I thanked you. I thanked for your sincerity and I meant it when I said that I was humbled by the effort. I see how you show up for love and it’s the same I see in me. Believe me when I say that I know how you feel.

There was the time that I went to the other side of the country to surprise you at your concert, palms sweaty in the back of the venue as I awaited the imminent moment that I’d say, “Hi! I came to see you because I care, I’ve missed you and I really like you.” Remember when I sent you that tiny box with a gemstone in it to protect you on your travels? Or what about when I left you a flower under your windshield wiper?

I’m the not-so-secret admirer just like you.

Whenever my romantic actions result in a “turn down” I don’t let it get me down. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to be bold and tear down any walls of fear that existed around being rejected. I know I did the right thing by stepping forward and diving into it.
Disappointment can last a minute but regret can last a lifetime.

When I receive your old-school love letter, your authentic compliment in line at Whole Foods, your poem and your nervous ask, know that I see and understand you. I may not say “yes” but I’ll tell you thank you. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. It’s easy to hide behind technology as we explore our hearts that are seeking to connect but It’s not easy to show up in person. If we desire something or someone, it’s our actions that will propel us to a result. Some of the most treasured words to me are those spoken by Mahatma Gandhi,

“Your beliefs become your thoughts,
Your thoughts become your words,
Your words become your actions,
Your actions become your habits,
Your habits become your values,
Your values become your destiny.”

Thank you for the love letter, the art you made me, the authentic compliment, and for asking a stranger to dinner. I hope that you’ll receive this love letter back to you:

Dear Fellow Romantic,

Please keep showing up for life like you’ve been. Don’t let a “no” or even silence jade you. It’s you who sees the rose and it’s you who gets to smell her enchanting aroma. With eyes wide open continue to see, feel and express your deep experience of the world because that will inspire others to dive into their fears instead of letting fear block destiny. The more you show up for life in full expression of your hopes and dreams, the more that life will become your dream come true. It’s the romantics that see the glass half full. So please, beautiful soul, never become jaded. Always write love letters and always be able to receive them with grace, compassion, and a warm thank you.

With Love,
Alicia

The Kind Flexitarian

2016-07-16-1468631710-5276425-1280x720Mv0.jpg

The term “flexitarian” has been coined to describe someone who eats a primarily whole food, plant-based diet, but also sneaks in a big of meat every now and again. Celebrity cookbook author and chef, Mark Bittman, uses this term, and has recently moved away from a meat-centric diet. His new schtick is that he’s strictly vegan all day long, and in the evening he eats whatever he wants. I find this a little odd from a health perspective because if you’re going to toss a big grass-fed steak down your gullet, you’re much better off eating it at lunch time when your body has the rest of the day to digest it/work it off. But moving on from the Mark Bittman (who I love), I’m seeing flexitarians cropping up everywhere here in LA – almost as many as the Paleo crowd. And both groups of “health conscious” eaters are eating meat – in the case of Paleo’s, a LOT of meat. However, are they really “conscious”?

I personally choose not to eat animal flesh. I totally used to. Actually, I include a bunch of meat recipes in my second book (The Gorgeously Green Diet 2009), and do a deep dive into the benefits of truly grass-fed (as opposed to grass-finished) meat. But over the past 5 years I’ve changed. I’ve realized that I don’t need to eat animal flesh to be healthy, and that in many ways I am healthier, stronger, and more energetic without. I’ve also become a way more “conscious” eater in that I really think long and hard about how every mouthful is produced, and in the case of animals, I just couldn’t deny that fact that animal welfare doesn’t get taken into consideration 99.9% of the time (even when it’s implied that it does). I don’t call myself a vegan, because it’s a label (not a big fan of labels), and I do (very occasionally) eat a little fish.

I am totally NON-JUDGEMENTAL of people who enjoy eating meat, so if you are one of them, please don’t stop reading. My entire family are meat-eaters, and so I’ve learned to live and let live. I’m also not opposed to handling or cooking meat for those who must eat it – like my 15 year-old daughter who says she will NEVER not eat meat. It’s kind of the reverse of the many teens who, much to their parent’s consternation, suddenly go vegan. Since I’m a total health nut, my daughter delights in seeing my reaction to her tucking into a box of Fruity Pebbles (not the Whole Foods healthy version either).

But my reason for writing this post about a kind flexitarian is because I was invited to a private screening of the recently released film, At The Fork. It’s a beautifully crafted documentary about exactly how animals are raised for human consumption in America. It is non-judgmental, sensitive, and deep – really DEEP. The filmmaker/director John Papola is a meat-eater, and his wife, Lisa, is not. The film opens with John’s family tearing into huge racks of beef ribs, hot off the grill – an annual family tradition. His wife loads her plate with veggies. Husband and wife make clear their individual stances on meat-eating, and off they go to explore how our meat is produced.

I brought my meat-eating (only about once a week if that, cos I’m hard on his case), husband to the screening. After the film we stayed to participate in the panel, where John Mackey, the CEO of Whole Foods Market (who was involved in the film), sat with the director and producers to answer questions. We then went out for a fantastic vegan meal!!!

So, what was my main takeaway? The film made me cry a number of times. They feature a lot of pigs. I love pigs, and because I was raised around them, I know that they are highly intelligent. The film also made me laugh – there were some beautiful and very funny moments. Unlike so many of the meat-bashing documentaries out there (designed to turn everyone in vegans overnight), this film doesn’t bash anyone over the head. The director John, is brazenly honest, and openly discusses his struggle about forgetting the suffering he might have just witnessed at an appalling factory farm, once a few days have gone by – and especially when faced with the smell of a delicious burger or steak on the grill. His wife is devastated by the fact that he seems not to have the same lasting sense of compassion as she does – and this conflict runs throughout the film. I like that it’s not resolved either. This makes the film more appealing to a way larger audience, which is the intention. No point preaching to the choir, right?

I love the fact that Temple Grandin is in the movie throughout. She’s been a huge advocate of designing compassionate slaughterhouses – an oxymoron I KNOW, but one that she explains in great detail. If the animals are going to be killed, at least don’t put them into abject terror on their way. I think that was the most upsetting part of the film: seeing how terrified the animals were as they were separated from their herd and shoved into crowded trucks headed for the slaughterhouse. Incidentally, the director doesn’t show any animals actually being slaughtered in the movie – a wise decision because we stay watching, rather than turn away. This is not a horror movie!

The panel was very interesting. Here’s something that I didn’t know about John Mackey: He used to eat meat (and clearly sells it in his markets). But, he is now vegan. In an interview in Men’s Journal, he explains: “I became a vegan in 2003, after a woman interrupted the Whole Foods annual meeting to tell us how bad ducks were treated. We had a big argument, but then we started an email correspondence and she challenged me to learn more. That summer I probably read a dozen books on animal welfare. What shocked me the most was the phenomenon of factory farming — animals endure terrible lives of abuse and suffering — and it’s hidden away. After reading the books, I knew too much to keep eating meat. Remember The Matrix? Take the blue pill or the red pill? I didn’t want to go back to sleep.”

But he also acknowledges that only 1% of the population are vegan, so to run a viable business on the scale of Whole Foods Market, he had to continue selling meat. To this end, he has spearheaded the 5-Step Animal Welfare Standards label. He explained to us that not only does this allow customers to really understand how the animals they are buying were treated, but it also encourages animal producers to get kinder and cleaner. They can all charge top dollar for a Step 5+, so they are starting to make big changes.

This brings me to my final thought in this discourse. If you want to be a kinder flexitarian, and eat/buy meat that is good quality, and from an animal who hasn’t suffered for its entire life, you will have to pay more. Organic, humanely-reared meat is very expensive. I see this as a positive because Americans eat way too much cheap meat. This kind of mass meat consumption is linked to all the number one killer diseases, and inflicts untold suffering on the animals involved – a big LOSS for all involved. I think it’s time to open our eyes. At The Fork certainly helps pull back the curtain on the unpalatable truth. I highly recommend you try to see it. If it’s not playing near you, they will help you organize a showing for your community, school, church or neighborhood.

And, finally, why not join the their 21-day challenge. All you need do is sign up with your email, and they will send you a daily plant-based/higher welfare recipe from all kinds of celebrity chefs, as well as shopping guides, articles, and more. You can also like the At The Fork Facebook page.

I also encourage you to try some of the plethora of plant-based recipes on my blog.

No exceptions to equal protection

Co-authored by Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney

One month after a deadly attack against the LGBT community in Orlando, Republican Leadership in the House of Representatives will mark this week’s anniversary in an ugly way: by considering a piece of legislation that would bar the federal government from taking action when individuals or businesses attempt to deny, discriminate against or otherwise dehumanize LGBT Americans.

Beneath the partisan politicking that will undoubtedly capture headlines as the so-called First Amendment Defense Act (FADA) is given a hearing this week, there is an eerily familiar argument: the religious beliefs of some can trump the basic civil rights of others. From race and gender to sexual orientation and gender identity, it is a dangerous road our country has traveled down before. Still, today we see efforts at every level of government to distort our country’s sacred promise of religious freedom and use it to codify laws that protect some Americans but not others.

As practicing Catholics in public service, we have watched these efforts with heavy hearts. As the first openly gay congressman from New York, one of us has felt them as a direct threat to his own family.

We believe religious liberty and equal protection are not mutually exclusive. In a nation built as a beacon for those facing religious persecution and state-sponsored discrimination, the American commitment to religious liberty was crafted, above all else, as a statement of tolerance. It is a promise to protect and accept the marginalized and the minority, the voiceless and the victimized

In order to keep that promise for every American, however, the First Amendment established a simple boundary: your rights extend so far as they don’t infringe on mine or cause me serious harm. My freedom of faith cannot be used to undermine yours.

A commitment to this basic balance has fueled a growing federal response to those attempting to justify – and codify – discrimination towards the LGBT community. Last year, the Supreme Court in Obergefell v. Hodges recognized same-sex marriage under federal law. The Equality Act would add sexual orientation and gender identity as protected classes under the Civil Rights Act. The Obama Administration’s new guidelines for public schools and health providers regarding transgender persons make it clear that there can be no exceptions to equal protection. Last month, the House of Representatives saw bipartisan support for the Maloney amendment, which would bar federal contractors from discriminating against LGBT Americans.

Still, a powerful obstacle remains. The Religious Freedom Restoration Act became federal law in 1993 with broad, bipartisan support. Crafted to protect religious minorities, it was a clear statement by the American people and their elected representatives that protection and recourse is needed when the law unintentionally infringes upon free exercise. Jewish children should be allowed to wear yarmulkes in public schools that otherwise prohibit headwear. Fire department restrictions on facial hair should contain exceptions for those of Muslim faith.

Over the past 23 years, however, RFRA has been contorted into a tool for employers to undermine basic workplace protections, organizations to stonewall child labor investigations, and health providers to deny needed care for victims of sexual abuse.

The Supreme Court’s 2014 ruling in Burwell v. Hobby Lobby Stores opened these floodgates even further, providing a path for corporations to cite faith in discriminating against employees.

Worse yet, where the Supreme Court led state and federal governments have followed. In Congress, over 170 Republican members have leant their name to FADA. In our states, more than 25 so-called “religious liberty” bills were introduced in 2015. These bills lay the groundwork for a pregnant worker to be fired because her employer doesn’t believe in premarital sex or for a transgender child to be refused health care because a provider doesn’t accept the child’s gender identity.

It is with these circumstances in mind that the Do No Harm Act was filed earlier this year in the House of Representatives, with Congressman Bobby Scott. This bill would preserve the original purpose of RFRA – to serve as a protective shield for religious minorities – and clarify that no one can claim religious exemption from laws that protect against discrimination, govern wages and collective bargaining, prohibit child labor and abuse, provide access to health care, regulate public accommodations, or provide social services through government contracts.

As men of faith, the ability to freely and fully exercise sincerely-held religious beliefs in this country is a liberty we cherish. Across the nation, religious principle inspires countless families, organizations and communities to champion economic justice, human dignity and common decency.

But there is a difference between exercising religious beliefs and imposing them on others. Our Constitution fiercely protects the former and expressly prohibits the latter.

The Do No Harm Act reestablishes that fundamental distinction and confirms what generations of civic history, constitutional law and American experience have proved true: if civil and legal rights exist only in the absence of a neighbor’s religious objection, then they are not rights but empty promises.

8 Ways Smart People Act Stupid

2016-07-08-1468006516-5391518-8WaysSmartPeopleActStupidHP.jpg

It’s good to be smart. On the surface, being smart looks like easy living. But there’s another side to the story.

Intelligent people have a reputation for making dumb mistakes, especially in situations that require common sense. The simplicity of these situations and the abundant intelligence of those who tend to muck them up can be downright comical.

“Common sense is not so common.” -Voltaire

Scientists are finally beginning to understand why this happens. Shane Frederick at MIT was among the first to conduct research that explained why rational thinking and intelligence don’t tend to go hand in hand.

In his studies, Frederick gave people simple problems to solve, like this one:

A bat and ball cost a dollar and ten cents. The bat costs a dollar more than the ball. How much does the ball cost?

Frederick found that some people have the tendency to confidently blurt out the wrong answer, stating that the ball costs ten cents. You, of course, knew that the correct answer is that the ball costs five cents, and you’re completely justified if you’re wondering if the, well, less-than-smart people were the ones blurting out the wrong answer.

Psychologists from James Madison University and the University of Toronto wondered the same thing. They gave similar tests of logic to hundreds of people and compared the accuracy of their answers to their levels of intelligence. The researchers found that smart people were more likely to blurt out the wrong answer because they actually make more mental mistakes when problem-solving.

Smart people are more prone to silly mistakes because of blind spots in how they use logic. These blind spots exist because smart people tend to be overconfident in their reasoning abilities. That is, they’re so used to being right and having quick answers that they don’t even realize when they’re blowing it by answering without thinking things through.

The dummies getting the bat-and-ball question wrong weren’t so dumb, either. When Frederick gave the question to students from Harvard, Princeton, and M.I.T., more than half of them got it wrong. Even students from some of the most prestigious universities in the world make stupid mistakes.

Perhaps the scariest thing about the errors that highly intelligent people make is how unaware they are of them. People of all levels of intelligence succumb to what’s called the “bias blind spot.” That is, we’re great at spotting other people’s mistakes and terrible at recognizing our own. The sillier the mistake, the harder it is for an intelligent person to accept that they’ve made it.

“I know that I am intelligent, because I know that I know nothing.”
-Socrates

While it might seem like we don’t spend our days solving logic problems like the bat-and-ball question, the brain functions involved in solving these problems are the same ones we use in everyday thinking. Hence, the tendency to do stupid things follows smart people into the workplace. Consider some of the most common ways in which smart people manage to shoot themselves in the foot.

1. Smart people are overconfident. A lifetime of praise and pats on the back leads smart people to develop an unflappable faith in their intelligence and abilities. When you rack up accomplishments while people stroke your ego, it’s easy to expect that things will always go your way. But this is a dangerous expectation. Smart people often fail to recognize when they need help, and when they do recognize it, they tend to believe that no one else is capable of providing it.

2. They push people too hard. Smart people develop overachieving personalities because things come so easily to them. They simply don’t understand how hard some people have to work to accomplish the same things, and because of that, they push people too hard. Smart people set the bar too high, and when people take too long or don’t get things quite right, they assume it’s due to a lack of effort. So they push even harder and miss the opportunity to help others achieve the goals they’re so anxious for them to reach.

3. They always need to be right. It’s hard for anyone to graciously accept the fact that they’re wrong. It’s even harder for smart people because they grow so used to being right all the time that it becomes a part of their identity. For smart people, being wrong can feel like a personal attack, and being right, a necessity.

4. They lack emotional intelligence.
While intelligence (IQ) and emotional intelligence (EQ) don’t occur together in any meaningful way (Smart people, on average, have just as much EQ as everyone else), when a smart person lacks EQ, it’s painfully obvious. These high-IQ, low-EQ individuals see the world as a meritocracy. Achievements are all that matter, and people and emotions just get in the way. Which is a shame because TalentSmart research with more than a million people shows that–even among the upper echelons of IQ–the top performers are those with the highest EQs, as measured by an emotional intelligence test.

5. They give up when they fail. Have you ever watched a sporting event and seen the stunned look on the face of an athlete whom everyone expected to win, but didn’t? Smart people can easily fall into the trap of seeing failure as the end of the world because frequent success creates expectations that make failure hard to tolerate. People who have to work hard for what they achieve have plenty of practice learning how to deal with failure. They learn to embrace it because they know that failure is just a stepping stone to success.

6. They fail to develop grit. When things come really easy to you, it’s easy to see hard work as a negative (a sign that you don’t have what it takes). When smart people can’t complete something without a tremendous amount of effort, they tend to feel frustrated and embarrassed. This leads them to make the false assumption that if they can’t do something easily, there’s something wrong with them. As a result, smart people tend to move on to something else that affirms their sense of worth before they’ve put in the time to develop the grit they need to succeed at the highest possible level.

7. They multitask. Smart people think really quickly, which can make them impatient. They like to get several things going at once so that there isn’t any downtime. They think so quickly that, when they multitask, it feels like it’s working and they’re getting more done, but Stanford research shows that this isn’t the case. Not only does multitasking make you less productive, but people who multitask often because they think they’re good at it are actually worse at multitasking than people who prefer to do one thing at a time.

8. They have a hard time accepting feedback. Smart people tend to undervalue the opinions of others, which means they have trouble believing that anyone is qualified to give them useful feedback. Not only does this tendency hinder their growth and performance, it can lead to toxic relationships, both personally and professionally.

Bringing It All Together

To some, this post will read like I’m trashing smart people, but I’m not. Some of life’s greatest gifts, including high intelligence, can also come with challenges. If you aren’t willing to take an honest look at the whole picture, you’re selling yourself short. And that isn’t smart.

How do you see smart people acting stupid? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.

It’s Up To Us Now

Unless you’re 88 years old, most of us have not lived in a world without Elie Wiesel. We had a champion who carried our pain, our guilt and our responsibility on his shoulders for generations. Now he’s gone. It’s hard to fathom. So I guess it’s up to us now. To fight for the disenfranchised. To speak truth to power and to never forget how cruel man can be to man. In memory of Elie it’s the least we can do. Rest in peace my friend. You brought us this far. We’ll take it from here.

9 Signs That You’re An Ambivert

2016-06-29-1467225627-2860078-9SignsThatYoureAnAmbivertHP.jpg

I’m sure you’ve been asked many times whether you’re an introvert or an extrovert. For some people, it’s an easy choice, but for most of us, it’s difficult to choose one way or the other.

It’s hard to choose because the introvert/extrovert dichotomy reflects a tired and outdated view of personality. Personality traits exist along a continuum, and the vast majority of us aren’t introverts or extroverts — we fall somewhere in the middle.

Personality consists of a stable set of preferences and tendencies through which we approach the world. Personality traits form at an early age and are fixed by early adulthood. Many important things about you change over the course of your lifetime, but your personality isn’t one of them.

“Always be yourself, express yourself, have faith in yourself, do not go out and look for a successful personality and duplicate it.”
–Bruce Lee

The continuum between introversion and extroversion captures one of the most important personality traits. It’s troubling that we’re encouraged to categorize ourselves one way or the other because there are critical strengths and weaknesses commonly associated with each type.

Adam Grant at Wharton set out to study this phenomenon, and his findings are fascinating. First, he found that two-thirds of people don’t strongly identify as introverts or extroverts. These people (aka, the vast majority of us) are called ambiverts, who have both introverted and extroverted tendencies. The direction ambiverts lean toward varies greatly, depending on the situation.

Think of introversion and extroversion as a spectrum, with ambiversion lying somewhere in the middle:

2016-06-29-1467225709-2646074-9SignsThatYoureAnAmbivertHP2.jpg

Ambiverts have a distinct advantage over true introverts and extroverts. Because their personality doesn’t lean too heavily in either direction, they have a much easier time adjusting their approach to people based on the situation. This enables them to connect more easily, and more deeply, with a wider variety of people.

Grant’s research also disproved the powerful and widely held notion that the best-performing salespeople are extroverts. He found that ambiverts’ greater social flexibility enabled them to outsell all other groups, moving 51 percent more product per hour than the average salesperson. Notice how sales increased as extroversion increased, peaking with those who were just moderately extroverted.

2016-06-29-1467225786-6624873-9SignsThatYoureAnAmbivertHP3.jpg

Grant explained the finding this way:

“Because they naturally engage in a flexible pattern of talking and listening, ambiverts are likely to express sufficient assertiveness and enthusiasm to persuade and close a sale, but are more inclined to listen to customers’ interests and less vulnerable to appearing too excited or overconfident.”

How Ambiversion Works in the Brain

How social you are is largely driven by dopamine, the brain’s feel-good hormone. We all have different levels of dopamine-fueled stimulation in the neocortex (the area of the brain that is responsible for higher mental functions such as language and conscious thought). Those who naturally have high levels of stimulation tend to be introverts — they try and avoid any extra social stimulation that might make them feel anxious or overwhelmed. Those with low levels of stimulation tend to be extroverts. Under-stimulation leaves extroverts feeling bored, so they seek social stimulation to feel good.

Most people’s levels of natural stimulation don’t reach great extremes, though it does fluctuate. Sometimes you may feel the need to seek out stimulation, while other times, you may avoid it.

Finding Out Whether You’re An Ambivert

It’s important to pin down where you fall in the introversion/extroversion scale. By increasing your awareness of your type, you can develop a better sense of your tendencies and play to your strengths.

If you think that you might be an ambivert, but aren’t certain, see how many of the following statements apply to you. If most of them apply, you’re most likely an ambivert.

  1. I can perform tasks alone or in a group. I don’t have much preference either way.
  2. Social settings don’t make me uncomfortable, but I tire of being around people too much.
  3. Being the center of attention is fun for me, but I don’t like it to last.
  4. Some people think I’m quiet, while others think I’m highly social.
  5. I don’t always need to be moving, but too much down time leaves me feeling bored.
  6. I can get lost in my own thoughts just as easily as I can lose myself in a conversation.
  7. Small talk doesn’t make me uncomfortable, but it does get boring.
  8. When it comes to trusting other people, sometimes I’m skeptical, and other times, I dive right in.
  9. If I spend too much time alone, I get bored, yet too much time around other people leaves me feeling drained.

The trick to being an ambivert is knowing when to force yourself to lean toward one side of the spectrum when it isn’t happening naturally. Ambiverts with low self-awareness struggle with this. For example, at a networking event, a self-aware ambivert will lean toward the extroverted side of the scale, even when it has been a long day and he or she has had enough of people. Mismatching your approach to the situation can be frustrating, ineffective, and demoralizing for ambiverts.

Bringing It All Together

TalentSmart has conducted research with over a million people and found that those in the upper echelon of performance at work also tend to be highly self-aware (90 percent of them, in fact). By gaining a better sense of where you fall on the introversion/extroversion scale, you can build insight into your tendencies and preferences, which increases your self-awareness and emotional intelligence. This will help you improve your performance.

So, are you an ambivert? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below, as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.

See How Fireworks Injuries Skyrocket On July 4th

By Natalie Bronshtein and Megan Thielking

The Fourth of July always brings a slew of patients with fireworks injuries into ERs across the country. But it’s not solely an Independence Day phenomenon. Federal researchers track data on those injuries year-round.

Children are much more likely than adults to get hurt — 12-year-olds sustain more fireworks injuries than any other age group.

“Presumably they’re getting their fireworks from their parents,” said Joseph Canner, a Johns Hopkins researcher who has studied fireworks injuries. “That’s very disconcerting.”

Four states allow residents to legally purchase fireworks at age 12: Arkansas, Mississippi, North Dakota, and Oklahoma.

Fireworks laws aren’t standardized nationally. In Massachusetts and New Jersey, it’s illegal to buy or sell fireworks at all. In Ohio, fireworks are available for purchase, but consumers have to sign a document stating they’ll take them out of the state within 48 hours.

The data isn’t detailed enough to determine how, exactly, those laws affect injury rates. “But there seems to be sort of a trend toward areas of the country where laws are more relaxed to have higher rates of injuries,” Canner said.

Age isn’t the only factor playing into fireworks injuries: Men are more likely to be hurt than women.

“Even if they’re 21 years old, if they don’t take responsibility for using the fireworks correctly, or if they’re under the influence and not using correctly, they can get hurt,” said Ralph Apel, spokesperson for the National Council on Fireworks Safety.

The most common type of injury: thermal burns. Sparklers, while easy for kids to use and play with, can be particularly dangerous.

“Sparklers are a pretty simple device, but they burn hot,” said Apel.

The injuries span a wide range — ranging from a 2-year-old boy who sustained a burn to his eye after his brother accidentally hit him with a sparkler to a 23-year-old who had a bottle rocket explode in his hands and needed a finger amputated.

Some of the data points are indirect injuries; one patient suffered bites after fireworks spooked a nearby dog.

Apel said he urges anyone using fireworks to read labels carefully so “they know what the firework is gonna do before they start.”

Experts also recommend that people lighting fireworks that shoot out or up immediately step away after lighting them. Depending on how long the fuse is, you have between three and 12 seconds to make it a safe distance away, Apel said.

“If you bend down on your haunches, light a fuse, get up, and walk away,” Apel noted, “in three seconds you can be quite a ways away.”

Jerry Brown’s Concerns Reflect Hillary Clinton’s Vulnerability

Governor Jerry Brown has signed another California budget essentially along the lines he proposed, once again thwarting the designs of some legislative Democrats for expansive new and renewed programs. Not that Brown hasn’t had some expansive programs of his own, especially in education, health care, energy and the environment, and new infrastructure for a sustainable new economy.

“This solid budget makes responsible investments in California and sets aside billions of dollars to prepare for the next recession,” Brown declared in a signing statement.

That last is the tell, the reminder of why Brown has been loathe to restore a number of social welfare programs which he and predecessor Arnold Schwarzenegger cut back in the period in which the now four-term governor inherited a $ 27 billion state budget deficit. Why not? Because they’re the sorts of programs that grow and grow. And Brown is more convinced than ever that the next economic downturn is already on its way.

This, despite the fact that California’s economy during Brown’s governorship has grown into in the world, trailing only those of China, the US as a whole, India, Japan, and Germany.

Russia? Just behind California. Britain? Back in 11th place, even before the exit from the European Union which continues to roil the world economic landscape (and has just turned into a real-life ‘House of Cards’ in both the Conservative and Labour Parties).

Brown, who has continually, in the view of many analysts, low-balled California revenue forecasts, even doubled his new state budget rainy day fund. Though of course any big downturn will probably require significant future budget cuts. That’s the only actual “spending limit,” as I’ve noted with regard to other governors, which works in a democratic society, and is well within the broad constitutional powers of the California governorship.

Brown’s longstanding and growing concern about an economic downturn reflects one of the key eventualities that could lead to the defeat of the Democrat he ended up successfully backing earlier this month in the California primary, former Secretary of State of Hillary Clinton.

Despite a month of woe, the execrable de facto Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump only trails Clinton by, on average, a mid-single digit margin.

The continued danger of a Trump presidency, which if anything has increased again in the wake of Brexit, added a sense of urgency to Brown’s hosting of the first ever Clean Energy Ministerial held in the US. Brown hosted what has become an annual summit of major world energy ministers in his home town San Francisco a few days before the California primary.

The two-time runner-up for the Democratic presidential nomination also created a second global organization on renewable energy and climate change, the Subnational Clean Energy Ministerial, representing subnational governments in key energy-producing nations. office/2016/06/02/fact-sheet-us-hosts-worlds-energy-ministers-scale-clean-energy-and-drive

Trump is a notorious climate change denier who has vowed to push an energy strategy which would take America back — though hardly in the way he meant it last week when he appropriated Brown’s 1992 presidential campaign slogan — at least half a century, relying on coal and other fossil fuels to the extent that the cooking of the planet would not only not be reversed, it would be accelerated.

Clinton, in sharp contrast, has committed to major steps forward along the renewable energy path that California is blazing into the future.

Brown also just wrote a powerful article in the New York Review of Books, discussing former Defense Secretary William Perry’s new book, ‘My Journey At the Nuclear Brink.’

In it, Brown says that Perry, a defense technology insider for more than half a century, “As much as anyone, is aware of the ways, secret and public, that technical innovation, private profit and tax dollars, civilian gadgetry and weapons of mass destruction, satellite technology, computers, and ever-expanding surveillance are interconnected. But he now uses this dark knowledge in an effort to reverse the deadly arms race in which he had such a pivotal role.”

As it happens, Clinton takes a more conventional view, and, among other things, has long backed the NATO expansionism which has alarmed Russia since the ’90s and may drive a new nuclear arms race as Brown and Perry point out. I’ll have more on this going forward.

Trump, however, has views on nuclear weapons which are frankly terrifying.

He blithely recommends an increase in nuclear proliferation and has spoken of using nuclear weapons as though they are just another military option, holding out the prospect of nuking the terrorists of Isis. In the American system, the president has quite stunning and immediate direct power over the nuclear button.

If Hillary Clinton is elected, there’s room for debate and improvement on nuclear weapons along the lines advocated by Perry, Brown, and others.

But if Trump is elected, there can be nothing but opposition to a profoundly dangerous mindset and temperament. And perhaps prayerful hopes for the best.

In which case Brown’s Jesuit background might come in handy.

Why Having Dinner With An Ex Is A Bad Idea (Except In Fiction)

Anyone who writes fiction will tell you: Misunderstandings are storytelling gold. Shakespeare used them for both comic and tragic effect. So did Mark Twain, Charles Dickens, and J.K. Rowling. I often build an entire plot around a misunderstanding I establish in the first few pages of a novel.

In real life, misunderstandings are less entertaining. They can lead to confusion, anger, and tears. This is never more true than in romantic relationships, especially a new relationship that begins in midlife. What works in a romantic comedy–the cute meet at the beginning followed by the stormy breakup in the middle that leads to the happily ever after–often falls flat in real life when the first misunderstanding arises.

Because here’s the thing about modern relationships: In many cases, there are former boyfriends, girlfriends, and even ex-spouses who are not Disney villains. Some are pretty darn nice. And what about all those interesting people you met during the months, or years, of online dating?

What do we do with the people from our past to avoid misunderstandings in our current relationships?

Most of us would probably agree that a candlelight dinner with an ex is a bad idea. But what about a casual dinner or lunch? Researchers at Cornell University discovered that sharing a meal with an ex-partner elicits more sexual jealousy from a current significant partner, male or female, than does an interaction that does not involve eating.

“Eating seems to be viewed as more intimate than just talking or drinking coffee with another person,” says Dr. Kevin Kniffin, a behavioral scientist and co-author of the Cornell study.

Okay, so what about coffee? What about Irish coffee? What about the Irish guy you dated casually and platonically over coffee? Do you maintain contact with him in person? By phone? Online? Not at all? How do we balance our desire to be kind to the people from our past with our greater desire to be wonderful partners in our current relationships?

“Attachment theory offers a really good framework for approaching this,” says Dr. Heike Winterheld, a social psychologist at Washington University who studies close relationships. “It’s important to understand that many people have attachment insecurity because their emotional needs weren’t reliably or completely met by early caregivers. In a new relationship, you bring your old attachment history with you.”

According to Dr. Winterheld, attachment insecurity generally takes two forms. Adults who had inconsistent care as children may feel anxious and overreact when they feel insecure in a relationship. Other people who were forced to be overly self-reliant as children may avoid or deny their feelings.

So when it comes to lunch dates with exes, it’s often: “What?! You’re having lunch together? Are we breaking up?” Or, “Go ahead. Have lunch. Have dinner. Have fun, dear.”

There is a healthy middle ground, says Dr. Winterheld. “Learning to calmly and openly express your concerns in a non-accusatory way is possible. Pay attention to your attachment pattern and learn the attachment needs and expectations of your partner.”

As always, communication is the key. Here are a few questions to get the conversation started:

  • How will we respond if a former partner asks us to pet sit or bring in the mail during vacation?
  • What if my ex is scheduled for a minor procedure in the hospital and wants me to be there to lend moral support?
  • Let’s say your ex has always relied on you to help with taxes, holiday shopping, or financial advice. Would you continue to help? Or is it better to say, “I’m not the right person for that job anymore.”
  • Will we continue to provide former partners with free IT support? Proofreading services? Access to our Netflix account?
  • What if someone you met online and dated briefly and platonically wants to have lunch or dinner, “just to catch up”?
  • Will we respond to every email and text from everyone we’ve ever dated? Or should we limit communication and even ignore some messages to avoid sending mixed signals about our availability?

There are no right or wrong answers here. In the end, it’s a question of what we can do–and not do–to make our current partner feel loved and secure.

“Attachment insecurity is common,” says Dr. Winterheld. “I’ve never met a person who didn’t relate to one attachment disorder or the other. Therapy can help, but if it’s a mild attachment disorder, just learning about it can sometimes do the trick.”

You might also want to make a list of what’s exclusively yours as a couple. Cordon off those special things with a velvet rope to protect them and the relationship. You might also consider keeping your list private. After all, one of the nicest things about being in a relationship is the fact that some things are reserved for two, just like the best table in a romantic restaurant.

Trump Amps Up His Call For Torture: ‘We’re Going To Have To Do Things That Are Unthinkable’

Presumptive Republican presidential nominee and ardent waterboarding supporter Donald Trump wants America to be much tougher on suspected terrorists. So tough, in fact, that we must to do “the unthinkable” when it comes to prisoner interrogation, he said Thursday.

Trump, during an interview with New Hampshire’s NH1, was asked about his calls to reinstate waterboarding following Tuesday’s attack on Istanbul’s Ataturk Airport that killed at least 44 people. Trump has enthusiastically endorsed tactics now widely regarded as torture, and has discounted recent criticism from Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), who said the interrogation technique “was not the American way.

“Well it’s not the American way to have heads chopped off and have people drowning in steel changes,” Trump said, presumably referring to videos released by the Islamic State that show such execution methods. “And so we can have a our disagreements, but we’re going to have to get much tougher as a country. We’re going to have to be a lot shaper and we’re going to have to do things that are unthinkable almost.

“Unthinkable, when you look at what’s happening to us, when you look at what’s going on in this country and throughout the world and we don’t want, you know they’re allowed to cut off heads and they’re allowed to chop off heads and we can’t waterboard. So people can have disagreements, but I feel we have to get much, much, stronger, tougher and smarter.”

Hours after the Istanbul attack, Trump called for the need to fight “fire with fire” in the battle against terrorism. On waterboarding, he said, “I like it a lot. I don’t think it’s tough enough.”

Terrorists “probably think we’re weak, we’re stupid, we don’t know what we’re doing, we have no leadership,” he told a crowd in Ohio.

A day later, McCain a former prisoner of war — said such a position is “not the United States of America. It’s not what we are all about. It’s not what we are.”

The International Red Cross classified waterboarding as torture in 2014 and said the practice violates the Geneva Conventions.

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.
